Dank Morass and Monster Mash (in conjunction with Civil Society & 4ZzZ 102.1FM) are proud
to present the debut Brisbane show for Kevin Martin's epic dubstep project The Bug. The
Bug currently stands in the centre of the UK dubstep scene, but his history as an artist
plumbing the depths of sinister, bass heavy music stems back more than two decades.
Martin's projects have shaped the sound of the UK underground and in his latest
incarnation he has produced one of the quintessential albums of the burgeoning dubstep
genre, London Zoo (Ninja Tune, 2008).
The sound of The Bug is monstrous. Martin's epic production distils the elements of
dancehall, noise, grime and hip-hop and combines them to produce a sonic explosion of
devastating proportions. He cuts up pounding bass, driving rhythms and dancehall beats
with stunning vocals from the likes of Tippa Irie, Rick Ranking, Flowdan and the
irrepressible Warrior Queen, who joins The Bug on stage as the vocalist for this tour.
This night of bass mayhem will commence early, from 4pm, allowing Brisbane to round off
its Australia Day long weekend with one of the most overwhelming sonic assaults in the
world today - even if you have to work on the Tuesday! Be advised that the Dank Morass &
Monster Mash crews have organized additional sound and lighting rigs for this one-off,
epic performance. dB levels will be pushed to the limit so ear plugs (and a spare pair of
shorts) are highly recommended.
Bio:
The Bug AKA Kevin Martin's long resume of projects include Techno Animal, Ice and God
(all with Justin Broadrick of Napalm Death and Godflesh), Curse of the Golden Vampire
(with Broadrick and Atari Teenage Riot's Alec Empire) and many more. Other collaborators
in his esteemed career include John Zorn, El-P, Blixa Bargeld and Antipop Consortium.
Amidst a synthesis of diverse genres, The Bug places a 21st-century twist on reggae's
Babylonian rhetoric, embedding biting commentary on society in the midst of the pulsating
basslines. Tracks from London Zoo are certified dancefloor killers, at the same time being
compared to the "rage-filled exuberance of such classic state-of-the-world addresses as
Specials, Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and Black Flag's Damaged" (The Observer)
Originally Hailing from Jamaica, Warrior Queen will join The Bug on stage as his MC for
the show. She has an extensive body of work in dancehall, garage, dubstep and beyond,
including collaborations with Skream and DJ Zinc. She has voiced the iconic Bug single
"Poison Dart" as well as the stunning album track "Insane". The Bug and Warrior Queen are
currently completing a series of US dates with Nine Inch Nails.
