Hi folks

I am a professional dj from Glasgow, Scotland, and am intending to visit Australia
(Possibly for 1 year) in Oct 08 and was wondering what the dj situation is like in
Sydney/Melbourne. In particular I was wondering if it is difficult to gain a new gig in
the city as a an outsider, I was also wondering what the pay is like for dj's in
Australia? Also, what is the house/music scene like in Sydney and Melbourne, are there
plenty of bars and clubs to gain work in.

Currently I dj four nights a week in Glasgow and have been doing this for 4 years
professionally. I playt house/funky house/electro/electro house/deep house/us garage.

Any replies are greatly appreciated.

Greg

Well, in Sydney you won't be getting 4 nights a week for a start. 90% of the work is
Friday and Saturday night, and as for pay, it depoends who you work for. The average pay
for a 4 hour set though is $65 an hour, but some people pay more, and some scoundrels
think $45 an hour is acceptable.. and the scary thing is people actually work for
them!

If you really want a decent amount of work in Sydney, being flexible with your music
style is a definite advantage. All the young DJ's want to be cool, and play funky house,
electro etc, so if thats all you play, you are competeing with an awful lot of people for
a limited number of gig's. If you are happy to play commercial, and play something in
addition to house, you have a greater chance of getting work. :)
