I found a few books that were very helpful while touring in thailand. One was called Thai for Lovers. And the other was a Thai-English dictionary from Paiboon Publishing ( I think their website is www.paiboonpublishing.com ). Both books were very handy to have with me and had a phonetic guide so i was able to communicate and get around quite easily.
