BOSTON BURLESQUE BASH RETURNS
Dancers and Fans Flock to Boston for Prizes, Learning, and Friendship
CAMBRIDGE, MA – The second annual Great Boston Burlesque Exposition will be held at the
Hyatt Regency Hotel in Cambridge from March 21-23, 2008. This three-night, two-day event
brings together performers, devotees, and purveyors of products related to the still
vibrant art form known as Burlesque. Among the many events taking place at the
exposition are performances by both new and veteran entertainers, and classes on
Burlesque essentials including fan dancing, bump and grind – even tassel twirling.
“For decades Boston was one of the towns for Burlesque entertainment,” said Burlesque
Expo organizer, who only goes by ‘Scratch’. “That surprises many people, but that
is why this exposition is being held here in the Hub, because Boston is still a center
for those who practice the Burlesque arts. And so, at this exposition and performance
festival, we hope to bring together the generations for a celebration of one of America
’s original performing arts.”
The event includes:
Three nightly burlesque shows
Friday, March 21 The Rhinestone Revue , a star-studded
showcase, featuring the best in burlesque of both yesterday and today
Saturday, March 22 The Main Event , performers from all over
North America compete for prizes under the watchful eye of burlesque dancer and
America’s Next Top Model contestant Sarah Hartshorne.
The Dead Doll Dancers will be throwing their bras down for the battle! Winners of The
Main Event receive prize packages and The Howard Awards, The name honors the famous Old
Howard Theater , Boston 's home of Burlesque for almost 100 years. Judges include winners
from last year’s competition, and four Burlesque Legends.
Sunday, March 23: The Newcomers’ Showcase/The Sideshowball
The Newcomers’ Showcase highlights new performers in the world of
burlesque; The Sideshow Ball features all the acts that traditionally accompanied
burlesque (sword-swallowers, jugglers, tumblers, etc.)
The Vintage Fashion Fair with vendors from all over the world selling costumes, music,
props, shows, memorabilia, cosmetics, and much more!
Over 30 classes on everything from “Fan Dancing” to “Negotiating a Contract”
A Burlesque Costume Exhibit – the finest examples of the
costume maker’s art are on display, including costumes from Dita Von Teese, Kitten
Natividad, and many more.
Another exciting aspect of the gathering is the list of classes. ‘Betty Blaize’, who
is organizing the classes, said “We expect to have as many as 50 during the
conference”. Miss Blaize, who performs with The Boston Babydolls, said that the
classes are being geared towards every level of student, from novice to professional.
Anticipating the possibility of inclement weather, every event is under one roof. All
classes, performances, the tradeshow, and the film center are all located on the banks of
the Charles River at The Hyatt Regency Hotel, 575 Memorial Drive , Cambridge MA .
Discounted parking is available at the hotel’s garage.
