Go and download winMX. A lot of Audiogalaxy users have moved there, and it's good... not
as good as Ausiogalaxy, but give it time.

and give it 10 minutes before the riaa starts on them next and they get sued for 80
million times what they are worth. digital copyright management... its the way of the
future..

winMX is a different case to Audiogalaxy and Napster.

It doesn't use central servers (which is why it's not as fast for searches)... I don't
think.

Its not going to matter. Kazaa was a proper p2p network that was not centralized like
napster/ag. They're still getting done by the RIAA.

The riaa are doin the rounds, and they WILL knock each of these sharing apps as they go.

The only benefit from a real p2p app is that even if the business that initiates the
software and the client base gets done by the riaa and dies, the software lives on. But
be warned, dont think for a second you aren't being watched. They ahve already started
putting in fake apps/mp3s into the larger p2p networks to lean out the "theft" rate.

Individuals who arent heavy abusers wont be targets, badnwidth hogs and people whom horde
massive amounts of music and software apps will be the next targets. And it has already
begun, individuals are being raided and done over this. Maybe not here in AUS yet to the
scale some other countries are seeing, but like I said, thats the next step.

With digital rights management (Palladium - M$/Intel) developing hardware and software to
control digital media we're all in for using a controlled piece of equipment. M$ is
already using their software updates (you know those ""Critical Updates"") to start
sneaking in Palladium based prinicpals into their apps such as Media Player (digital
copyright control). Next gen hardware will have built in digital Rights management. And
its goin to be alot more than just CPUID.

Privacy groups i believe will hold this out for a while, because indeed it is a massive
invasion of our privacy. Taking stats on our usage, what we do, what we look at. But
privacy groups just dont have the massively deep pockets like Intel/M$/Riaa and the end
consumer will be the loser. Their idea is to slowly implement these procedures so that
most people wont notice what they can adn cant use is incrementally being limited... All
to stop massive end user backlash. I mean when was the last time it didnt take 30 mins to
plough through a EULA? Do you people even read your EULA's? Do you have any idea what
scope you are giving these business by agree'ing?

 ow my fingers.....

anyone care to discuss further? This issue has been of quite a bit of interest to me
lately and ive been trying to keep an eye on what i can.. and the outlook as i see it
aint too pretty. At the same time, the aim also is to get music/artists etc to not be
ripped off. Its just a shame that the recording companies are going to these lenghts to
maintain their own profits. many arists just dont see shit all compared to the record
companies. And the record companies just arent prepared to accept the day of muti-million
dollar Cd sales are well on the way out. How will these ceo's keep their bazillion dollar
sallaries?

NOTHING they do can prevent this sort of activity. It is a hopeless cause for them. They
might as well give up as they will end up having NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER.

As far as EULAs go... do tell... what are "you people" giving away?

Private FTP has been around faaaaaaaaaaaaaar longer than any of these p2p apps and the
rest of it.. and still is the most convenient and functional way of distributing
unreleased / apps etc etc. and without a doubt far ahrder to track etc.

Personally, ive still been using FTP / irc as my source for many years and still continue
to do so. Most governtment agencies cant do anything about it (especially here in au) .
But you're absolutely fooling yourself that they dont know its goin on. As an end
"leecher" user your not really a target. There's squat all they can do about it. But
times are a changing and people who do run private servers on gargantuan sized links are
the targets, especially those affiliated with 'groups' whose purpose is to distribute the
goods.

God if only we here in au could get Tx sized links and the sort to our home residences..
#### metered bandwidth. Its a crock of shit. /me spit on telstra etc....

"Private FTP has been around faaaaaaaaaaaaaar longer than any of these"
Yeah yeah I know... you are talking to a software engineer, so you don't have to be
trying to edumacte me. :)

"Personally, ive still been using FTP / irc as my source"
It's the ONLY source that I use.

"As an end "leecher" user your not really a target."
Exactly, and that's why I'm not concerned (and I'm not fooling myself about anything)

"if only we here in au could get Tx sized links"
Is 10Mb alright?
That's what I'm on here at work... it's pretty snappy for downloading, but I wouldn't
want to serve to a bunch of people leeching off me.

"/me spit on telstra etc...."
/me spits on Telstra next to Ralph's spit

Funny shit - you think im insulted in the slightest by mezlas comments? Gesus H christ...
idijt... How about lets hear your opinion, or is mindless shite all you are capable of?

Mezla - 10mb ish yeh, varied on the scale of T1-3. Regardless, most business' with a link
are like yours at work are being metered. Running servers on work machines (setting them
up for mainly outgoing data fer the leechers) was entirely common untill Telstra(majority
backbone) adjusted their data policy (round '98 from memory) from not only charging fer
incoming (which no one was impressed about when implemented in the first place), but
outgoing scaled against the incoming amount. Over X threshold they started charging for
each mb from there. This was a telstra tactic when business' like the one i had been
working for (where once upon a time i had a ftp setup) swapped to using unmetered Sat
links for incoming and using their existing serial connection for outgoing (typically
quite a proportion less than incoming). Obvious mute point here, it was being metered
both ways and a massive amount of Au wide servers (many were like where you work, just a
sys admin setting up a ftp server on a not often used box) got the big can. Also IT firms
are faaaar more strict on use of their servers nowadays (ie letting sys ads run erroneous
servers for their own use from ircd to ftp)...

so again.. most of the high traffic servers are not in country (yay lag)... just cant be
done, especially without being noticed. *dreams of unmetered data* -yes.. Geek++

anyhow... back to the grind.

Word. There was nothing insulting in there... I was just bringing you up to speed a
little on my level of clue... and you seemed to know that. Nice.

Yeah, I can't serve from here... but if I could... the online dance music community would
love me.

Want Sasha's new album anyone? Want Underworld's new album anyone?
Want this unreleased Grace Jones vs Tricky remixed by Danny Tenaglia anyone?
*chuckle*

We need somethun like a local wireless network or somethun.. so we get our distro on! I
came close to having a local distro ftp setup on a absolutely massive network, but it all
fell apart last week. Near cried. I was sooo close!!

Ill just chime on in to this convo... wont deliverate, just say that as far as all p2p
gear on the net goes... there is nothing, nothing that will ever stop the free flow of
info on the net except the general boredness of the population...
I can still today get everything i want for free on the net.
But i was glad when napster went down, because it put an end to my wishlist that had
ballooned out to 300 albums at that stage. As far as im concerned, shutting down
napster/audiogalaxy/whatever isnt hurting anyone except those who benifit from me buying
records.
But its still pretty pointless becasue i can still find it all for free on the net, i
just have to look elsewhere...
Its beautiful - on a question of morals, who is more evil - mettalica or phillip
ruddock??
