Q-------When did you first realise that "TEKNO" was thee music for you?
A-------I first encountered "TEKNO" music in thee late 1980’s when I first
heard some ov thee music that "Psychic T.V" were making.
I still honestly believe that they were thee true roots ov
"Acid House". Thee style instantly grabbed me & filled my head
& heart with infinite ideas & inspiration! Thee possibilities
seemed limitless & exciting!
I’ve always had a passion for music & at last I felt that I had
found a style ov music that would never grow stale. I had no
idea that an entire subculture would eventually build up & thrive
off a musical style that was entirely based on repetition.
Tekno enables you to dance literally into other dimensions & at
thee same time, brings a great sense ov unity & one common purpose
to all ov those on thee dancefloor.
Q-------How did you first begin D.Jaying & was it easy to break into thee
Tekno underground as a new D.J, & did anyone try to help you get
Started (particularly any already recognised D.Jays from thee local
Sydney scene?)?
A-------In thee early 1990’s, a crew ov free thinking, anarchistic youths known
as "JELLYHEADZ", put a spark to thee idea ov Sydney starting an
"autonomous party collective" for thee community, & eventually
thee infamous "VIBE TRIBE" was born. Vibe Tribe aimed at holding
regular, non-profit, non-exclusive events (Tekno Parties) in an
attempt to bring thee community closer together.
Thee parties were usually held in autonomous community spaces like thee
infamous "Sydney Park" & there would be buckets circulated during
thee night for thee purpose ov donations so that costs ov P.A hire
& generator fuel could be covered. No D.Jays or performers were paid
for their input so they all did it for thee same reason.

After attending a few ov thee first Vibe Tribe events, I became involved
directly with thee collective & began to help bring these unforgettable
events to life.
I first D.Jayed at a party due to thee fact that no D.Jays were being paid,
often members ov thee collective itself would have to supply music also.
I found myself, at a gig, behind thee decks, with no idea on how to use
thee mixer! About 200-250 people were already dancing to thee
previous D.Jays sets finale, so, armed just with my limited collection
ov vinyl, I closed my eyes, placed a record onto thee unused turntable,
cued it up, & hoped for thee best!! I think that I just switched thee
playing deck off & let it just slow down! Just before it stopped
entirely, I hit start on my records host & have never turned back since!
It just came so naturally to me.
Q-------Why do you think that Tekno suits you so well?
A-------I don’t!
I think that only 2-3% ov all tekno that is produced
is ov any reasonable quality,
but when you find that 2-3%,
It suits me just fine!!
Q-------Does thee crowd have any influence over what you play & how do
you know what they want to hear?
A-------Ov Course!!
As a D.Jay, you, I guess, ride thee crowd, sort ov like a normal
Jockey would ride a horse, except, you don’t have to be a midget,
or dream ov being in thee "Melbourne Cup"!!
You must watch thee dance floor closely throughout your entire set.
If you notice thee slightest change ov "vibe", you must act quickly
to ensure that thee dancefloor doesn’t disperse!!
It is important to try to start your set at one point, & gradually,
(but not to gradually)
build up thee tempo & thee intensity ov thee sounds so that thee
crowd feel like you have taken them somewhere new!! If you see one
uninterested face, then change thee mood ov thee music before it
catches on!!
Q-------How long have you been directly involved with thee tekno subculture,
& during this time, have you noticed any changes in your particular
style? If so, then why?
A-------I’ve been D.Jaying for 6.5 years, but have been actively partying hard for
a good 9.5 years.
Sure, my style has changed, but, so has thee face ov music itself! Every
last day, new music is released, & some ov it is ground breaking.
In thee 9.5 years, tekno has also mutated into an incredibly particular
science in sounds! D.Jays no longer just play records so much as they
"manipulate soundscapes" & create "exciting new mixtures" ov sounds that
can often, never be repeated!!!
Q-------Picture this scenario;
"You are playing an excellent set at an awesome party, &
just as you are bringing thee dancefloor to a peak, thee
police enter & order you to kill thee sound system!!"
What do you do??
A-------Simple;
inform thee police that:
-You are not in charge ov thee event!!!
-They would have to find thee person in charge ov thee
event before thee music could be shut off!!
-You don’t know how to turn off thee P.A.
-They had better not touch anything, as it is incredibly
easy to blow up a system & they do not have thee
authority to risk doing that!!!
Thee main rule whilst dealing with thee police is that you must never, &
I mean never give them your correct I.D particulars, as if you did, your
name would eternally flash up on their computer screens in relation to
illegal underground tekno "RAVE" parties, which would make you thee
perfect scapegoat for any future investigations in relation to these
"ILLEGAL GATHERINGS"!!!
Q-------It is obvious that you have your own unique style when it comes to
D.Jaying, over thee past 6-7 years, what have been some ov
your biggest influences & where do your moral roots stand??
A-------Many ov my major influences come from a whole bucketload ov obscure
bands & artists that span thee last 35 years ov musical history!!
They include:
Throbbing Gristle,
Frank Zappa,
Can,
Psychic T.V,
Coil,
Nurse With Wound,
Scraping FOETUS Off Thee Wheel,
Thee Hafler Trio,
Butthole Surfers,
Einsturzende Neubauten,
,& an endless amount ov others!!
Whereas, morally, my roots are mixed between, D.I.Y culture, Earth
conscious, Vegetarian, Anarchist beliefs, & my more recently
discovered devotion to thee way ov thee "TAO" & thee natural
flow ov vital energies involved with Taoism & it’s way ov life!!
Q-------Has your particular style ov sounds lead to you being given opportunities
to travel on a national or global scale? If so,what have been
some ov thee highlights?
A-------Sure they have!!!
Unfortunately, I’m yet to be flown over seas to share my sounds
with thee rest ov thee globe, but I have been flown all over this
country many times with destinations such as:
-Cairns
-Brisbane
-Melbourne
-Adelaide
-Canberra
-Byron Bay
-Central Australia
& everywhere in between!!!
Q-------Aside from D.Jaying, have you been active in thee area ov tekno
Production(ie: do you make your own "original" tekno music)
& if so, do you also D.Jay this whilst you are playing at parties?
A-------Definitely!!
When I’m making my own original tekno, I go under thee name:
"SECRET SQUIRREL"
I’ve made at least 40-50 entire tracks worth ov my own "home grown"
beats over thee last 5.5 years!! Only a couple ov them have been
released at this point, but thee future is in my sights & I intend
to start releasing an abundance ov my music in all possible formats!
