Originator of the major-label multi-genre mix album, influential DJ ANDY SMITH has announced his 2008 North American Tour. The tour is being presented by FILTER Magazine for the second consecutive year. "I 'm looking forward to getting back to the US to remind people what I 'm all about, " states Smith about his return here. "Lets have some fun! '
Smith's mixed bag of hip-hop, funk, reggae, soul and even are the typical contents of his DJ set, to be highlighted on the tour. Andy Smith originally made his name back in the 1990s with seminal trip-hop outfit Portishead. He provided sample material for their two first albums and went on to serve as their world tour DJ, reflecting their respect for both the art of digging for breaks and hip-hop scratch DJing. This appreciation of different genres made Andy the ideal candidate to provide sample material for Portishead. By incorporating hip-hop elements, Smith helped form the basis of their unique sound.
In 1998, when his mix CD The Document hit the streets, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut's Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more. The Document and its follow-ups Document II and Document III filled the void and in total have sold an excess of 130, 000 copies. The Document mix CD series reflects Smith's well-honed DJ style of playing good music whatever the genre from his mixed carryall of vinyl treasures. The series has proved so popular that Trojan Records asked Andy to breathe new life into their back catalog by releasing a reggae spin-off called The Trojan Document in 2006. Record Kicks released Andy's latest compilation Lets Boogaloo Volume 4 earlier this year.
Smith continues to regularly appear in clubs across the world, with residencies in London, Dublin and Switzerland; he has a strong cult following which has lead to him playing in places as far flung as Australia, South America and Japan. He has also has established himself as an underground producer of some of the most irresistible hip-hop breaks-based music around, working with Scott Hendy (Boca 45) under the name Dynamo Productions. Their album Analogue, which received five-out-of-five rating in Mojo magazine, featured San Diego-based MC Profile from the much-respected Sound Providers crew.
Andy has also produced the single Sounds Start Rockin, as featured on Kiss FM's Joe Ransom show. This is taken from Andys new mix CD 'DJ Andy Smith's Freestyle mix ' . They are both out now on Freestyle Records.
