Over the past decade Earthdance, the global festival for peace, has become renowned around the world as a celebration of cultural diversity, music and the arts. Since launching in Sydney in 2004 the popularity of Earthdance has increased rapidly, with a turnout of 40,000 people making last year the biggest Sydney Earthdance yet. This year Earthdance falls on Saturday 13 September, where the entire city is invited to enjoy the broad array of festivities - spanning music and drama to interactive workshops and markets and much more - at the new location of Prince Alfred Park.
The Earthdance festival takes place simultaneously in over 200 locations in 50 countries around the world in support of global peace and humanitarian aims. Earthdance Sydney maintains a long tradition of mixing genres and blurring boundaries across both local and global spheres. To ensure the standard of the festival is maintained and we can continue to present art and culture of the highest calibre we need the public to support the official launch of Earthdance 2008, with all funds raised from the night put towards the upcoming festival and ensuring Earthdance 2008 is the best yet.

2008 Music Highlights

Magik Johnson
MagikMagik Johnson is one of the foremost artists on Darren Emerson’s Underwater Records label, and is also a label manager in his own right, overseeing Shaboom Records, home to DJ Sneak among others. Johnson’s sound melds an array of tech house influences, and he has remixed the likes of The Crookers, Ian Pooley, Crazy Penis, DJ Sneak and The Human League. He has been a resident at such clubs as Space Ibiza in the past year and has just released his second artist album, You Are Sound, on Underwater, with leadoff single ‘East West Connection’ already a favourite among leading club DJs.

Shades of Gray
Nick & SchwaShades of Gray are the fast-rising underground production duo of Michal Ruzicka, aka DJ Schwa, and Nick West. Both are instrumental in coordinating and releasing on the local imprint Beef Records, which has appeared regularly in Beatport charts and featured releases from the likes of Deepchild of late. Shades of Gray productions have drawn attention and support from DJs/producers such as Hernan Cattaneo (Renaissance), D-Nox and Guy J. Shades of Gray will unleash their much-anticipated live show at Earthdance this year.

RifRaf
RifRafCo-founder of Sydney event company Deep As Funk, Rafael Gimelstein, aka DJ RifRaf, merges futuristic electronic-funk with minimal, electro, tech-house and breakbeat influences. Rif Raf has toured across Europe and the rest of the world, spinning at such internationally renowned venues as Indian superclub Elevate, Zenzi Bar in Bombay, Mecca in Prague and the Techno Valentino Festival in Lithuania. He currently holds residencies at The Bunker, the Sandringham Hotel and Lady Lux in Sydney. Rif Raf has headlined the Earthdance Festival mainstage since 2000, both at Sydney Park and Melbourne's Federation Square.

Marcotix
MarcotixMarco Mazzucco, aka Marcotix, is the co-founder of the Sydney based event company Deep As Funk. Renowned for his ability to bring home a night and up the tempo even following some of the biggest internationals in the techno scene – check the likes of Phil Kieran and Gui Boratto in ’08 - Marcotix’s diverse appeal is often overlooked. Over the past few years he has headlined the mainstage at Sydney’s Earthdance Festival and the 2SER Radio Stage at Sydney’s Newtown festival while touring the summer festival circuit with gigs at Playground Weekender, Surry Hills Festival, Mardi Gras, Freakreation, Earthcore and the Rainbow Serpent Festival.

Peret Mako
Mr. MakoPeret Mako’s long awaited debut album, The Devil’s In The Detail was released earlier this year on Future Classic to mass critical and public acclaim. Having produced for Alphatown Collective and Little Beasties, Peret has always been renowned amongst Sydney’s music cognoscenti, but his recent album has opened his serene electronic soundscapes up to a much broader public. Some of the biggest names on the international dance scene, such as Charles Webster and Swag, have remixed tracks from the album. From a background in hip hop to a love of techno, Peret’s sets are diverse and refined and he is a perfect candidate to open the Electric Earth stage at this year’s Earthdance. When asked about Earthdance, Peret had this to say; ““Earthdance is distinct because of the ideas and feeling behind it… it’s not a profit thing, it’s just about getting great music out there from some of the artists who don’t play at the more commercial mainstream festivals. People get to hear a lot of music that they otherwise wouldn’t come across. More events like this would create more of a sense of community, which is what I think Earthdance does.”

Theatre of Disco
HeyyyYaaTheatre of Disco are one of Sydney’s leading live acts, combining their catchy melodies with charismatic delivery and an imposing stage presence. Having headlined the Future Classic Christmas party and the Beck’s Bar at The Sydney Festival alongside Chromeo earlier in the year Theatre of Disco continue to command the attention of the Australian music public, with a solo show at Oxford Art Factory post Earthdance one of several impressive upcoming gigs. Former residents at Club 77, Theatre of Disco travelled to the UK to perfect their sound and returned with their polished debut EP that catapulted them into the music spotlight.

Mark Walton/Fretless
FretlessOne of Australia's most respected DJs, Mark Walton has been at the forefront of the Aussie dance scene for as long as many can remember, and has a musical output that spans everything from hip hop, breaks, house, funk and disco to soul, jazz, Latin, Afro, dub and beats. Over the past 5 years, Mark has travelled between Sydney and Brisbane producing and touring with the Resin Dogs and Good Buddha, after previous stints in the UK and the US. Fretless is the latest in a long string of acclaimed projects from Walton, and the recently released cover of the classic rock track ‘Cocaine’ gets the crowd going every time it’s played.

Africa Hitech (Mark Pritchard & Steve Spacek)
Mark PritchardAfrica Hitech is the new project from UK duo Mark Pritchard & Steve Spacek, both of whom are now based in Sydney. Pritchard explains that “Africa Hitech is a new project that we have been working on for about a year. We’ve been writing tracks that have quite quickly created this new vibe that is different to what we’ve done before. It’s sort of dancehall based, so a lot of it is quite fast, sort of like grime but with a techno rhythm, so not as lo-fi... We’ve got the essence of grime and dub step and Steve’s doing the vocals over the top, which obviously gives it a different flavour… we seem to have created a really exciting group of tracks that have the essence of UK music mixed with all the things we love.”
