Australia’s Number 1 Bboy Collaborates with Indonesian Mask Puppeteer in National Tour

Cultural Infusion proudly presents INDO Bboy FUSION, a unique style of dance fusion - touring nationally from 14 July to 14 December 2008. The concept for INDO Bboy, conceived in 2007 by Cultural Infusion’s Creative Director Peter Mousaferiadis and supported by the Federal Government, is the melding of traditional and contemporary performance in an engaging narrative of culture and creative discovery. By entwining two dance genres, old and new, the show’s message is one of discovery - the uncovering of self-identity through the medium of dance.

On August 8, the INDO Bboy FUSION Tour Launch will be held in Bankstown, at 1:30pm, in the PCYC Community Center located on the corner of French and Meredith Street. Various organizations such as the Australian Council for the Arts and Arts NSW have been invited to attend, as well as the Filipino and Indonesian consulates. Several multi-cultural programs around Sydney have been invited and the performance is open to the public.

Combining 5,000 year old traditional art-forms from Bali, Indonesia, and contemporary urban hip hop dance engages audiences in a spectacular journey, embracing yesterday’s traditions and today’s trends. Two talented artists, renowned within their respective fields, perform INDO Bboy FUSION: Indonesian Mask Puppeteer - Aryantha, and Lamaroc - Australian Number 1 Bboy Champion.

INDO Bboy FUSION offers a fresh, original performance format, creating an opportunity for audiences to be exposed to two genres of dance within the subtext of creative and cultural collaboration. INDO Bboy’s accomplished choreographer, Zteven Whitty, also an experienced physical theatre artist, brings eight years experience in classical and contemporary dance to this production, envisioning an outstanding example of theatre art. This production, a unique and challenging exploration of two genres, takes stories from both cultures to new heights. The show is designed to be appealing and accessible to broad audiences, with emphasis on engaging youth in a family friendly atmosphere.

Aryantha has been performing traditional Indonesian Mask Puppetry since he was three. His performances portray traditional Indonesian mythologies, dramatised with ancient costume and masks, combining music, song and dance. Bboy Lamaroc, regarded as Australia’s number 1 Bboy, has been active in the Hip Hop Bboy scene for over ten years. As a member of the ‘Fresh Sox’ crew (3 time OZ Bboy champions), Lamaroc has performed and competed across Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and the US. Lamaroc is one of the most active funk-style (popping & locking) dancers in Australia, touring with the ‘Cat Empire’ in 2003/4 and DJ Dexta & the Daily Shook Crew. Both artists explore their identities, similarities and differences through a unique, positively uplifting creative collaboration.

“I’ve been learning so much working with Ary, it’s truly been a once in a lifetime experience. All the traditional characters that Aryantha play have set vocabularies that are so lyrical and poetic; each have a particular message and feel which I can adapt to my B-boy character, which enhances my dance. I think Ary is learning from me too, so in essence there’s an exchange and really there is a B-boy Indonesian fusion going on.” - Lamaroc

The Australian Government is proud to be associated with this tour through the national performing arts touring program, Playing Australia, which gives Australians across the country the opportunity to see some of our best performing arts.
