This one-time only event brings together three of Mali's most outstanding Griots, or traditional praise singers: Abdoulaye Diabate, Mamadou Diabate, and Yacouba Sissoko. Griots trace their lineage to the 13th century Mandinke king, Sundiata, and have historically had the role of singing the praises of royalty and as the oral historians of their exploits. Griots continue their role today as performers with important social and ritual responsibilities in both West Africa and the African diaspora. Abdoulaye Diabate is a noted singer, as is Mamadou Diabate, who like Sissoko, is also a master of the 21-string kora, the harp-like instrument that accompanies the Griots' song. There is a pre-concert talk on the Griot tradition at 7 pm, free to ticket holders There is a pre-concert talk at 7 pm by Seattle musician Kane Mathis, an expert on the kora and the griot tradition.
