Acclaimed deep soul and funk legend SYL JOHNSON is all fired up for his first ever Australian tour kicking off at the Corner Hotel on Saturday, 14 February.
The Chicago-based singer, guitarist and harmonica-player, whose hits “Take Me to the River”, “We Did It” and “Steppin Out” are considered the equal of fellow Hi Records artist Al Green (who covered Syl’s “Take Me To The River”), will be backed by Melbourne’s own kings of super-heavy funk, The Bamboos for a romantic Valentine’s Night of sexy Funk grooves and sweaty southern Soul. Supports PBS DJs Mohair Slim, Pierre Baroni and Richie 1250.
Syl Johnson created headlines recently, after bringing a $29 million law suit against L.A. rappers Cypress Hill for their unauthorized sample of his iconic social commentary “Is It Because I’m Black”. “Different Strokes”, also recorded in 1967, was featured recently on the “Ultimate Breaks and Beats” compilation and has been sampled by Wu-Tang Clan, Kool G Rap, MC Hammer, and the Geto Boys.
But, Syl Johnson is best known for a string of southern soul masterpieces that he wrote and recorded at Willie Mitchell’s Hi Studio in Memphis in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His reputation as a storming live performer is equaled only by his rightfully royal place in the deep soul pantheon.
Syl Johnson began his career playing in Chicago blues clubs in the 1950s with the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, Magic Sam and Jimmy Reed. Syl Johnson is married to America's first black female police commissioner, Brenda Thompson and his youngest daughter, Syleena, is a grammy-nominated singer who has recorded with Kanye West and R Kelly.
