The 17th of April was a momentous day for modern roller derby in Australia. Four thousand eager fans packed the Brisbane Convention Centre to witness the first roller derby bout staged in central Brisbane in over thirty years with a thousand more fans turned away at the door. The crowd was diverse as derby girls are crazy with the oldest punter in attendance being 92 years old!
The extraordinary crowd numbers for the 2010 premiere Northern Brisbane Rollers bout is a new Australian record for the modern revival of the sport and is not too shy of the 5700 strong crowd that set the world record for derby crowd attendance at the Rat City Rollergirls bout in the US earlier this month.

The teams in play were the Diner Might Dolls captained by Sweet Enemy and Dead Meat and the Love Rockettes captained by Belle DeBrawl and Trixie Hellborn. It was a game of two halves with the first thirty minutes a display of steady one-upmanship. With a half time score of 76-71 to the Diner Might Dolls, neither team asserted themselves as the ones to have money on - in derby a 5 point difference can disappear in seconds. The second half told a different story with the crowd getting behind the svelte roller wonder -Dead Meat. Those who came as curious and neutral newbies soon developed a crush on the point scoring machine that is Dead Meat. Sweet Enemy and Strawberry I Scream, also of the Diner Might Dolls, were valuable all-rounders and big crowd favourites. In the end Love Rockettes’ power players Belle DeBrawl and Lil Ripper couldn’t fire up the scoreboard in their favour. The Diner Might Dolls served up a convincing win of 157 - 113.

All round the first bout of the season was a great success but derby is a dangerous sport and the players put their bodies on the line every game. We’d like to acknowledge the hit taken in the dying seconds of play by Love Rockettes’ Dreadly Diva who hit the deck with enough impact to put a crack in her helmet. The sight of her limp body scared the crowd silent as the ambos rolled it into recovery position. Eventually Dreadly was taken away conscious and in a wheel chair. She gets knocked down, eventually she gets up again, talks her way out of the hospital and comes to the after party.

The good news is NBR is doing this again and now that we know that Brisbane loves derby we will delve into our reserves of awesomeness and make the next bout better than ever. There’ll be more bars, shorter queues, more grandstand seating, and same old ready to rumble attitude for your derby viewing pleasure. Northern Brisbane Rollers would like to thank Miss Teresa and the Rhythmaires for keeping the crowd warmed up. Stay tuned for updates on the next musical ensemble to feed into the frenzy of pre-bout fever.
Bout 2 on Saturday May 15 will give the Love Rockettes the chance to wreak their revenge. Will they wipe the floor with the DMDs? Or will they wipe their tears from their faces and blood off the floor with another defeat? Catch all the action live, and book tickets through www.northernbrisbanerollers.com
