Boom Festival

Wednesday 18th August 2010 - Thursday 26th August 2010

Venue: IDANHA-A-NOVA, PORTUGAL

What Is Boom?. .. Intercultural. Multidisciplinary for sure. It is also trans-generational. Even better is being independent and sustainable. So much things?, you might ask.

Answer is simple: since 1997 we've been reinventing ourselves to capture new horizons for Boomers. We run away from stagnation and we can't conceive a festival based on line-ups and dance floors. We are dedicated to catalyze evolution. Boom is about mindfulness. Boom is about creativity. Boom is about change.

Be a part of this Dream. Be a part of Boom 2010.
BOOM LAB: THE GATHERINGS OF THE FUTURE

The new project of Boom Environmental Program is the BOOM LAB. We are focusing on being both sustainable and independent by developing our own technologies. We are focusing on Energy.

BRING YOUR CHILDS TO BABY BOOM!

We are an inclusive festival - families are welcome! We are teaming up with a permaculture school rooted in the waldorf pedagogy for the Baby Boom 2010. There is a zone in the camping where parents are priorities.

SUSTAINABILITY: BOOM INVITED BY THE UN

We won the Greener Festival Award 2008 - Outstanding Prize. But more important than awards are the practices. Our environmental efforts are increasing and we got one more recognisement - this time, the UN invited us for the UN Music & Environment Stakeholder Initiative.

LAST YEARS ISSUES, THIS YEARS ANSWERS

Boom Bug, entrances and what we want to improve from previous editions. Nothing is perfect and last year we had problems that we are working on to solve. A new location is the first major change. Here is a list of things that didn't went well in 2008 and our measures to improve it.

NO BRANDALISM AT BOOM: WE ARE A NO-CORPORATE LOGO AREA

We have no sponsors, we like to be independent and we do a festival for Boomers, not for corporations. Freedom For Our Minds! Brands will not invade your cognitive liberty at Boom. Unlike most of the public spaces worldwide, there is no brandalism at Boom Festival.

LIMINAL ZONE: BOOM'S CULTURAL HUB

The Boom experience is made out of conscious and visionary knowledge for more than 10 years time. In 2010 we are making an avant-garde fusion between Liminal Zone and Theatroom with a new area: The Drop. The Liminal Zone 2010 is under the concept of "Frontiers".

------------ Dance Temple ------------

GOA TRANCE

For those who were there, the goa trance era is unforgettable. For those who were not there, we thought that they should experience the good old music on a proper dance floor through a decent sound system! Before midnight one DJ and one live act play the old tunes - or the new-school goa - that inspired a whole generation of people to dance in forests, beaches, lakes, deserts, away from the daily routine. Only music mattered, even if the DJs didn't mix with those old-school DAT players! We don't want to be revivalists. But somehow we feel that reviving the spirit, the musicality, the amazing synths, the cosmic imaginary, will help us to enhance the mood and put some more ideas into modern psy-trance. Go back to a step forward with amazing artists. ..

PSY-TRANCE AND BEYOND

We invite DJs and live acts that represent the full spectrum of contemporary psy-trance: full-on, psy, melodic, neo full-on, experimental, suomi, dark, tribal, twisted, techy, progressive, or fusion. All these styles performed together to scale the heights of our fantasy and for allowing imaginative processes to take place.

LIVE SOUNDTRACKS

For the first time ever in the history of psy-trance, cinema and a live concert is performed together. We all know the cinematic potential of psychedelic trance. We all know that we need to add more concepts to the style we love in order to keep the evolution going. So, we invited a live act, we gave it a movie and the output is presented live at the Boom dance floor in one monumental session at the beginning of the night. Do not miss it!

VISUAL CONCEPT AND DECORATION

Mind expanding our senses, we are bringing the cutting-edge of psychedelia, taking our perception deep into the realms of imagination. Connecting with the symbols of collective unsconcious and in sync with the magic of ancient futurism, the visual concept of the dance floor is tunning us with the soul of technology and the alma matter of the Sacred Earth.

SOUND SYSTEM

Keeping the tradition of last editions, Boom is teaming up once again with the fattest bass and the clearer sound system specially developed for electronic dance music.

--------------- Groovy Beach -----------------

"We have grown used to connecting machines and funkiness"
Andrew Goodwin

Love it or hate it the mp3s have opened up vast new musical horizons over the past decade - how we discover it, how we see new subcultures emerging from it, and how our perception about new music is based upon it.

The Groovy Beach is all about a product of the present era of technological music. It is a dance floor to celebrate how modern music is made up of a myriad of different genres and how they interact with our inner tastes to make us richer - in a process driven by passion for new music.

Everyday the Groovy Beach is a freestyle zone of music where you can listen to dubstep and bass music, techno, cosmic disco, dub-techno, deep dance flavas, glitch and dub. The concept is, once again, to merge music styles and to clash soundscapes with an open mind place near the lake. Forget about monoculture, there is no music orthodoxy here!

We are constantly looking for the latest music around, here are some artists already confirmed. .. The line up has constant updates, keep in sync with these pages before groovin' in the beach.

VISUAL CONCEPT

Boom commissioned a crew of artists and designers to create a large-scale installation-dance floor. The concept is an educative art work that is built under the idea of reusing daily materials as a source for art.

--------------- Sacred Fire --------------

A communal fire, world music, beautiful gardens, a healing area, and an open source area where you can experience contact with our Sacred Earth - that's Boom Sacred Fire.

In many traditional societies music serves a healing function. The harp-lute players of West Africa are often associated with healing, and the players act as healers or soothsayers. In traditional Mali society music has a sacred healing role both for the individual and for society. Music is believed to facilitate communication with the ancestors, the spirits, and the Creator, and to harmonize the forces of the visible and the invisible world.
At Sacred Fire the rhythms, harmonies and melodies from all continents create a sense of belonging with the natural pace of the Sacred Earth.

Gardens and bioconstruction are peaceful and fulfilling. In Boom they are like a refuge with flowing lines and carefully placed plants and shadows. It functions as a communal point where everybody can meet, so we suggest some fantasy exercises: write a haiku or simply feel the natural landscape.

At night the fire burns and sweeps across the air with serpent-like shapes. Everybody sits gently around the fire and finds, again, a connection with each other as an unconscious communitarian move. Music starts. And the players fulfill their role again as the neo-healers of Boom, just like their ancestors did all over the world.

----------------- Ambient Paradise ------------------

Ambient Paradise is the name chosen to give form to the chill out area for Boom Festival 2010, producing a space with all the characteristics of a decompression chamber.

COMFORT + VISUAL INPUT + SOUND INPUT = CHILL OUT AREA

Sustainability is our major goal in 2010. Several measures are adopted to support this concept, as the use of a 100% reusable structure, bio-construction techniques and our lighting system uses 100% LED technology. Plus, our backoffice adopts this as a daily ethos, no paper use during the production period is a practice, giving preference to reusable data supports for information exchange.

Decorative and functional lighting, 3D scenery (autoclave cellular concrete sculptures), and the water as the festival theme, forms the kit necessary to provide for the visual requirements.

The scenery designer Rita Noro is invited to participate and we host once again the sculptor Broll Jholl Marrallo, and both of them together with the rest of the crew, give shape and aesthetic magic to Ambient Paradise 2010.

This years music selection continues to be a mirror of a diversity of styles within the range of ambient music, giving, for the first time, a particular attention to segments with little expressions on our usual program. Names such as Murcof and Antonio Testa, personify our commitment in presenting new landscapes and sonic aesthetics that are not related with the conventional ambient-psytrance but are some of the deepest and most ethereal music being made today.

We seek to show different music routes brought by musicians of different scenes, trying once more to contribute to the well being of the public and the artist hosted.

-------------- Live Art Zone --------------

Live Art Zone is the area responsible for the presentations of scenic arts such as Theatre, Dance, Circus and Performance Art, adding up to the offer of cultural diversity that Boom Festival has.

Our mission is to interact and communicate with the public and sceneries, using performances and shows of live contemporary art.

To share thoughts and expressions, to live through creation, action and gathering, to be a part of an alternative reality and be able to imprint the common memory with beauty, reality and skill, and generate a close bond with you, the public, the fuel that makes the Festival run.

The diversity will be as much as allowed by general characteristics and conditions, and we plan to welcome all kind of artists and proposals, without forgetting Boom's roots, and also giving space to young ones, eager for experience and inspiration.

For the artists, we promise you a powerful experience, a challenging public and a solid team to host your projects and energies. We thank you all for being a part of the adventure.

All around the Festival and on the main areas, the space and flows with be filled with performances and shows, finding the best meltdown between the area, the energy around and the artistic object.

-------------- LIMINAL ZONE -------------------

LIMINAL ZONE: BOOM'S CONTRIBUTION FOR A CHANGING ZEITGEIST

In line with the Boom 2010 theme of Water, the concept for the Liminal Zone manifested as an aquatic idea of exploring uncharted waters through navigating at the edge of different FRONTIERS.

The concept of "BE PREPARED" that was widely spread by McKenna in the festive gatherings of the end of the last century has never been more relevant. Today the main concerns we are faced with are Ecological Sustainability, Social Justice and Spiritual Fulfilment.

Re-localization movements tell us that "only tribes will survive" steering us "back" to community living, whilst no one trusts politics and old paradigm leaders anymore - there is a sense of "no time to waste".

So the Liminal Zone at Boom 2010 is solution based, ACTIVIST prone, and interactive. Each person present should leave feeling like they are a member of a new time and compelled to act, to change, to do something new.

Indeed, humanity is navigating through somewhat troubled waters and a great shift of immense potential is happening. We have now moved across and are at the frontier of something new - these are uncharted waters.

Never before in the history of humanity have we seen such an up rise of collective interest in all matters spiritual.
The energy on the planet is so intense that more people feel it every day. Some are having abrupt spiritual awakenings, others breaking down in apparent emotional crisis.

Through workshops, presentations, discussion panels and the Paradigms Films 2010, we are navigating through the turbulent and exciting waters of the current zeitgeist.

Our aim is to explore uncharted waters by navigating into the Frontiers of Time and Space, Frontiers of Behaviour and Activism, Frontiers of the Body, Frontiers of the Mind, Frontiers of Love, Frontiers of Art and Frontiers of Evolution.

On Day 1 (19th August) we travel at the edge of the Frontiers of Time and Space, taking humanity's pulse and asking where we are and how we got here.

On Day 2 our ship surfs the waves of Frontiers of Behaviour, with a strong emphasis on Activism: are YOU ready to make change happen?

On Day 3 we explore the power of the body to reach not only healthy but ecstatic states: natural healing, food, dance and movement and the power of the voice for pushing the Frontiers of the Body to the very edge.

On Day 4 we are exploring the Frontiers of the Mind. ..

Day 5 is dedicated to the Frontiers of Art and Sound.

On Day 6 we open our hearts under the full moon in an exploration of the Frontiers of Love.

On Day 7 the burning question is "Where to next?". An exploration of the Frontiers of Evolution.
