Ras Lee & Roots Band

Ras Lee & Roots, a Canadian based band, is one of Ottawa's leading purveyors of Reggae - Blues music. The band's musical message is a blend of Reggae and Blues influences - a distinctive world music collection. Ras Lee & Roots music is a multi-cultural and multi-lingual message of hope, optimism and joy. Bringing together a cornucopia of global influences, this band has fused different rhythms which are reflective of the band members musical and cultural roots. This fusion results in a harmonious musical celebration of the 21st century global cultural diversity. In live performace, Ras Lee & Roots provide an entertaining show, performing both cover and original songs accompanied by rich choral harmonies.

Ras Lee ( lead vocals )

Ras Lee was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica and comes from a family of rich musical credentials. He has performed in numerous venues throughout Jamaica and co-wrote and narrated the Bob Marley documentary film "Heartland Reggae".
In Canada, Ras Lee performed with many top reggae acts including Heaven's Radio, Roots Revival (led by Ernie Smith), Toronto's Reggae AllStar and Ottawa based Unity. He was nominated in 1986 for a Juno award and received a Canadian Music Award for his single "Moonlight Lover". In 1999, Ras Lee released the album Who Killed The Lion. He has since performed in St. Lucia, Montego Bay and in Paris.In 2003 Ras Lee who received the Canadian Reggae Music Award for the title track -" Who killed the lion"and was again a nominee in 2004. In 2004 Ras Lee travelled to Africa visiting Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya and Burundi and performed extensively in Burundi and Tanzania.

Sheik Mia ( bass, back vocals )

Sheik's musical influences are from his native Guyana, where he was exposed to the dominant regional rhythms of Calypso, Ska, Reggae and Soca and Rhythm and Blues. He has played with musicians in Trinidad and several bands based in Ottawa delivering ska, roots reggae, zouk and rhythm and blues. In 1997, Sheik played on the album Pave Reggae with Ottawa-based songwriter-performer Garnett Challenger and in 1999 and also on the release of the album Who killed the lion recorded by Canadian Juno award nominee Ras Lee. Sheik performs frequently at many local venues, annually at many local festivals and fund raising events. Sheik also performed with Ras Lee during his memorable tour of Tanzania and Burundi in 2004.

David Lacaille( drums )

A native Trinidad, David is a respected performer and a pleasure to watch. A former member of Toronto based Truths and Rights, David is a valuable session player as well as an accomplished musician. He has toured extensively within the Caribbean and Canada and has played with several major Reggae acts including Leroy Sibbles, Stranger Colt, Ernie Smith, and Bernie Pitters.

Mike ( keyboards )

Michael Chrichton was born in St. Kitts / Nevis, but has lived in different parts of the Caribbean. An accomplished pianist, Michael began playing at an early age and has played many genres of music ranging from Jazz to Soca. Mike has been part of the Ottawa music scene over the last 20 years.

Holly ( lead and back vocals )

Whever you see Miss Holly she is always singing. Born and raised on a farm in Greely Ontario,this 24 year old is no stranger to the stage. She started singing with her church choir at the early age of five. Shortly thereafter she began taking piano lessons. When a musical theater company opened in Greely she was seven years old. She got a part in that show as well as the 15 that followed. In 2001 Holly recorded her first single " How 'bout you" in Nashville Tennessee. She still sings country music in local shows in the Ottawa Valley. This is where she gets her Nickname. "Country "

Rico ( guitar, back vocals )

Rico is the man for everything. He plays various instruments for about 35 years. He started with guitar, later on drumming, vocal, bass and some keyboard. His travels around the world gave him the skills to play various styles of music. Based on his Gypsy heritage, he started with traditional Gypsy music, and made his journey to Rock, R&R, Blues, Latino Styles, Funk and Soul to Reggae music.Some of the long listed band names are, The Chefs ( Germany), with Rudi Metzler on the drums.Easy Funk ( Newcomer winner 1982 ), The Shoes ( R&R pure), Los Manollos ( latin in South America), Catch up ( covers Isla de Margarita -Venezuela), Carlos Czespedes Trio ( Latin /Jazz Venezuela / Caracas ) Sintiblues ( Gypsy music hybrid Germany ), Sisters the Band ( Covers and Origins Soul / Funk / Pop ). He recorded with various Artists in studios in Europe and North / South America.
