andycan (Andy Simpson)

Andy has been involved in the music industry since the mid 80s and has been an active producer, a promoter of club nights and bush parties, a live musician, DJ, stage manager and event organizer. He has, in short, had his finger in far too many pies!

Spinning vinyl and CDs as 'andycan' for the last four years, he has now found a niche with a brand of deep and progressive beats mixed with a trance and psychedelic edge. He has been known to chuck a load of electro in for good measure but only if the sound system can take it. He has also been known to surprise people with old skool, ambient, a serving from the cheese platter and some wild bootlegs when you least expect it so his sets never fail to be memorable.

He has performed alongside the likes of Disko Pussy, Miss Maxo, Gavin Martin and Dom Hogan at events such as Earthdance, Earthcore, Rainbow Serpent, Bullyboy Productions, Real People, The Sustainable Living Festival and The St. Kilda & Brunswick Street Festivals.

Under the title 'Real People', Andy has also promoted and runs his own monthly and weekly club nights called 'Pussy', 'Electribe' and '9 Lives'. The 'Real People' bush gathering in April 2004 near Anglesea was Andy's first shot at an outdoor weekend festival. Attracting over 250 people, this laid back affair incorporated workshops, live bands, Djs and performances and aimed to revive the good old fashioned bush doof that anyone could enjoy.

Andy uses 'Funktion One' sound systems for his events and actively promotes Funktion One in Australia being the Marketing Director and a Partner in the business. Imported from the U.K., these sound systems are quite simply the best sounding boxes on the planet. You won't believe the quality and power that these compact systems deliver until you have heard them. Many venues are now upgrading to Funktion One throughout Melbourne and Australia. Many live acts such as Moloko, Underworld, Leftfield and Goldfrapp insisting on touring with Funktion One systems.

Working under the title 'Eco-Events', a collective comprising of 'Bohemia', 'Shaza', and 'Real People', Andy recently put on official stages at both Earthcore and Rainbow Serpent completely powered by the alternative energy from the sun and wind. Watch out for the big red double-decker bus covered with solar panels and wind generators and powering a Funktion One sound system.

If there has recently been a Half Moon Bay beach party that rocked, then you can bet that Andy had something to do with it. Renowned for three good uns' under his belt with the last one attracting over 400 revellers, there are plans for more well organized events including lighting up the cliff scapes and even a boat-borne sound system!

Andy is also working with other producers such as Adam Cesare and hopes to release promo only tracks under the guise of 'Moments of Clarity'. A blend of progressive, psychedelic and world influences, his tunes are up-tempo soundscapes that aim to take the listener on an aural journey.

Should you ever be in need of any audio/visual equipment give him a call as he can normally be found working with Beny at Melbourne DJ Service (MDJS) in Prahran. MDJS offers a range of sound, lighting, props and acts to suit the small private party or the large corporate event. They even have rehearsal and recording facilities and their own private warehouse club! Check them out at www.melbournedj.com.
