This guide will try to explore the workings of devastate, compare it to other tanking moves, explore where it?s useful and finally run some simulations to see what speed weapon benefits most.
This guide is valid as of patch 2.0.7. I will try to update if things change in future patches.
The tooltip on devastate rank 3 is:
?An instant weapon attack that causes 50% of weapon damage plus 35 and additional threat for each application of Sunder Armor on the target. In addition, this attack will renew the duration of the Sunder Armor effect.?
This suggests that the devastate formula is:
(wpn dmg + normalized ap) x 50% + 35 + # sunders x threat
Testing during the TBC beta by Lavina / The Venture Co ? EU (http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html? topicId=78137860&postId=780908615&sid=1#0) showed this to be false. The testing showed the actual formuala to be:
(wpn dmg + normalized ap) x 50% + 25 x # of sunders + threat
This is a significant departure from what the tooltip indicates. The tooltip states a serious threat generator, the actual formula suggests a dps tool with added aggro.
As of 2.0.7, live testing shows Lavina?s formula to hold true still. This guide will use that formula.
Since the beta testing was done, devastate innate threat has been increased to 101.
How to maximise the effectiveness of Devastate?
An examination of the formula shows that devastate benefits greatly from the number of sunders on the mob. Let?s test devastate with 0 sunders and 5 sunders.
Assumptions: Warrior is level 70, wielding a 71.7 dps GM/HW Slicer 2.6 speed one-hand sword. Warrior has 1400 attack power. Mob is also level 70 with 4000 base armor.
Armor reduction formual is: (Armor / (Armor - 22167.5 + 467.5 * Enemy_Level)) * 100 Mob armor mitigation with 0 sunders: (4000 / (4000 ? 22167,5 + 467,5 * 70)) * 100 = 27.5 % Mob armor mitigation with 5 sunders: (1400 / (1400 ? 22167.5 + 467,5 * 70)) * 100 = 11.7 %
Weapon damage range = 149 ? 224, average damage = 186,5 The warrior?s white swing would be, on average, 186.5 + 1400 / 14 * 2.6 = 447 before armor mitigation, 323 after mitigation, 394 after 5 sunders.
Devastate results with zero sunders:
Damage = (186.5 + 1400 / 14 * 2.4) x 50% + (35 x 0) = 213,25 * (1 ? 27,5%) = 155 Threat = 155 + 101 = 256 threat
Devastate results with five sunders:
Damage = (186.5 + 1400 / 14 * 2.4) x 50% + (35 x 5) = 388,25 * (1 ? 11,7%) = 343 Threat = 343 + 101 = 444 threat
Even without the armor reduction effect of sunder, the presence of sunder ups damage of devastate considerably. Along with the sunder effect, the damage has more than doubled.
Is Devastate better than Sunder Armor?
Sunder Armor at max rank does 301 aggro per application, lowers target?s armor by 520, can be stacked 5 times for the armor reduction effect but continues to generate threat past those initial 5.
Assuming we have already put the 5 sunders on, should we keep on spamming sunder or using devastate? Without any points in improved sunder armor, both sunder and devastate cost 15 rage and are spammable on the global cooldown. As seen from the above example, devastate delivers much higher threat than sunder armor.
What if we put in points to improved sunder armor? Assuming we also have focused rage, our devastates become 12 rage, our sunders become 9 rage. So we can ask two questions: (1) Which move delivers higher threat per rage? (2) What is the weapon damage required for devastate to surpass sunder armor?
From our previous calculation, devastate threat with 5 sunders = 444. Sunder Armor at max rank does 301
Devastate Threat per Rage = 444 / 12 = 37 Sunder Armor Threat per Rage = 301 / 9 = 33,4
Devastate gives better return for the rage spent. We do both higher threat AND do dps, whereas sunder has no damage component.
So is devastate better because we used a high dps weapon? Let?s see what dps weapon is required to outdo sunder.
(wpn dmg + normalized ap) x 50% + 35 x 5 + 101 = 301
301 ? 101 ? (35 x 5) = 25 / 50% = 50. With any weapon + AP combo doing more than 50 damage per hit, devastate will deliver higher threat than sunder armor. A level 70 warriors just AP contribution will be higher than 50. Therefore devastate is a better tool than sunder armor under any condition.
Is Heroic Strike Better Than Devastate?
Due to HS being a ?on next swing? ability and the somewhat unpredictable rage cost and differing spammability, making a direct comparison is harder. We can at the most model different scenarios and test.
Heroic Strike Rank 10 does: A strong attack that increases melee damage by 176 and causes a high amount of threat. Causes additional damage against Dazed targets?
Testing has shown the ?high amount of threat? to be 196.
Normalized AP applies only to instant attacks therefore HS uses regular AP mechanics.
HS (10) damage = wpn dmg + ap + 176
For our warrior this means = 186.5 + 1400/14*2.6 + 176 = 622.5 Before armor mitigation = 623 After migitation = 452 After 5 sunders = 550
Obviously the single hit damage of HS is significantly higher. However, devastate is on the global cooldown timer, 1.5 seconds, while HS is on the swing timer of our slow weapon, 2.6 seconds. Let?s compare dps. Since HS is additional fixed damage to white swings, we can only compare HS extra damage per second to devastate dps as devastate dps is also in addition to white swing damage.
Devastate dps = 343 / 1.5 = 229 Heroic Strike dps = 176 / 2.6 = 67,7
From a pure dps point of view, the additional dps effect is significantly lower compared to devastate.
Heroic Strike of course benefits from a faster weapon, so lets see if using the GM Quickblade, with the same dps but 1.8 speed makes any difference regarding dps.
GM Quickblade data: Damage range = 103 ? 155, average damage = 129 Speed = 1.8
HS(10) damage = 129 + 1400/14*1.8 + 176 = 485 Before armor mitigation = 485 After mitigation = 352 After 5 sunders = 428
Devastate damage = (129 + 1400/14*2.4)x50% + 35x5 = 359.5 Before armor mitigation = 360 After 5 sunders = 318
Devastate dps = 318 / 1.5 = 212 HS dps = 176 / 1.8 = 97,7
Despite delivering big numbers on individual hits, the additional damage cannot catch up with devastate just because we use a faster weapon.
Since we want to see if HS can outdo devastate in a tanking situation, we also need to see the threat generation and the rage cost of it. Since devastate is on a global cooldown timer and HS is on a next swing, the only way we can compare the two is if we take a time frame and measure threat & rage performance.
We?ll take a 27 second fight to compare. This assumes the 27 seconds start after 5 sunders are applied.
During this time, we can do 15 Heroic Strikes OR 18 devastates and 15 normal white swings, since devastate is on a global cooldown and does not consume white swings.
Damage from 15 Heroic strikes = 15 x 428 = 6420 Threat from 15 Heroic Strikes = 15 x (428 + 196) = 9360 Rage cost of 15 Heroic Strikes = 9 x 15 = 135 Threat per second = 9360 / 27 = 347 Threat per rage = 69,3
Damage from 18 Devastates = 18 x 318 = 5724 Damage from 15 white swings = 15 x (129 + 1400/14*1.8) * (1- 11.7%) = 4093 Total damage = 5724 + 4093 = 9817 Rage cost of 18 devastates = 18 x 12 = 216 Rage gain from white swings = 15 x ((272,9 / 274,7)*7,5+2.5*1.8)/2 = 89 Net rage cost of 18 devastates = 216 ? 89 = 127 Total Threat = 18 x (318 + 101) + 4093 = 11635 Threat per second = 11635 / 27 = 431 Threat per rage = 91,6
So, even with a fast weapon that favors Heroic Strike on a per hit basis, Devastate significantly outperforms Heroic Strike in dps, total threat, threat per second, threat per rage categories.
Admittedly, the white swings that help put devastate in front of HS are subject to glancing blows but even with glancing blows factored in, Devastate outperforms HS to such an extent that it should always be the preferred threat generator

I've played a range of games from UO to WOW and what holds my attention more often than not are the diversions and the community - I have Centipede and Space Invaders if I want to sit around gaining points and leveling. LOTRO seems to have drawn a lot from existing popular MMOGs and added in a range of extras to create a familiar yet unique game world. The following categories will receive a numerical rating from 1(worst) to 10(best), and a brief summary of why I rated it how I did. These ratings and impressoins will be from my perspective - that of a casual gamer. Races (9.0) - "Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?" The races are the standard fare of hobbit, elf, dwarf, and human. Elves... oh, elves. Turbine spared us the exaggerated stupidity of several recent MMOGs. Female elves have clothes, male elves don't look like goth rejects, and both the donkey-ear handlebars and the double bowling balls for breasts are pleasantly absent. Turbine refrained from making the race a legion of promiscuous attention whores, and for that I thank them very much. Humans, are your middle of the road race. As usual, they're average at everything and can be all classes. Dwarves, are the short little stocky guys that you know and love. Hobbits are neat. They are the little busy folk that really add life to the land. You'll notice The Shire seems to come alive with both player and NPC hobbits. Appearance choices for each race change based on the place of origin you choose for your character. My old dark-skinned brown-eyed Gondorian looks extremely different from my pasty white green-eyed redhead gal from Rohan. I gave the Races a 9.0 because there isn't really any way to improve on the races other than to make up some new ones and that wouldn't fit in the lore too well. Lotro Gold WoW Gold WoW Gold Before you people who say this is a clone answer me, let me state a few things. There are a few "similarities" that I have noticed. But the ones I've noticed are few and far between. The first thing that is evident is the interface. Okay. The interfaces are similar when you first start out. But I can hardly say that justifies it being a WoW clone at all. And for the people who look at that alone and determine it to be a clone, have you tried pressing CTRL and at the same time? Give it a try and you'll see that if that's what bothers you it can be fixed pretty darn quickly. Another thing I noticed is that you have to go see a trainer to acquire/use some of your skills. Yeah, and that has been the case in just about every MMO that I have played. Not all, but dang near 90% of them. So, I'm kind of confused about this whole thing here too. Seriously, outside of those two things, what is it that people are saying makes it a WoW clone? I mean, when people were saying it was a WoW clone I was expecting it to be just like WoW. I mean, a "clone" is an exact duplicate. And I know that even if people were using the word loosely you would still expect a good deal of the games to be just alike. Now, that being said, there have been many things in the game that I have found completely different than WoW. First, is the way you build your character. There are skills you acquire from doing things in the world. Like if I keep killing the demon dogs in the Barrows, I get a special skill for smashing their killer canine skulls. This is a skill that I can then develop by taking on more of the beasts. I don't see this in WoW. Second, the way you progress your character development. You take those skills you learned from being out in the world and fighting things (note that the things you fight are completely voluntary, you don't want to build up the skill you get from smashing demon dogs, you can move onto another beastie) and you apply those skills to your character any old way you like by visiting a Bard and placing them on your character sheet. The possibilities are endless here depending on two things. One, what creatures you decided to keep fighting to develop your skill higher, and two which skills from that developed skill set you put into your characters skill tree. Another thing that is different is the graphics. This one I REALLY do not understand. I read some peoples posts saying that the graphics are the same. No Way!!!! They are completely different. WoW looks like a cartoon. LotRO does not look like a cartoon. It has a different feel to it. I don't know how to describe it, but cartoon does not come to mind. It fits Middle Earth well and does it sincere justice. Having a game look like a cartoon would not do Middle Earth well, in my opinion. I watched the LotR cartoons and never liked them. However, this I do like. Another difference is the story line in Lord of the Rings Online. It is good. It is enthralling. And it is a very important central part of the game. It's not something half ass thrown together, it is something that you are a part of throughout your journeys. You go on quests with NPC's who lead the way. They talk to you and you talk back to them. You follow them and they lead you through the story. And it all ties together to give you a feeling of being in the middle of an epic tale. This is not in World of Warcraft. As a matter of fact, I always felt that Wold of Warcraft would have been more aptly named, "World of leftouttheWar-in-Warcraft". In LotRO there is a battle going on and you live it in the story line. Another big difference I noticed is the focus turned away from just acquiring goodies. WoW was a raiding game. You went for that big ol loot. That was pretty much the goal of the game. I have not seen one person talking about their "phat loot" while playing LotRO. Why? Because that's not the main focus of the game. That alone changes the whole game to me. You're not there just to slash away and do raiding so that you can look cooler than someone else or kick their butt. This is a story driven game. An interesting story at that. So, I don't miss the PvP. I don't need it to keep me interested in this game. I could go on and on about the differences, but I think you guys get my point. And I'm going to leave the rest open for whoever wants to post some more. I don't want to make my initial post too long or hog the topic. I just really think that a lot of people played the beta for a short time, saw the interface, got to level 10 maybe (which is so just the very beginning of the game) and made a quick assumption. Going into a Hero Battle, a player needs a different frame of mind than other forms of PvP. Much like Alliance Battles, most effective characters in Hero Battles need a degree of self-sufficiency. Players tend not to bring a build balanced for 4v4 play because 4v4 battle occurs infrequently. If one of the players does not want to fight 4v4, it simply won't happen. Instead, a player can choose to split forces the whole time and concentrate on controlling shrines, earning one pip on the morale meter for outer shrines and two pips for the center. The more pips, the faster the score rises. Thus, most battles revolve around 1v1 or 2v2 skirmishes, and self-sufficient characters become crucial. As a result, the popular metagame build is one Assassin (player-controlled) and three Heroes consisting of a Monk and two "Pack Hunters" (named after the Ranger/Paragon pre-made character template from the Nightfall preview). Some builds replace a Pack Hunter with another Monk, support character, damage dealer, or shutdown character.

My warrior mastered in Hammer, strength and curses, and my strategy was simple - to cripple the opponent with curses and then hit him with all i got. For most part, my warrior survived rather well. I was able to do damage up to 51, which I thought was pretty good for lvl 7. But... um... you see, when I was planning this character, I didn't know that potion doesn't exist in Guild War >.<. On ... i think my second mission, our group did not have a healer, and from then on, it was a down hill for my warrior. The Charr mages (I forgot their name, but charrs holding staffs), could cast this life degenerating spell, and my warrior just get sucked dry by them. My healing signet doesn't heal fast enough... You get the idea, die-miserably.

They aren't the frontline tanks or the backline healers and buffers; they're the ambiguous midline whose role in combat is more complex and less clearly defined. Working the Midline: Second Rate Positions or Critical Facilitators? Ask GvGers what role they usually play and they'll normally respond with frontline, backline, or midline. The job of the frontline (Warriors, Dervishes, thumpers, etc.) is to disrupt, pressure, and, ultimately, kill the opposition. The role of the backline (primarily Monks, but perhaps including Ritualists) is equally clear--to keep the team alive. In contrast, the midline is less straightforward. Although a team might expect the midline to directly help kill targets or heal teammates, usually the midline's major role is to facilitate the frontline and backline in accomplishing their respective jobs. So how important is the midline? Lines in the Sand Players often debate which is more important: offense or defense, Warriors or Monks, frontline or backline. Rarely does someone espouse the importance of the midline over the frontline or the backline. In fact, when teams have new or less experienced players, it almost seems a forgone conclusion that they fill a midline role, while the most experienced players always end up in the frontline and backline roles. This sort of allocation could be a significant mistake. The midline's role is crucial to multiple players on the team because midliners provide both offensive and defensive support to the other lines. Thus weak play at the midline can hurt the team's ability to drop targets, while leaving Monks wide open to Warrior trains and other damage and disruption. So, while some may think the midline is a good place to hide inexperienced or mediocre players, these positions are such critical facilitators for a team's overall performance that it is possibly the worst place for these players. No matter how well your frontline and backline perform, it's hard to win if the midline doesn't do its job.

Don't Worry I've seen many people complaining about the price of flying mounts that are coming out. Yes, yes, I admit that I've been complaining and still will be because I think they are overpriced but doing a little bit of research I found a couple ways to make your life easier when the Burning Crusade comes out. I'm not in beta but I have a couple of friends that are in beta that sent me some tips. The Outland is supposed to have a lot of money dropping. Also the drops are a lot better then the ones on the "Original World".
Prepare There are a lot of new things that are going to come out with The Burning Crusade, especially new trade goods. It is said that you have to lvl your skill up to use the new goods. Since most of your recipies are yellow at lvl 300 you'll need a lot of goods to lvl the skill up. Here are many of the things that you should stock up. Runecloth. Runecloth is obviously a great thing to farm because it drops a lot. Also they are used for both First Aid and Tailoring. It is also rumored that you need truckloads of Runecloth to hit the next cloth to use the next kind of cloth which is called Netherweave Cloth. Tailors also use Primal Mooncloth and Bolt of Soulcloth. Rugged Leather is also a great thing because before Leatherworkers can make anything with the new leather called Knothide Leather and Heavy Knothide Leather. You start using Knothide Leather at level 320 Leatherworking. You should save up your Thorium Bars. Thorium can get quite expensive so It's not the main thing you should save up. Blacksmiths will also need Enchanted Thorium Bars because that is another thing that they will need for the expansion until around 315 when they can use Fel Iron. The same applies for the Engineers. Jewelcrafting is using an enormous ammount of the jewels already in the game so get ready to horde them for all the rich people who want to power level Jewcrafting.
Instances Instances will definately get you a lot of EXP and gold while you are trying to hit lvl 70 since the lvl cap is going up. There are going to be a couple of added instances in the new expansion so get ready and don't worry about your current gear and buy that 200G BoE Epic in the AH. There will be plenty of new items for everyone, including the BoE's. Remember that if you get a green or higher BoE that you win and if you have no use for it; toss it in the AH which will ring you up some money.
