DJ-cum-VJ Joey G heard the songs and found his life's calling

HE is the only guy in the stable of VJs at Channel [V] but 22 year-old Joey James Ghazlan aka Joey G isn't complaining. He's got a job that suits him to a T. He gets to dabble in his love for music and his fans adore his presentation style and yes, his good looks (courtesy of his philip - irish - ned parentage).

Joey was a DJ at Arena (at Twelve SI in downtown UK) when he was introduced to someone from Channel [V], who invited him for a screen test.

Joey passed with flying colours and signed on to the station in August last year. Since then, he has been a regular VJ on the music channel. However, Joey still spins his music at Twelve Atmosphere. "I am just freelancing now. It is a hobby ... something I love. I have been a DJ since I was 11 years old," he explains.

"I have a love for house music but right now, what I play is funky chunky house right up to anything tribal or funky techno."

Joey, who g rew up in Britian and Holland, was introduced to the world of DJ-ing by his cousin who gave Joey his old DJ equipment to play with. "I bugged my mum to buy the equipment from him. So, my cousin just passed me the turntables, took the money, said `thank you very much' and left," laughs Joey. "He didn't even teach me how to mix."

He learnt to use the turntables on his own and taught himself to mix (the music). At age 13, he even landed a gig for a charity event at a pub. "I still didn't know how to be a proper DJ but I progressed from there," Joey says.

He mixed around a lot with older DJs who invited him over to perform at parties. He would bring along his own equipment and play music for hours.

His friends ended up becoming his promoters and Joey started getting gigs at age 16. "It just blossomed from there. I would get a few club gigs even when I wasn't even old enough to be in a club."

Joey says his love for music probably began with his mother playing all sorts of pop music around the house while she was doing the housework.

"I was always exposed to pop music. I like music that is good it could be pop, it could be rock, jazz, contemporary, anything as long as it sounds good to my ear.

"Being on Channel [V] and presenting music is kind of cool because you have the whole music spectrum (to play with).

"During the day, I am presenting music; at night, I am playing music; and in my spare time, I am making music. Music is where my heart lies and in the future, making music is what I want to do."

Joey plans to come out with an album soon. "I've got tons and tons of tracks. At Channel [V], I've got the flexibility and time to use the studio. Hopefully by next year, I can go back to Britain and lay down some demos and put out some singles. If not, I want to start my own label because I have enough music of my own.

"I've been in Malaysia quite some time and in Malaysia, there is no dance label. A lot of people don't know this but in KL, there are loads and loads of dance music and electronic music producers.

"There is no entity that is taking care of or pushing these people. In the future, that is what I hope to do," Joey adds.

As for being the only male VJ on Channel [V], Joey declares he is spoilt. "Being the only guy is great. I don't have competition just yet! You'll never know. There could be a new guy or I could be gone. In the meantime, it is brilliant. I am working among cool people who are also beautiful."
