MELBOURNE BREAKS

Melbourne Breaks, the latest initiative between Phunktional and Australia's leading breakdance crew Wicked Force is a performance-based project which uses breakdancing to raise issues faced by young people including depression, social isolation, substance use and risk-taking behaviour.

beyondblue: the national depression initiative is supporting the project.

beyondblue CEO Leonie Young said: "We are pleased to be involved in this exciting project. It's a great way to get Youthbeyondblue messages to young people. We want them to Look, Listen and Talk - Look for the signs of depression, Listen to what their friends are saying, Talk about what's going on and Seek Help together."

Melbourne Breaks was established to provoke discussion and awareness and tackle issues head on with disadvantaged young Melburnians and their communities. Set up by Australia's leading provider of arts and community-based projects Phunktional; the project aims to inspire Melbourne's young people to develop their own methods for long-term change.

With the country's most established and highly acclaimed breakdance crew 'Wicked Force' on board, Melbourne Breaks will place particular emphasis on positive role-modelling through live performance. Wicked Force has won the Australian Breakdance Championships three times, competed in the World Championships, supported the Black Eyed Peas, Hilltop Hoods and Run DMC and most recently, appeared on Rove. With all members of the crew having experienced the issues addressed in Melbourne Breaks, they will share their stories of triumph amidst adversity.

Melbourne Breaks will reach 1,500 school students and be seen by over 3,300 Melburnians. By dealing with an accessible sub-culture (breakdance) to reach its audience, Melbourne Breaks is a unique programme that will engage with young people who are most at risk and create an open dialogue that will help them to communicate with their peers and local community about important issues.

With perseverance and a nudge in the right direction, Melbourne's young people can dream and greatness can be achieved. This is the aim of Melbourne Breaks 2008.
