The ELJO continues the auteur tradition of Duke Ellington, Gil Evans and Thad Jones—jazz arrangers whose real instrument was the orchestra. Evan writes all the bands arrangements, shaping the distinctive sound of the band, and its this approach which makes the ELJO stand apart from most big bands performing today.Musicians include: Susan Gai Dowling vocals Max Alduca bass Andrew Dickeson drums Warwick Alder trumpe

Regarded as one of Australia's outstanding jazz musicians, saxophonist and band leader Dale Barlow was one of the first artists to play when Foundry616 launched last year - and the club is delighted to have this heavyweight player back with this outstanding band exactly one year on to celebrate a fantastic first year of live music for Sydney audiences.A tenor saxophonist who also is a skilled multi-instrumentalist who plays the flute exceptionally well, Dale Barlow is one of Australia's few jazz artists with a real international profile, mainly stemming from his stint with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the 1980s (resulting in several albums, most featuring some of Barlows compositions) and recordings with American artists including the Cedar Walton Trio and Billy Cobham. He has also performed with Gil Evans Orchestra and Chet Baker as well as many visiting international jazz greats. Sophisticated, edgy, and stunningly musical, Briana Cowlishaw returns to Foundry616 after launching her successful second CD Paper Mache City in late 2013. Born out of the multi-dimensional musical frenzy of New York City, Briana Cowlishaw's Paper Mache City is a collection of songs that one would call stylistically and sonically diverse. Briana's music fuses elements of pop, jazz, folk and rock with 'a modern day Beatles air' as she likes to describe it!Her sweet tempered vocals and honest lyrics tell a story of life, love, confusion and realisation, drawing inspiration from the greats like Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. All the while, an underlying grounding in the jazz language and all it's delicacies plays itself out superbly. With her playful and quirky approach and a very strong band of musicians behind her, Briana has carved out her own niche in the Australian music scene,The band is firing and Cowlishaw sounds as if the world is hers. Andy Gander 4tet is a virtuosic group of first-call Sydney players each of whom is a key member of the modern Australian jazz elite. The group works in largely odd-meter grooves based in jazz, Afro-Cuban and funk idioms, combining this with polymetric improvisational interplay and free-form improvisation as well as hard-grooving traditional approaches to the music. The selections are Andy Gander originals as well as original arrangements of standard repertoire tunes, all designed as vehicles for exploration of the group's rhythmic interactive processes featuring all four members as strong soloists and ensemble players. This will be an exceptional night of music by one of Australia's finest drummers.THE AUSTRALIAN jazz Review:"In a Festival line-up luminescent with musical wonders, I can unreservedly say the Andrew Gander Band was the highlight for me " and I am sure many there would agree. Basement Jaxx
Quiet isn't a word that many people would use to describe Basement Jaxx, but in recent years, the lively UK duo of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe has maintained a relatively low profile. Still, even though the outfit responsible for international smash hits like "Where's Your Head At?" and "Red Alert" may have stepped out of the spotlight a bit, the pair hasn't exactly mellowed with age. This week, Basement Jaxx is releasing its seventh studio album, Junto; as expected, it's a madcap, genre-hopping effort that finds Buxton and Ratcliffe delivering another batch of shuffling house rhythms, soulful vocal turns, and oddball pop experiments. That being said, as inventive as Basement Jaxx's productions have been over the years, the duo first made its name in the DJ booth. (Basement Jaxx was actually the name of the pair's mid-'90s club night; it was followed by another party called Rooty, whose name was later used as the title of the group's second LP.) Curious to see if the boys' DJ chops were intact, we invite

Incredibly prolific and never beholden to any particular style, Paradinas has amassed quite the body of work over the years, and is adding a new EP, Rediffusion, to his discography this week. Call Super
In some ways, the story of Call Super (a.k.a. Joe Seaton) isn't particularly unique. Raised in the UK and now based in Berlin, he admitted in our Bubblin' Up profile last year that his background doesn't really set him apart from many of his peers. However, when one listens to his output, especially the records Seaton has offered up since he settled in with the Houndstooth camp, it's clear that Call Super isn't the average techno producer. Calling his music difficult would be a stretch, but it's undoubtedly challenging, even when it's focused on the dancefloor. His latest 12", "Depicta" b/w "Acephale II," which dropped just yesterday, was delivered with remarkably little fanfare and even less explanation, yet it's full of robust, propulsive rhythms. At the same time, its tunes are marked by ominous atmospherics, ghostly melodies, and crunchy percussive elements; essentially, the tracks exemplify how the Call Super sound is nuanced, complex, and designed to reward those listeners who are willing to sit back an

Lee Bannon
Only two months have passed since we profiled Lee Bannon as part of this year's Bubblin' Up Week. Normally, we'd allow a little more time to pass before tabbing a Bubblin' Up artist for the XLR8R podcast series"if nothing else, for the sake of continued artist development"but in Bannon's case, it quickly became clear that the Brooklyn producer wasn't going to be waiting for anything. His debut LP for Ninja Tune, Alternate/Endings, dropped in January, turning heads with its blown-out aesthetic and frequent nods to drum & bass, yet Bannon has announced that he's already working on a follow-up. Given his prodigious work rate, we figured that Bannon might also be willing to take on our podcast series, and he not only delivered an exclusive DJ mix, but one that's stuffed with several of his unreleased tracks. read more

Fair deal or iMoan? Kate Bushs request to leave the smartphones at home
Love them or loathe them, mobile communication and recording devices have become an integral part of our lives. They not only accompany us through many of the most intimate and meaningful experiences in our lives but allow us to record them and share them with others. There can be occasionally heard, however, the still, small voice of someone asking us not to.  One such moment is discussed here by Katfriend and occasional guest blogger Dorothea Thompson. This is what she says:Kate Bush (right), the idiosyncratic songstress of 'Wuthering Heights' fame, played her first live show in 35 years at London's Hammersmith Apollo last Tuesday night, kicking off 22 dates at the venue, all of which sold out in minutes. But before Bush made her celebrated return, she made a request via her Fish People website: that it would mean a great deal if fans refrained from taking photos or filming during the shows. The reason given was that she wanted to have contact with the audience, not with iphones, ipads or camera

Efdemin
In recent years, the term "deep" has been used and reused, to the point where the word has almost no concrete meaning in the context of electronic music. That's why artists like Efdemin (a.k.a. Phillip Sollmann) are so important; there's little question that his work is "deep," but in Sollmann's case, the descriptor has a lot more to do with the actual depth and nuanced nature of his music than it does any specific sonic signifiers. He's long been associated with Dial Records, an imprint with a long history of thoughtful, detail-oriented house and techno. On March 31, the label will be delivering Decay, Efdemin's third full-length and an effort that was largely recorded in the serene environs of Kyoto, Japan. Ahead of its release, we've enlisted the veteran German producer to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. read more

Vodafone Smart 4 Turbo review
The Smart 4 Turbo is the smaller of Vodafone's recent pair of 4G handsets. It costs a bit less than the Smart 4 Power too -- but is it any more of a bargain? Chassis & screen The Smart 4 Turbo has much the same size and look as the standard Smart 4, with a similar flimsy back panel. It's similar to the Smart 4 Power too, but besides being a little smaller, the microUSB power/sync port is on the top rather than the bottom, next to the 3.5mm headphone jack.
