Nadya Golski, that queen of gypsy soul and her spirited band of virtuoso musicians, The 101 Candles Orkestra, is world music at its best. It has all the verve and style. An alchemical mix of picquant melodies and spellbinding rhythms, styles ranging from Slavic melancholia and Manouche inspired French Chanson embracing Piaf, to romantic waltzes, tangos and boleros, alternating fast rhythms, toes tapping, hands clapping, dancers on their feet, characterises a night with The Candles.Nadya Golski the central personality and lead singer is renowned for her intense vitality and extraordinary vocal delivery, good humour, unpredictability and charm. For some unfathomable reason Spectrum hasnt played in Sydney for an awfully long time, to the point that some of our audience might not be aware that Spectrum still exists. Mind you, Facebook fairly exploded when Bill Putt, my musical buddy for forty-four years, died suddenly in August of last year and a crowd of 1500 from all points round Australia turned up to his memorial, so clearly a lot of people still remember Spectrum with some fondness. Tango night, Norton St., Ashfield. Black tie. Masque. In the penultimate tanda of the evening the dancers hang on for the weary pause till the bandoneon comes keening in again. This is old Sydney. Mind you, Facebook fairly exploded when Bill Putt, my musical buddy for forty-four years, died suddenly in August of last year and a crowd of 1500 from all points round Australia turned up to his memorial, so clearly a lot of people still remember Spectrum with some fondness. Despite not playing in Sydney of late, Spectrum has been constantly treading the musical highways and by-ways round Oz and further afield since Ill Be Gone (Someday Ill have money) reached the No. 1 position on the charts back in 1971. PAPE MBAYE & CHOSANI AFRIQUEThe beaming smile of Pape Mbaye is as well loved as his wide musical talents. Its an infectious smile that seems to go hand-in-hand with the West African rhythms that lie at the root of his music. Pape Mbaye, and his eight-piece band Chosani Afrique, bring some of the magic of West Africa to their audience " a night of Latin, reggae and jazz, inspired and led by this uncontainable master percussionist. Captivating and hypnotic, these are the sounds of a culture steeped in magic, ritual and a strong spirituality. Theyre the sounds that bring people together, that celebrate, commemorate and rejoice a world of music from jazz to RnB to pop. And theyre the sounds that Pape has made since childhood.

Tango night, Norton St., Ashfield. Black tie. Masque. In the penultimate tanda of the evening the dancers hang on for the weary pause till the bandoneon comes keening in again. This is old Sydney. The ghost of Johnny Garfield haunts the side-stage shadows. Down in the car-park, under a supermoon, the Suave Fucks are soft on the radio, and Don Walker sings Baby, Well Be, The Perfect Crime.Don Walker and his band will return live in October and November showcasing their new single, The Perfect Crime, and other songs from the acclaimed album Hully Gully.Walker has few peers, if any, in illuminating the darker underbelly of the Australian psyche, whether hes performing with Cold Chisel, Tex, Don and Charlie or solo. Despite not playing in Sydney of late, Spectrum has been constantly treading the musical highways and by-ways round Oz and further afield since Ill Be Gone (Someday Ill have money) reached the No. 1 position on the charts back in 1971. (Remember charts?) Along the way thereve been personnel and name changes, but weve been called Spectrum again since the late nineties and Im comfortable with that. So, what does the Spectrum of today look, and perhaps more importantly, sound like in 2014? Well, todays Spectrum still sounds like a band, mostly because, apart from newb

The Bug - Angels & Devils, The Bug - Angels & Devils
€œHow did we get here and where do we go now?€ asked Spaceape at the end of €œFuckaz€ on The Bug's third album London Zoo. It€™s the question vocalist Stephen Gordon leaves us with after two verses of social and political invective delivered in a series of fuck yous. €œFi all dem fucking people that ignore blatant facts just so they can maintain an order beneficial only to themselves€, fulminates Gordon on one of the many lines that capture the foreboding moment in which the album was released back in 2008. London Zoo sounded like what might be played out on a infernal sound system at the end of days. It was a premonition of the havoc about to descend on the metropolis, coming but a few months before the UK entered recession and, in a portent of things to come, Boris Johnson€™s first term as mayor of London. Six years on, the coda to €˜Fuckaz€™ remains as relevant and difficult to answer now as it was then.
