Cockatoo Island Party - Mardi Gras Weekend! inthedark
Event
Friday 2nd March 2012

Island Bar, Cockatoo Island, Sydney

The glorious surrounds of Sydney Harbour, stimulating conversation, a gentle leewards zephyr and Kitty Glitter, Harry K, PowerPuma + DJ Booth and more. This is the first time the venue has been used for a gay party! Kitty Glitter, Harry K, PowerPuma, DJ Booth Before you plunge headlong into the Hieronymus-Bosch-with-sequins landscape of Mardi Gras, why not gird your figurative loins (or your literal ones) with a little civility? A day-time-into-night cocktail party on Cockatoo Island. Which, Im sure, confirms your suspicion that two cocks are always better than one.

The glorious surrounds of Sydney Harbour, stimulating conversation, a gentle leewards zephyr and Kitty Glitter, Harry K, PowerPuma + DJ Booth and more straight up killing it on the decks. This will be the first time the venue has been used for a gay party!

Queens Theatre, Playhouse Ln & Gilles Arcade, Adelaide

One of the must-see stars of Australia's alternative poetry Candy Royalle Underground poetry is an emerging trend across the nation, driven by generation X and Y wordsmiths with cutting insight and great stories to tell.

One of the must-see stars of Australia's alternative poetry movement is dreadlocked, colourful and eclectic poet Candy Royalle.

A young veteran of the festival scene, Royalle is revered by modern day poets and word-loving audiences for her powerful verse and deep voice. They lend an almost soulful edge to her performances.

Royalle's new show Stories by Starlight sees her hit the festival scene hard in 2012 - kicking off at Melbourne's Midsummer Festival (18 - 21 January at the 1000 Bend Gallery) and the Adelaide Fringe Festival (1-4 March 2012, 9pm Queens Theatre).

Those lucky enough to see her pop-up preview at a fittingly illegal venue in Sydney in 2011 - says the show packs serious poetry punch.

Stories by Starlight sees Royalle team up with three piece ins

Recorded barely six months after the September 11th attacks, the focal point of this solo acoustic performance was the one-two long-form poem punch of 'Serpentine' and 'Work In Progress' (later rechristened 'Self-Evident'), both written about American society before and after 9/11. Difranco writes that she felt "terrified but resolute"? as she performed: "What did I think I was doing? The nerve of me standing in front of an audience of New Yorkers and dragging them from a fun night out on the town, back into the epicenter of their pain." In those two songs of near-unbearable tension, she manages to make her audience laugh, cry, and cheer in ideological solidarity - a rare feat for any artist, and Difranco retains just enough humility to not go over the top.

To her fans, she is both a down-to-earth friend and a passionate activist - this is an example of an artist and fans deserving of each other. Difranco is personable, and while often unnecessarily cute, it's impressive how she can swing from being vulnerab

Sat, 28/01/2012 By John Pilger Lisette Talate died the other day. I remember a wiry, fiercely intelligent woman who masked her grief with a determination that was a presence. She was the embodiment of peoples resistance to the war on democracy. I first glimpsed her in a 1950s Colonial Office film about the Chagos Islanders, a tiny creole nation living midway between Africa and Asia in the Indian Ocean. The camera panned across thriving villages, a church, a school, a hospital, set in a phenomenon of natural beauty and peace. Lisette remembers the producer saying to her and her teenage friends: Keep smiling girls. read more

Mon, 30/01/2012 By Nnimmo Bassey The nationwide strike in Nigeria against a petrol price hike ended under rather curious circumstances on January 16. Sat, 28/01/2012 By Simon Butler Very soon, Green Left Weekly turns 21. Thats not a bad achievement for a radical left news source in a fairly conservative, stable country like Australia.

Throughout that time, GLWs style, tone, look and the emphasis of its coverage have changed many times. If it is to stay a useful tool in the fight for social justice and human dignity then it will surely need to change some more in the future too. This applies most of all to GLWs online presence.

This Week in Copyright - SOPA, Golan, and Megaupload Freedom to Tinker
Syndicated
It has been an exceptionally busy week for copyright policy. We heard from all three branches of the US Federal Government in one way or another, while the citizens of the Internet flexed their muscles in response. The most covered story of the week was the battle over SOPA and PIPA -- the twin proposed bills that aimed to cut down on online piracy of copyrighted works by giving the government significant new authority to block access to allegedly infringing web sites. Other authors on this blog have pointed out how the bills show inconsistency in the copyright industry's position on regulating the internet, could threaten free speech in repressive regimes, and may ultimately be found by the courts to violate fundamental constitutional liberties. On Wednesday some of the most popular sites on the web "went dark" or otherwise heightened awareness of the issue, and the surge citizen pleas to Congress caused a surprising reversal of momentum in the House and Senate. [Update: Both PIPA and SOPA have now been s

Who won the Iowa primary " and does it matter from a techn Freedom to Tinker

As Americans know, the 2012 presidential season began officially with the Iowa caucuses on January 3. I say officially, because caucuses are a strange beast that are a creation of political parties, and not government. Regardless, the Republican results were interesting " out of about 125,000 votes cast, Mitt Romney led by eight votes over Rick Santorum, with other contenders far behind. The official results released today show Santorum ahead by 34 votes. However, its not so simple as that. First, theres the matter of paper ballots. The good news is that Iowa caucuses, unlike primaries and general elections in some states, are recorded on paper. So in a case like this, theres paper to turn to, unlike all-electronic systems where the results rely on correct software. Second, theres the matter of proper chain of custody. In releasing the updated results, it appears that some of the records from the caucuses cannot be located. It doesnt matter whether the records are pap
