Sunday 27th July

@ The Lockside Lounge , Camden Lock, London

Set slap bang in the middle of Camden market, and overlooking the famous Camden Lock, the Lockside Lounge is one of the best spots in Camden, especially in the summertime when the huge outdoor terrace comes into its own!

We'll be utilising this outdoor area as much as possible, with DJs playing summer soundtracks outside in the afternoon and a barbeque blazing all day. When the sun goes down we move inside and rock the Lockside's large dance floor until 2am, all in support of this year's Lake of Stars Festival in Malawi.

The Lake of Stars Festival was borne from a desire to raise money for a developing economy and charities and help raise the profile of Malawi as a tourist destination. The three day festival promotes Malawian artists and pr

Sila and the Afrofunk Experience Pay Tribute to James Brown Sila and the Afrofunk Experience

Bay Area dance kings Sila and the Afrofunk Experience (http://afrofunk.net) combine an

international vision with dazzling musicianship. Frontman Sila Mutungi rivets audiences with a combination of

James Brown's punchy grooves and Fela Kuti's relentless West African swing. Their debut "The Funkiest Man in Africa"

blows away listeners with its relentless rhythm and sharp songcraft, but can't prepare you for the band's potent

onstage energy. Sila sings of the African experience: the problems he and many others face every day, in a language

understood throughout the world. His lyrics and beats reflect the music, the language, the energy, and the spirit of growing up in Africa.

James Brown would be proud.

Cynthia Felton Releases Jazz Masterpiece Afro Blue – The Music Of Oscar Brown Jr. New York, New York- November 4, 2008 -With her beautiful voice and alluring style, it’s hard to resist Cynthia Felton and her newest release, Afro Blue – The Music of Oscar Brown Jr. Confident, sensual, and infectiously jazzy, Felton displays her pipe power and music knowledge thoroughly and proudly on every track. A testimonial to its namesake and full of irrepressible swing, Afro Blue goes beyond the status of a cover album and into the realm of undeniable masterpiece. Felton doesn’t wade into the tricky depths of Oscar Brown Jr. ’s work alone, though. Dependable jazz legends such as saxophonist Ernie Watts and pianist Cyrus Chestnut accompany the smooth vocalist through her musical journey, adding to the versatility already present in Felton’s talent. Bio RitmoBionico (Locutor Records , 2008)Afro-Latin band Bio Ritmo has been a favorite of East Coast college students for several years. Based in Richmond (Virginia), it is one of the finest exponents of the new salsa and Latin dance music acts that have sprouted in the New South (Virginia, North Carolina). Bio Ritmo looks back to the golden age of salsa, boogaloo and disco, in the 1970s, but at the same time, adds new blood to the genre, injecting synthesizers, samples, a vintage drum machine and other electronic elements. One of the most interesting aspects of Bio Ritmo is that they compose their own material. Puerto Rican vocalist Rei Alvarez, percussionist Giustino Riccio and keyboardist Marlysse Rose Simmons provide most of the high quality material. “Salsa is perfect for us; we’re such a crazy mix of people, influences, and styles. That’s what salsa is,” explains Alvarez. “We play on top of this foundation, so it’s a given that deep down it’s salsa.

Afrobeat Star Femi Kuti Will Release New CD Day By Day in N http://worldmusiccentral.org
Syndicated
Afrobeat star Femi Kuti continues to expand his musical palette with his latest studio release, Day By Day, a hybrid of Afro-pop, jazz and urban influences. The album has been a long time coming: seven years since his last studio album Fight to Win and four years since the live Live at the Shrine, on which he recorded early versions of three of the songs on this new album. On November 18, Day By Day will be released in the United States by leading independent label Downtown Records’ newly launched imprint, Mercer Street. The imprint was created as a vibrant outlet for eclectic adult-oriented and world music artists. Femi’s sabbatical from recording surprisingly allowed him to learn a lot more about being a musician. Femi learned to play piano properly and returned to the trumpet, his first instrument, which he gave up in favor of the sax. The benefits are immediately apparent on Day By Day. Femi says, “Listen to ‘They Will Run’ and ‘Better Ask Yourself,&

The past year of BBC DJ Charlie Gillett's musical travels are featured on Sound of The World Presents: Beyond The Horizon, a double-disc release with 34 impeccably sequenced tracks on Warner Classics and Jazz. But Gillett’s journeys are not always geographic. Gillett is the only music DJ on globally-syndicated BBC World Service, the rest of which is talk radio and news. So his weekly 26-minute show, A World of Sound , offers him a rare chance to try out over 300 tracks per year on an unexpecting worldwide audience. These sonic expeditions are a great testing ground. Some of the best and the brightest tracks make it onto his annual Sound of the World album. Many would be hard to find even online, let alone your local record store. “Last year, there were six or seven tracks that I found through MySpace, and this year there’s none,” said Gillett. “I can’t explain that.” This year, the songs’ unique stories speak for themselves.
