Machine Vision Do's and Dont's

Machine Vision Do's and Dont's by Austin Weber For some people, learning how to ride a bike or swim comes naturally. For others, it’s one of the hardest things they ever do. Implementing machine vision technology can often be a similarly easy or difficult scenario. Despite numerous advances, vision systems remain somewhat intimidating. However, thanks to new software and improved components, the black art of imaging and image processing is better understood these days. More manufacturers are becoming comfortable with machine vision, thanks to lower costs, simpler designs, increased flexibility, higher reliability, more powerful algorithms and increased processing speed. End users are also benefiting from increased functionality and new capabilities, such as higher resolutions, greater field of view and better color imaging. In addition, there is less propr

SXSW Documentary 'a/k/a Tommy Chong' Gets Picked Up (in a ra SXSW News

A few weeks ago, reports surfaced that the FBI seized approximately 10,000 DVD copies of the SXSW 2006 documentary, a/k/a Tommy Chong in a raid on Ohio-based Spectrum Labs. Spectrum established itself by marketing a detoxification product endorsed by Tommy Chong and had more recently become a partner in the documentary about the US Justice Departments post 9/11 crackdown on Chongs glass pipe business. The doc chronicles the lead-up to Chongs prison term and reveals the questionable legal tactics employed by the government to secure their high-profile indictment.

We spoke to filmmaker Josh Gilbert and Tommy Chong about this most recent incident. Information from the FBI is scarce (its a sealed indictment) but neither seem too surprised by the recent raids. Gilbert writes:

This story is a scary lens into a long term, right wing conspiracy to stack the courts and the entire judicial system with Republican zealots, who will determine the Rule of Law in the United States for many years to come.

Girl Power SXSW News

An ironclad male superhero didnt top the box office this weekend. Not even a wisecracking, fedora-wearing archaeologist. Nope. It was a film about four women in New York that made $55.7 million. Why the shock? Anyone in show business knows its a predominately male-driven world. But girls dont fret! Theres inspiration out there; you just have to know where to look. Take Heidi McLean, for instance, a former audio engineer, who founded two entertainment-support companies, PayReel and Crew Connection. Heidi launched Crew Connection with $10,000 of her own savings. Both companies have seen steady growth, but PayReel has grown 30% each year over the past three years and is now ranked 22nd among the Top 100 Woman-Owned business in Colorado and made Inc. Magazines list of 5000 fastest-growing private companies in America. If thats not inspiration, I dont know what is. (If youd like to read more about Heidi, click here.)

Technicolor completely changed moviemaking in the 1930s. Without Technicolor, Oz would have looked a lot like Kansas. A horse of a different color? I dont get it! Imagine the disappointment of doll collectors everywhere to see Scarlett wearing a dress that is some shade of grey instead of a piercing green velvet curtain? Yes, Technicolor greatly impacted the way we see movies. Scott Higgins new book, Harnessing the Technicolor Rainbow, captures that history with a comprehensive study. Higgins covers the challenges cinematographers and production crews faced in transitioning from black and white practices to the demands of Technicolor. This in-depth book is a must read for any film enthusiast.
