Jess Harlen Releases Debut Album Beat Broker
News Item
Release date: March 5 2010

Record label: Plethora Records

Harnessing her lyrical introspection, distinctive songwriting and fusing it with renowned Mercury Prize winning producer Plutonic Lab, Jess Harlen reveals her remarkable debut album 'Neon Heartache'. The record embarks upon unchartered territory of soul music, drawing on subtle hip hop beats, reggae rhythms and moments reminiscent of Motown.

Described by Rave Magazine as "what real soul is meant to be - from the soul, not from the formula", Neon Heartache's lead single, 'Watch the Water' combines the grace of acoustic melodies with dynamic rhythm while effortlessly offering up picturesque ocean imagery. It is a beautiful contrast to the track 'Diamond', a crackling gritty bass-driven blues number backed by midnight reflection and heartbeat tempos.

The second single 'I Go' is the album's most ethereal moment. Against a backdrop of shimmering harmonics, Harlen's earthly tones dance along a glistening undercurrent. The atmosphere is comple

mink engine release first singles from upcoming album Beat Broker
News Item
Melbourne electro-pop duo Mink Engine have chosen to create new trends rather than follow old and outdated rules with the release of the double A-side first singles 'Superpad' and 'Dick Chicken'

'Superpad' showcases Askii's love of synths. The track bursts with crunchy leads and synthetic strings, and lets the music set the agenda rather than the vocals taking the limelight.

'Dick Chicken' is an MA rated deep-fried morality tale. An overlooked and well-endowed Superstar Drumstick named Richard Chicken - after having been thrown in the scrap heap - rises up from his rejection and achieves success, fame and fortune.

The highlight of these tracks is the amazingly colourful video clips that the band have created themselves.

Australian Government pushes to introduce mandatory ISP filt news
News Item
The Australian Government has announced it would push ahead with plans for compulsory filtering of the internet using a "secret list" rejecting criticism the measures lack transparency, are easily circumvented and will do little other than strangle free speech.

Blacklisted sites would be determined by an independent classification body via a "public complaint" process, said Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, admitting there was "no silver bullet solution to cyber-safety".

Internet user groups have strongly opposed the plan, saying any such measure would not fully prevent access to illegal content, block access to some legitimate websites and slow down Internet speeds.

Conroy said a seven-month trial had concluded that blocking could be done with negligible impact to connection speeds.

Internet service providers (ISPs) would be offered grants to offer optional additional filters of, for example, X-rated content and gambling sites.

EFA vice president Colin Jacobs criticised the Go

Having taken the country by storm with the release of their debut 'Blackbird E.P.' a few months back on Hydrofunk Records, Brisbane seven piece Omni Anti are hitting the road for a tour to support their curious and oh so charming second single '27'.

Have you ever wondered what its like to be a grave digger? Omni Anti have, eventually penning '27' so they could explore the life and mind of those amongst us who dig graves for a living.

"We were taking photos of Dutton Park cemetery in Brisbane and wondered about it. It's a song for gravediggers who sit on mounds of dirt and play poker over 5am coffee. The chorus we gave this shanty was manic, orchestral in scale, probably trying to wake the dead with it."

A number of grave diggers appear - with kind permission - in the paintings featured in the video directed by short film & documentary director Jasper St Aubyn West.

In November Omni Anti will be delivering their action packed live show to lucky audiences in Brisbane, Maroochydore, Sydney & Gold C

spoonbill's new video has hatched... Beat Broker
News Item
Surrounded by lush plant life, an ornately decorated egg bounces with excitement to a toe-tapping horn melody. All of a sudden the egg opens and ejects an eclectic collection of objects. Before our eyes cogs, tools, instruments, trinkets and treasures merge into a newly formed visual avian species. The music video 'Feather Leather' from critically acclaimed Spoonbill album Zoomorphic, is a lush and exquisite tale about mechanical birds and their mission to rescue a captive friend from evil, oil hungry machines.

Directed and animated by Jonathan Chong AKA Dropbear, the creation of the animated characters draws reference from Victorian era wind up toys and Steampunk culture. Layers upon layers of digitally created images and photos, bring to life a new species of audiovisual animated characters within their own science fiction world.
