"A world class Latin band" - Rhythms Magazine

Captivating, lively and utterly addictive - 10-piece Latin outfit San Lazaro are set to embark on their long awaited nationwide tour and you better believe you're going to dance!

The band, consisting of members from Chilean, Spanish, Indian, Mauritian, Persian, Irish, Greek and Australian backgrounds, dish up the kind of cross cultural funk that's seen their fanbase swell since their inception four years ago. Indeed, for San Lazaro, music is driven by passion, not genre bias, with the collective embracing everything from hip hop, rock and reggae, all infused with the band's trademark Latin flava.

Led by celebrated young female percussionist and timbale player Nasrine Rahmani (Tumbarumba, The Oxo Cubans), San Lazaro's music comes alive through outstanding Spanish language rapper and conga player Sebastian Orellana and seasoned Chilean vocalist Franshesco Viran who shines up front. After a six-month pilot project by Toronto Police Services, the closed circuit television cameras placed at Queen Street West and Bathurst were removed yesterday morning. The intersection was chosen due to a higher-than-average violent crime rate, though some local residents at a January public forum felt the cameras would shift illegal activities to neighbouring streets. The CCTV tests around the city have also raised privacy issues and sparked debate about their crime-fighting effectiveness. Reader Simon Plashkes captured the removal process, which a hydro supervisor noted was partly due to "human respect." If you're George Weston Limited, you hire a photographer to shoot corporate headquarters at sunrise, just as neighbours in Deer Park get ready to start their day with fine Weston's or Loblaws products. The 20-storey octagonal Wittington Tower opened in the mid-1970s. Architect Leslie Rebanks won an honourable mention citation from the American Institute of Business Designers in 1976 for the artistic touches that were utilized in the lobby. A relative of the Weston family, Rebanks would work on the Loblaws store design rolled out in the late 1990s (see the Queen's Quay or St. Clair-Bathurst stores for early examples) and serve on the committee that chose Daniel Libeskind's crystal design for the Royal Ontario Museum.
