Most 3G mobile broadband connections are subject to usage limits, and keeping track of data usage at the moment normally means running an application from the mobile operator, or even checking on their website. Windows 8 will have its own usage counters so that users can keep track of how much data they've burned through over the current billing cycle. Applications will also be able to treat metered connections differently from unlimited ones. For example, a Flickr front-end might stick to low-resolution preview images when on a mobile broadband connection, fetching high-resolution images only when on an unmetered connection. Andy Ricker, the man behind Portland's James Beard Award winning restaurant Pok Pok, opened its highly anticipated New York branch Pok Pok Wing on the Lower East Side just last week. Eric Ripert has finally announced who he's hired to replace pastry chef Michael Laiskonis at Le Bernardin: former Per Se pastry sous chef Laurie Jon Moran. Ripert tells the Times: "He has his own style...but it fits in perfectly with what he have been doing here, incorporating some molecular into traditional ideas." Originally from London, Moran got his start at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxford before moving on to pastry positions at Daniel and Per Se. Laisonkis left his post at Le Bernardin last month to pursue interests outside of restaurant kitchens.

Last year, BaoHaus chef Eddie Huang cooked a two-night Chinese New Year dinner at No 7. in Brooklyn that received a lot of great buzz. Sam Sifton, who gave Huang's restaurant Xiao Ye a goose egg, penned a gushing piece about his meal there, noting that it was "filled with excitement and possibility, and the sense of promise that comes with a new year." And now Huang sends word that he's planning another holiday feast for this year at LTO, the Lower East Side venue where he hosted a blue crab series last summer. On January 24, Huang and his crew will serve a three-course family-style meal of Taiwanese dishes like sauteed clams over sticky rice and steamed whole fish. The dinner is $65 per person, with optional all-you-can-drink beer, wine, or Champagne for $30. Mathieu Palombino's Bowery Diner is set to open on Sunday, after several months of delays, and Flo Fab has an early copy of the menu (see it fullscreen here). In addition to burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, Reubens, and chopped salads, he'll be serving a full raw bar menu, steak tartar, duck confit with curly fries, and escargot-style whelks.
