| | Ars Technica | Syndicated | Windows 8 will contain built-in support for mobile broadband devices and smarter use of metered Internet connections, as detailed in the lastest post on Microsoft's Building Windows 8 blog. Most 3G mobile broadband connections are subject to usage limits, and keeping track of data usage at the moment normally means running an application from the mobile operator, or even checking on their website. Windows 8 will have its own usage counters so that users can keep track of how much data they've burned through over the current billing cycle. Applications will also be able to treat metered connections differently from unlimited ones. For example, a Flickr front-end might stick to low-resolution preview images when on a mobile broadband connection, fetching high-resolution images only when on an unmetered connection. Application bandwidth usage will also be shown in Task Manager, with separate counters for metered and unmetered usage. The blog post also demonstrates Windows 8's faster Wi-Fi connectivity, with Read More... |
| | Ars Technica | Syndicated | Microsoft has revealed a little more of the Windows 8 Store experience, with screenshots and video of browsing the store, application search, and the install and upgrade experience. The store will be the sole source for non-enterprise users to get Metro applications; it will also include links, but no purchasing or installation, to certain desktop applications. The post describes the major parts of the store—browsing, searching, the descriptions for each application—and showed how application pages will pick up their particular application's branding. The store will handle installation and updating for Metro applications. Updates will be automatically downloaded in the background—though only when using an unmetered Internet connection—and installed on-demand. Recognizing the growth in multi-PC households, the store also handles reacquisition of previously purchased/downloaded applications on different PCs. Apps can be installed on up to five machines, and the store can show you all Read More... |

| | Eater | Syndicated | Krieger This week Pete Wells weighs in on the most ambitious, expensive, and some would say ill-advised opening of the fall season, Romera. And he awards it a disappointing one star. He doesn't hate the strange basement dining room. He doesn't hate the food. But he also doesn't love the pretension of the place and notes that at the end of the day, Romera is "a restaurant that wants to be admired, not enjoyed":If you give yourself over to the experience, a meal at Romera can refresh your perspective on what’s in front of you, one of the gifts of art. Yet as much as you might admire Dr. Romera, you can’t help feeling that you will never be able to admire him quite as much as you’re supposed to. ...to eat at Romera New York is to be told repeatedly that you are in the presence of greatness, while the evidence of your senses tells you that you are in the presence of, at best, okayness.Okayness at $245 a head (plus wine, tax, and tip). | | Eater | Syndicated | Andy Ricker, the man behind Portland's James Beard Award winning restaurant Pok Pok, opened its highly anticipated New York branch Pok Pok Wing on the Lower East Side just last week. Ricker is showcasing his wing skills at his new Thai street food restaurant, in the former Baohaus location, on Rivington. Apparently, the chef has been cooking on electric stoves because the the small spot doesn't yet have gas! Word on the street, this has not affected the quality wings he is churning out. Here is what people are saying: The Mostly Good News: An Eater reader wrote a Yelp review about the addictive wings at this spot: "I came just for the wings after reading about the opening on eater. I found them meaty and crisp and the small amount of cucumbers, greens and pickled carrots were a perfect palet cleanser. My only complaint was that the wings were not properly sauced all over. The first bite was into dry crisp meat. For 13 dollars I want a wing covered in sweet sticky fish sauce. Overall the wings are addictive a Read More... |
