Roadhouse Rebels Bio

Roadhouse Rebels is an Aussie 60's & 70's pub rock blues covers band with the emphasise on sounding like the music from that era using authentic instruments such as Ray Vanderby's 1959 Hammond C3 organ and Leslie rotating speaker. Roadhouse Rebels was founded in 2007 by veteran sideman Hammond organist Ray Vanderby and the band members have had many years experience performing songs from this classic rock blues era both in their own bands as well as being hired as sidemen to some of Australia's top artists including: Blackfeather, Doug Parkinson, Marcia Hines and Stevie Wright. The band is based in Orange NSW and travel throughout the central west performing successful shows in pubs and clubs. If you like the sound of The Doors, Steppenwolf, Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Cream, Deep Purple, Manfred Mann, Free, John Mayall, Blues Brothers, The Angels, AC/DC, The Animals and The Troggs, then you will love Roadhouse Rebels!

Charley Patton and Various Artists The Definitive Charley Patton - 75 Year Anniversary Edition (Proper Records, 2009)

Considered as one of the fathers of the Mississippi Delta blues, Charley Patton was performing professionally and writing songs by the age of 19. Armed with a collection of country, Southern folk and pop tunes, as well as blues numbers, Patton worked the rounds of the party, juke joint and fish fry circuit before stepping in front of the mikes in 1929 to set down 14 tracks in wax for Paramount Records. While not the first blues musician to record, both Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Blake had recorded earlier, Patton found some success with his first Paramount recording, especially with the tunes “Pony Blues” and “Banty Rooster Blues.” He would go on to record three more sessions for Paramount and one last time for the American Recording Company in New York City in 1934.

It’s not every day I get to listen to an American blues-Indian Classical music fusion recording. I have heard my share of jazz Indian fusion recordings, but “Rishte” by classical Indian vocalist Najma Akhtar and American guitarist Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley) happens to be a first for my ears. And it has taken a few listens before the music actually sunk in.

First I would like to say that I was impressed with Najma Akhtar’s short biographical notes found in the CD booklet. “In October of 2005, while visiting relatives in India and Pakistan, Najma was caught in the South Asian earthquake. Thankfully, she and her family were safe, but she was surrounded by devastation. Instead of returning home to London, Najma became a caring humanitarian, a role similar to one she took years before in Bosnia…” Besides her humanitarian efforts, Akhtar also possesses an incredible vocal talent t

The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents for two nights July 7 - 8, 2009, the powerful blues vocalist, and winner of seven W.C. Handy Awards, Shemekia_Copeland, touring in support of her new Telarc release Never Going Back. Band members include Arthur Neilson (guitar), Rod Gross (drums), Jeremy Baum (keyboards) and Kevin Jenkins (bass). Set times Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30pm. Doors open at 6pm. With Never Going Back, Shemekia_Copeland's story represents a crossroads on her ongoing artistic journey – a place where numerous new avenues are open to her. While she will always remain loyal to her blues roots, Never Going Back takes a more forward view of the blues, and in so doing points her music and her career in a new direction.
