Annie Bacon .
Event
Thursday, 8th April 2010

Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Ave @ Prince,

With sparkle and spitfire, musical soothsayer Annie Bacon heartfully woos, artfully wows and effortlessly wins you over with smart and catchy Indie Pop songs.

Annie Bacon takes feminine empowerment to the personal level with her song "I Am Great & You Are Just an Idiot." Not only will you be humming the tune around the office you may just make it your new anthem. A refreshing combination of honesty, wit and musicality speaks for a generation of women who know themselves and make their own choices.

Comparisons range from Feist to Stevie Nicks, but with her utterly adorable presence and contagious songs, Annie Bacon is a genre all her own. Her music is frothing with Folk Pop playfulness, with sensitive, highly literate lyrics, and a compelling voice leading gorgeous harmonic textures and playful riffs. Every song is a story gathered from Annies study of humanity, life, and awe, artfully carrying the listener and keeping them waiting for the resolution. Comfortable on the electric or acoustic guitar, the u

Memory Tapes Listen Watch More than a few of these singles came from Philadelphia's Dayve Hawk in the guise of either Memory Cassette, Weird Tapes, or Memory Tapes. To this point, he'd served as something of a microcosm for this sound, which has created intriguingly hazy, wistful but beat-informed one-offs and EPs, but nothing weighty enough to get it past “something we did that one summer,” as if it were a road trip or ill-fated romance recalled years later. That was before Seek Magic, a record of achingly gorgeous dance-pop that captures both the joy of nostalgia and the melancholic sense that we're grasping for good times increasingly out of reach. Initially, Seek Magic's power derives from an intensely personalized ability to unlock hidden chambers in our memory banks. The half-submerged guitars that introduce “Swimming Field” suggest this is as a soundtrack for a restless evening, but between its F-G chord progression and aqueous thumb-piano and panflute synths, I'm reminded

Phrase never ceases to amaze when it comes to a collaboration. Opting to avoid the cliche concept of "I'm going to do a track with every rapper I know", Phrase has consistently broken the mold through his collabrations with artists such as Kram (Spiderbait), Wendy Matthews, Ian Kenny (Karnivool/Birds of Tokyo) & Jackson Jackson. Michael Morph has been busy readying his much-anticipated album for Pure Mint, and here is the leadoff single Go Cat Go!.

Built around a mirth-making robotic voice intoning the familiar lyric from rock 'n' roll standard, 'Blue Suede Shoes', this catchy fidgety electro cut almost recalls Daft Punk in its skilful use of a simple-yet-deadly computerised vocal. With plenty of freaky noises and an absurdly infectious pitching bassline to satisfy the headz, this is a welcome return to the fray from somebody tipped by all the dance press as a DJ/producer to watch.

Theres a big remix package to go with this

Historicist: Disaster at Hogg's Hollow Torontoist

Every Saturday at noon, Historicist looks back at the events, places, and characters"good and bad"that have shaped Toronto into the city we know today.

"Breaking Ground," a commemorative quilt by Laurie Swim hanging at York Mills subway station. Photo by Rmi Carreiro/Torontoist. This week saw the installation of a quilt at York Mills subway station to honour five men who lost their lives in what became known as the Hoggs Hollow Disaster. The deaths of Pasqualle Allegrezza, Giovanni Correglio, Giovanni Fusillo, Alessandro Mantella, and Guido Mantella while working on a watermain under the Don River on March 17, 1960, and the press coverage of the exploitation of their fellow Italian immigrant construction workers led to the strengthening of Ontarios labour laws. Work conditions for the thousands of Italian immigrants who laboured during Torontos postwar suburban boom were anything but ideal. While union-fought guarantees of lunch breaks and certain safety requirements eased the workday of those
