Mr Diagonal and the Black Light Orchestra Brussels-based Mr Diagonal and the Black Light Orchestra are fast becoming one of the most singular and intruiging cabaret-pop phenomena in the galaxy. Combining Belgian surrealism, English pop and classical orchestration, their deranged, wide-ranging theatre music incorporates elements of Brecht and Weil, Nol Coward, Van Dyke Parks, Monty Python, Frank Zappa, Tom Waites, Douglas Adams and the Residents. The Black Light Orchestra is led by mainman Mr Diagonal (aka Scottish-born pianist/singer/actor Dan Barbenel), hailed as clearly a genius and the rightful hier of Van Dyke Parks. He is aided and abetted by 4 crazed multi-instrumentalists from the Brussels scene; on piccolo/alto flute, baritone/alto sax, bass guitar, analogue keyboards, drums, guitar, glockenspiel, type london england uk live Read More... |
| | | Blog Entry | Hesam Faryad (Singer, lyricist & Melodist) was born on September 8th, 1980 in Tehran, Iran. As an only child, and with his parents by his side, he grew up in his grandfathers traditional house. With Jasmine flowers scattered in the backyard, and an old Mulberry tree beside a small pond full of fish. His poetic father known for his vibrant voice, entertained and performed for the local population. From the tender age of five Hesam sang with his father and quickly acquired the ability to perform live. It was at this age that he sang the popular song To Ey Pari Kojaie originally sang by Master Ghavami, in a gathering of four hundred people. He never forgets the reactions he received from the crowd. People were staring at me. No one moved. They seemed almost in a trance. When I finished, everyone applauded cheerfully. With so much music in his life, it was only a matter of time before Hesam realized that music was in his blood. It was something that came so naturally to him that when he sang it was almost like Read More... |

| | Eater | Syndicated | As noted yesterday, this week Pete Wells awards a disappointing one star to chef John Delucie's swanky Upper East Side restaurant Crown: "Like the work of the best Upper East Side caterers, most of the cooking at Crown is agreeably dull, with occasional pockets of excellence amid some patches of unalloyed boredom...In the end, there are really only two kinds of things to eat at Crown, concessions for dieters and rewards for carnivores...The carnivores walk away happier, naturally." NYT Steve Cuozzo wishes Caffe Storico could live up to the hype and do justice to its setting: "Chicken liver crostini induce moans — the meat crumbly, herbally assertive and served on crunchy grilled bread. But doughy arancini and dreary octopus inspired little hope for the rest of the meal...Mis-timed pasta arrived lukewarm. Salmon ordered medium-rare was so overcooked it hardly resembled salmon. Inadequately braised veal osso bucco clung stubbornly to the bone." NYP Ryan Sutton encounters some iffy service but delicious Read More... |

| | Clubplanet Nightlife Features | Syndicated | Now that we have gone through the annual American ritual of over-eating, over-drinking and watching football all day, we can officially start the holiday season. Downtown has been quiet for a few days, however, Christmas trees are being lined up along the streets. Even though the weather has been unpredictably warm, the shift in the season compels you to snuggle up in a cozy restaurant or bar with your friends. This past week I warmed up in a few different downtown spots. Early in the week I started at a wine bar in the West Village - 8th Street Wine Cellar. From 4PM-7PM this little bar has $18 bottles of wine. The selection was pretty diverse. We chose to enjoy a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. After the vino my friend and I walked to Alta just around the corner. I had been hearing about the sangria at this place for months. I wasnt there just to booze, of course, I wanted to eat! The list of small plates was fairly substantial. Thankfully, we had a very friendly server to gu Read More... |
