For thirty years the Tokyo String Quartet has been universally regarded as one of the supreme chamber ensembles of the world. The Quartet performs two classic programs on this tour, one pairing Haydn with Brahms, the other Beethoven with Mendelssohn. Each pair is contrasted with Carl Vine's fifth string quartet, commissioned for Musica Viva by its Patron, Kenneth Tribe AC.

Igor STRAVINSKY

Octet for Winds

Max BRUCH

Octet for Strings

This special Encounter presents music that was written while W.R. Hearst was in residence at Hearst Castle (1919-1947), a rich and important period in classical music. Inspired by a beautiful dream, Stravinsky's Octet for Winds (1923) returned to the musical forms of bygone eras in a neoclassical style. Like Hearst Castle itself, the work combines the visionary (tonality and instrumentation) with tradition (European musical architecture). The lushly beautiful Octet for Strings (1920) by Max Bruch harkens back to the Romanticism of Brahms. Enjoy sumptuous hors d'oeuvres, award-winning wines from Tablas Creek Vineyard and a Pacific sunset on the Neptune Terrace before the intimate presentation of these engaging works of the early 20th century.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nashville, TN--October 3, 2005--Who knew that this country singer was really a closet chanteuse? Dyann Woody makes a seamless transition from 'Yee Haw' to 'Ooh La La'. She not only has the voice of an angelic siren, but what will amaze you even more is just how easy and pleasing her music is to listen to. She reaches across many genres and meshes elements of '70's singer/songwriter style, jazz, blues and pop with the art of a well-crafted lyric.

Although this is Dyann's first solo album, she has shared musical success with her husband as part of the Country Music Group, The Woodys. Their debut album on Rounder Records went #1 on the Americana charts; they were voted the Top County Vocal Duo at the International Music News Awards and have received worldwide critical acclaim for all three of their albums. However, there was still a part of Dyann that was musically unfulfilled. She wanted to write songs that expressed all of the emotions and experiences that she and other women h

Najma Akhtar & Gary Lucas

Rishte (World Village, 2009)

It’s not every day I get to listen to an American blues-Indian Classical music fusion recording. I have heard my share of jazz Indian fusion recordings, but “Rishte” by classical Indian vocalist Najma Akhtar and American guitarist Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley) happens to be a first for my ears. And it has taken a few listens before the music actually sunk in.

First I would like to say that I was impressed with Najma Akhtar’s short biographical notes found in the CD booklet. “In October of 2005, while visiting relatives in India and Pakistan, Najma was caught in the South Asian earthquake. Thankfully, she and her family were safe, but she was surrounded by devastation. Instead of returning home to London, Najma became a caring humanitarian, a role similar to one she took years before in Bosnia…” Besides her humanitarian efforts, Akhtar also possesses an incredible vocal talent t

After releasing the new and breathless DKMA pres. Andrastea album "The Ascent" on CD, it's time for a special vinyl edition. The 4-track LP features the album-track "Herdsman" and three additional tracks which you can`t find on CD and the download version of the album. The second track "She's Devine" with the beautiful poetic voice of Stacey Jethro was originally released 2002 on the label FFR (The Devine EP). Dana Kelley re-edited a new version for this release.

The sound of the LP ranges between classical house rhythms and arrangements over breathless clear minimalism and chunky tech-house to very soulful downbeat and ambient titles, always with this rooted and honest sound. Acid-lines take place as well as jazzy organ-improvisations, powerful basslines as well as subtile backround-elements, soulful vocals as well as tricky architectural sample-constructions and sometimes the arrangements leave their glossy surfaces to sproud into the borders of the compactness and homogeneity and create needful edges in

The sixth WHITE release comes from "Edward". Once again it is an artist EP, in order to get deeper insights of a WHITE artist's work. The first track features a young talented singer by the name of "Sara Clark". "In The Mood" reminds of Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky". In few years there could be a whole generation begotten to the sound of Edward's new A side... On the surface it is a dark piece about the trance as a state, beauty and love. Even if those words sounds like a true clich in terms of electronic dance music. But in its very own way it is violent in its tenderness. Bittersweet to the deep ground. A reunion with final consequences... The flipside contains another highlight: "At the end of a tunnel" offers a good housy block party vibe (not the band). Euphoria with tears of joy... "It is all good in the end! The end titles roll, and I am still alive... " you may think. While "Lissboa 07" is the dubby afterglow for later... "What have I done..." would be the classical question to ask... In
