What Future for the Mobile Footprint? spikedevents
Event
Wednesday 3rd October 2007

The Commonwealth Club, 25 Northumberland Avenue, London WC2N 5AP

Debating the impact of mobile communications on the environment Environmental issues are posing big questions for the mobile communications industry, from the recycling of handsets and powering of chargers to the siting of mobile masts. This event is the public launch of an online debate, hosted by spiked and sponsored by O2. It takes a hard look at the measures that the industry is now taking and planning - in cooperation with other corporate sectors and government - to reduce its carbon footprint.

What is the best way to manage the future of mobile's impact on the environment? How far should companies go to educate their customers on environmental issues - whose responsibility is it anyway? And what difference can the various initiatives make? Who will really benefit from them?

There will be a drinks reception before and after the debate.

speakers:

David Hall, international campaign director, We're in this Together

Richard Kilgarriff , chief operating officer, Global Cool

CARL CRAIG - Planet-e communications, Detroit True genius is rarely recognised in it's own time frame, but to many Carl Craig is one. He would surely not claim such but to those of us who have been touched by his music few could argue.

He has few equals in terms of the artistry, influence, and diversity of his music. He makes daring futuristic electronic music, soulful and robotic at the same time. His aliases include 69, Psyche, BFC, Paperclip People & Tres Demented . First releasing in 1989, on Derrick Mays' Transmat label & later on his own label, Planet E. Since then there have been seven highly acclaimed artist albums & countless single releases inc. classic's such as 'Throw.' He's made over 70 remixes for artists as diverse as Tori Amos, Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode & UNKLE to name but a few.

In '98 he toured his ground breaking Innerzone Orchestra globally. f

Music Talk Session Wrap Up MusicDish
News Item

by David Knight (Music Talk Sessions),

Recording artists new to the Music Talks community, the session wrap up is an overview of previous sessions. In the wrap-ups I highlight what took place during the sessions along with initial information about the sessions. Video footage of the sessions will be released in the coming weeks. Let's jump into the wrap-ups!

Listen 2 Ya Mix launched New York and Los Angeles February sessions. The recording engineers Peter Barker, Keith Wechsler and Drew Daniels really got into listening to the music and providing the creative and technical feedback to artists. All recording engineers in NY and LA got up from the dais and went to the back of the room to have a more accurate listening position, treating Listen 2 Ya Mix as they would any professional critical listening situation. As a whole many of the songs we listened to were pretty well recorded. I believe it's a sign that recording artists are starting to embrace the recording process. While we don't strive to

MediaDefender Claims Analyzed Chilling Effects News

MediaDefender Claims AnalyzedPeter Ostrovski, October 7, 2007 Abstract: As against the hosts of stolen emails, MediaDefender's three statutory claims do not appear to be backed by the letter of the law or cases. Its claim of misappropriation of trade secrets would have some weight, if the information from the e-mails is found to contain trade secrets. Recently I described MediaDefender (MD)'s ">Uniform Trade Secret Act's definition of misappropriation, as applicable in this case, is "disclosure or use of a trade secret of another without express or implied consent by a person who ... at the time of disclosure or use knew or had reason to know that his knowledge of the trade secret was derived from or through a person who has utilized improper means to acquire it." Even if certain hosts can claim ignorance over a certain period of time, MediaDefender could put them on future notice with a cease and desist notice. For a place like MD-Defenders, which openly boasts about hosting this particular co

This month, I have two mixes for you - one for those who like to sit around at home stroking their chins and the other for those who like to stand around at raves looking hard. Since school is starting I figured more music could only be a good thing. The first mix blends soulful, dark and deep drum n bass/jungle before ending with some drumfunk. The second mix is a straight up rinse-out - jump-up and a bit of tech. Enjoy.

Also - I'm not on my normal PC. There is a bit of a background hum but it is only noticeable in breakdowns, hardly anything that takes away from the mixes.

A Privacy Agenda For The New Administration EFF: Breaking News

This is the first post in a three part series directed at restoring some of the civil liberties we've lost over the past eight years. Today's post is about our privacy rights. We'll follow this up early next week with our thoughts on intellectual property rights and government transparency. As new leaders prepare to move into the White House and Congress over the next few months, we'd like to call on them to restore Americans' privacy rights. Here's a little "wish list" we'd like to put forward: Repeal or repair the FISA Amendments Act (FISAAA). There are a great many flaws in FISAAA, which was passed last Spring after a long and difficult fight. Most significantly, the provisions granting retroactive immunity from litigation to telecommunications companies complicit in the Bush Administration's warrantless wiretapping program should be repealed so that the millions of Americans who have been illegally surveilled can have their day in court. Reform the Electronic

*Mars pioneers should stay there permanently, says Buzz Aldrin* http://www.physorg.com/news143972922.html *The first astronauts sent to Mars should be prepared to spend the rest of their lives there, in the same way that European pioneers headed to America knowing they would not return home, says moonwalker Buzz Aldrin. * In an interview with AFP, the second man to set foot on the Moon said the Red Planet offered far greater potential than Earth's satellite as a place for habitation. With what appears to be vast reserves of frozen water, Mars "is nearer terrestrial conditions, much better than the Moon and any other place," Aldrin, 78, said in a visit to Paris on Tuesday. "It is easier to subsist, to provide the support needed for people there than on the Moon." It took Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins eight days to go to the Moon -- 380,000 kilometres (238,000 miles) from Earth -- and return in July 1969, aboard Apollo 11. Going to Mars, thou

EFF Challenges Constitutionality of Telecom Immunity in Fede EFF.org Updates
Syndicated
San Francisco - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Thursday challenged the constitutionality of a law aimed at granting retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that participated in the president's illegal domestic wiretapping program. In a brief filed in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, EFF argues that the flawed FISA Amendments Act (FAA) violates the federal government's separation of powers as established in the Constitution and robs innocent telecom customers of their rights without due process of law. Signed into law earlier this year, the FAA allows for the dismissal of the lawsuits over the telecoms' participation in the warrantless surveillance program if the government secretly certifies to the court that either the surveillance did not occur, was legal, or was authorized by the president. Attorney General Michael Mukasey filed that classified certification with the court last month. "The immunity law puts the fox in charge of the hen house, letting the Attorney General dec

As you know I was invited to give a Google Talk at the Google Campus in Mountain View -- and in fact I did a 45 minute lecture performance on July 15. I decided to talk about "Context Hacking: Some Examples of How to Mess with Art, the Media System, Law and the Market" (a talk I already presented at ETech 2008 and various other cons) and it went really well. It got great feedback from attending folks.

Well, I waited for the talk to appear on Google's YouTube stream. And waited. And waited. People actually sent me emails and asked me if I faked the Google Talk. Faking a Google Talk? Oh my, no.

What could be taking them so long?

I asked a friend at Google and it seems a director in the Global Communications and Public Affairs office does not think the content of my talk is appropriate for uploading to YouTube. Quote: "Given the level of profanity, sexual content, and shocking images in it, I do not think it is appropriate for the Google Tech Talks channel on YouTube."

Oh wow.

Photo taken just after midnight on Friday by Jonathan Goldsbie. The "For Renovations" part of the sign has since been torn off. You know what's annoying? When the media overexposes a story while at the same time openly asking, "Is the media giving ____ too much coverage?" The Daily Show reams the cable news networks for that all the time. And yet, we have some sympathy. Maybe it's a cry for help. Maybe it's a way for the anchors to get something off their consciences in a way that won't get them fired. Certainly the Happy Seven incident has received way too much coverage. Or, more accurately, coverage that is far too prominent in their respective news outlets. It was the top story on the CityNews website for a day and a half. It led off their 6 p.m. newscast Wednesday and likely several ones subsequent to that. CBC Toronto had it as the top story on their site. The Star's site gave it second billing, behind the report on the cost of the war in Afghanistan. (Yes, we had it on top. Twice. Three
