Boys and Girls Club after-school program will open in Buena Vistaby Kirsten LaskeyMail Staff WriterChaffee County Boys and Girls Club will open Nov. 13 in Avery Parsons Elementary School in Buena Vista.It will be for elementary school-age children, although staff members hope to eventually include middle school and high school, club executive director Penny Wilken said.Programming will be focused on providing a healthy snack to club members and offering tutoring and help with homework, Andrew Miller, program director for the Buena Vista club, said.He said optional electives will be available such as art classes or fitness games.One thing the club won't be, Wilken said, is a cookie cutter version of the Salida club.The Buena Vista club will be tailored to the local community and local youths, Wilken said. The musical circuits have been buzzing with tricks and high-wire acts during the first workshop of the Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona. Over the last decade the Academy has hosted incredible collaborations between legendary music makers and up and coming producers in metropolises like Melbourne, New York, Sao Paulo and Cape Town. A Carnegie Institute of Washington team has developed a process that could lead to cheap, mass-produced, perfect diamonds of unlimited size, using chemical vapour deposition (CVD), where carbon atoms in a gas are deposited on a surface to produce diamond crystals. They got around the size limit by using microwaves to "cook" their diamonds in a hydrogen plasma at 2200 degrees C but at low pressure. It's no understatement when we say today's chefs are rock stars: They have avid fans, people who pay good, hard-earned money to see them in person; more and more are recognizable on the street; they have their own stalkarazzi (coughbloggerscough); and they even get swag when they attend or perform (cook) at big fancy events. We didn't see them, but we heard chefs who particpated in Los Angeles Magazine's From the Vine event last Sunday got a bag filled with goodies like eco-friendly bamboo salt and pepper grinders, fancy chefs knives, vinegars from Terra Sonoma, Julie Bristro jewelry, Acme Studio desk pens, and Alchemia vodka among other things. It got even sweeter in Vegas: The Michelin-starred chefs (and various, ahem, VIPs) who went to the poolside party a few weeks ago got iPod Nanos from the Wynn---uploaded, of course, with a "personal" video greeting from Michelin's Jean-Luc Naret. When they start to have James Beard gifting suites, we know it's getting out of hand.

By: Dennis Cook At the risk of damning this with faint praise, Moody Motorcyle (Suicide Squeeze) is a very nice album - breezy and touched by the sunny nonchalance of the Lovin' Spoonful and Happy Mondays, where light drum machines move acoustic guitars and sweet harmonies along. This ditty driven air kiss is the creation of singer-songwriter Jim Guthrie and Nick Thorburn of Islands, and while a small scale effort in many respects, it's slightness that charms. A lot. Song for song, Human Highway hold their own against the over-heralded New Pornographers, whose last release didn't manage anything as cool and catchy as Moody Motorcycle's "What World," "Sleep Talking" or bottled bubbly opener "The Sound," which is simplicity itself and all the better for it. And they manage to steal the silliness of a title like "Duties of a Lighthouse Keeper" by giving it genuine coastal melancholy. Like I said, nice album. JamBase | Two Lane Blacktop

Billed as Ryan Adams' backing band, what Cardinology (released October 28 on Lost Highway) reveals is a five-piece of overlapping pleasures and focused, no bullshit purpose, a rock 'n' roll band in the classic gatefold sleeve, hard touring model. The great comfort level of their stirring live performances has finally found some footing in the studio, and while perhaps not as instantly knock-you-back on your heels as Cold Roses or Jacksonville City Nights, there's a succinctness and clarity to Cardinology that distills their more rangy concert persona into one very fine rock album. Hi everyone!! Im back in town from my vacation and looking forward to some upcoming shows, but first, lets talk about my trip. I am from upstate New York in a little town called Spencerport. In a nutshell, the town was founded in 1804 when Daniel Spencer bought a farm about 1 miles north of Ogden Center. When the Erie Canal opened, the farm was sold to become the first village lots. As a port on the canal, the area was called Spencer's Basin and later changed to Spencerport. That is about it though it has one of the best used bookstores I have ever been to (this is where my addiction to comic books and sci-fi came from).
