The Broadway Tony Award-winner belts out the big roadway showstoppers and cool jazz standards Lillias White A Tribute to the music of Cy Coleman

"Lillias White is a singer who makes the most challenging vocal feats look almost easy." - New York Times

The term "living legend" is oft-overused, but occasionally its use is well and truly justified. Such is the case with Lillias White. Sydney Opera House is proud to host her first appearance on a Sydney stage since her sold-out 2005 tour, with three concerts only in The Playhouse.

"She can hold a note longer than Carmen McRae and sounds like a cross-pollination of Sara Vaughan and Dinah Washington" - Rex Reed

Lillias will be paying tribute to the great Cy Coleman, writer of hit musicals Sweet Charity, Barnum, Little Me and The Life, plus a pile of amazing jazz standards including Witchcraft.

After winning an Emmie, a Tony and an Obie on stage and TV (and our hearts on Sesame Street!) her powerful renditions of classic songs prove why she has

Smokin by name and Smokin by nature. The Crawdads can kick any crowd into party-mode with crazy capers, a good-time repertoire and high-octane guitar-smarts.

The Smokin Crawdads are different. Raw, fresh sounds with a new spin. A gig runs the gamut from Gutbucket Blues thru Culture-Shock-Country to Memphis-soaked swamp Rock and a ballad or two that could wring tears from the eye of a spud!

two guitars and drums; a swagger as they maraud through country, rock, surf and

funk like three jazz Vikings, pillaging what they like. This years Short Arse festival

performance will co inside with the release of the Sydney trios debut album 'You,

Deerhoof. They're sweet and playful yet muscular, with the kind of perfect pop

catchiness that's so hard to explain since it's a) comprehensively impossible to

sing along to, and b) actually incredibly complex music. The Alcohotlicks are

being lauded as ascendant, genre-transcendent renaissance renegades with no

eye for limitations and no reverence for the stringent conventions that keep

musicians and their creations in check.

While I have had this inspiration once in a while, its not a fluent talent. So my hats are off to you! The statistics were very interesting and I hope not conclusive of what is going on in the music industry right now, although I suspect they are indicative of it.

Sino-French oil giants to tap demostic oil reserve
Blog Entry
BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- China's largest oil and gas producer, China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), has reached a deal with Europe's largest oil refiner Total in jointly tapping the country's domestic oil reserve in a move to meet its surging demand for energy.

The Sino-French oil company alliance will work on the Sulige gas field, located in the Ordos Basin in northwest China, Liu Weijiang, said CNPC spokesman for overseas business, quoted by Saturday's China Daily.

Industry sources said the Sulige field has gas reserves of up to 602.6 billion cubic meters.

"It is only a set of framework agreements, and more follow-up projects are still under discussion," Liu said on Friday.

Dyann Woody Releases Debut Solo Album My Softer Side
Blog Entry
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nashville, TN--October 3, 2005--Who knew that this country singer was really a closet chanteuse? Dyann Woody makes a seamless transition from 'Yee Haw' to 'Ooh La La'. She not only has the voice of an angelic siren, but what will amaze you even more is just how easy and pleasing her music is to listen to. She reaches across many genres and meshes elements of '70's singer/songwriter style, jazz, blues and pop with the art of a well-crafted lyric.

Although this is Dyann's first solo album, she has shared musical success with her husband as part of the Country Music Group, The Woodys. Their debut album on Rounder Records went #1 on the Americana charts; they were voted the Top County Vocal Duo at the International Music News Awards and have received worldwide critical acclaim for all three of their albums. However, there was still a part of Dyann that was musically unfulfilled. She wanted to write songs that expressed all of the emotions and experiences that she and other women h

Chaos & flukes. Agreements. Law.

Sunnyvale, 2004-01-03, 8:30am or so

-----------------------------------

Agreements (or impositions) include international law, national law, notion of government, administrative regulations, business agreements, ..., relations between students and teachers... all the way to personal relations.

One of the desired features of a good agreement is its minimality. In particular this is true of the law. For instance, national law should not know the word "marriage". Marriage should be of no concern to law, and it is none of the government business. Law should care about children but should leave the issue of marriage alone.

\\\'Hail Zarthir!\\\'

As he sauntered down the steps that lead to the tallest and mightiest building in his country, his palace, while his people, young and old, cheered and clapped for him.

\\\'Hail Zarthir!\\\'

Like music to his ears, he smiled. He closed his eyes. He could feel the vibration of his people voices travelling towards his ears, their clapping and stamping of their foot. Like the beating of mighty drums that celebrates the birth of a new life. Everyone loves Zarthir.

This kingdom of his, his hard work, his child. He have put all his energy and power into it. Nothing can destroy it. With his own mighty hands and brain, he built it and preserved it and will not let it fall. His people will not betray him for they know the consequences. For he is the great Zarthir. Without him, all shall fall.

Customer Service

There's a bit of psychology involved when it comes to making customers happy. I had a fascinating phone call last week from a friend who's moving her office. Getting her telephone system up and running in the new location has become somewhat of a mind-boggling experience. As I listened to her account of the experience, I couldn't help but think back on Lily Tomlin's "Ernestine the telephone operator" character on Laugh-in. Remember that classic phrase, "We don't have to be nice, we're the phone company"?

Getting telephone service in this modern, computerized day and age should be as simple as making a phone call. Yet it seems the more technologically advanced we become, the more we slide backwards on the customer service scale. First, my friend was put through a "press-this-for-that" phone maze. Menus, sub-menus, even sub-sub menus. After pushing enough buttons to drive an elevator operator nuts, she got the dreaded, "All lines are busy... an attendant will be with you shortly" recording. Sister Fa is Senegal's Queen of hip-hop. But getting to the top wasn't an easy road - for a woman to break through in an almost exclusively male field within a male-dominated society, it was a long, hard journey. Struggle breeds compassion, and Sister Fa uses her international album debut "Sarabah - Tales from the Flipside of Paradise" to speak out against the injustices rampant in her native country. Warm, groovy and unmistakably African, her raps, in Wolof, Manding, Jola and French, roll elegantly over beats as well as traditional sounds (kora and djembe), delivering tracks far removed from rap clichs, and more influenced by 80s Old School hip-hop than current Western forms of hip-hop. From the very beginning of her career, Sister Fa has dedicated herself to fight the wide-spread practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in her country: "It's an operation that can kill - I've seen dead babies with my own eyes. We need to fight against this practice at all costs and get rid of it forever. But

Charley Patton and Various Artists The Definitive Charley Patton - 75 Year Anniversary Edition (Proper Records, 2009)

Considered as one of the fathers of the Mississippi Delta blues, Charley Patton was performing professionally and writing songs by the age of 19. Armed with a collection of country, Southern folk and pop tunes, as well as blues numbers, Patton worked the rounds of the party, juke joint and fish fry circuit before stepping in front of the mikes in 1929 to set down 14 tracks in wax for Paramount Records. While not the first blues musician to record, both Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Blake had recorded earlier, Patton found some success with his first Paramount recording, especially with the tunes “Pony Blues” and “Banty Rooster Blues.” He would go on to record three more sessions for Paramount and one last time for the American Recording Company in New York City in 1934.

In the process of recording and lively live performances, Patton becomes a powerfu

The coolest thing about their website (apart from the bands, the tour schedule, the videos) is that they feature adoptable pets from all over the country. We love record labels with a heart! Kanine brought us two bands to SXSW 2009 - Chairlift and Holy Hail, and have a killer roster of bands who are touring all over this summer. Kay Quartarino, General Manager, kindly told us about the label and some of the things they have coming up. So what is Kanine Records all about?

A collection of music nerds that love collecting records (vinyl), going to shows, having beers, hanging with friends and dogs, and enjoying life. We started Kanine because we love records, saw a ton of rad bands playing right in our own neighborhood, and wanted to show everyone what great talent was playing right in their own backyard. How was your experience at SXSW 2009?

What is technology exchange? Well technology exchange is something when data or technology is exchanged on a metric of measure of worth. For example if two environment such as species meet that are sentient and have something to offer there will often like in an environment like a back yard BBQ be small talk and chat. When you look at the sheer expanses of space something things in society are often overly complex in either party to ingest or study, and over view, that slight dusting of information is something that always reminds people that when you are someone mate there is no need to know as much as possible you are simply a friend and what is known is all that is inquired about or known to be spoken. Part of the importance of this for example is the way with the homosapien life for example domestic and industrial communication methods are often not written down, they are something that evolve.
