Dofus Classes
Blog Entry
There are 12 different classes. The choice of class determines which spells your character will receive, as well as how much characteristic upgrades will cost. The class names are inside jokes amongst the developers, often (but not always) referring in some way to the abilities of the class. For example, the Xelor class which uses time dofus kamas magic in combat, derives its name from Rolex, a watch manufacturer.Sadida's Boots (from "Adidas" backwards) - Nature-influenced direct damage and voodoo doll summoning. Sadida are a race of nature spirits, sleeping 23 hours a day. Eniripsa's Hands (Aspirine, the French spelling of "Aspirin") - Specialized in healing and invoking spells to increase the abilities of their allies. Eniripsa are winged fairies, females having semi-transparent butterfly wings, males have dragon-like wings. Iop's Heart (named for Yop yogurt drink, a developer in-joke) - Attack-based class with many powerful spells, however they have

Megaupload shut down by feds, seven charged, four arrested Ars Technica
Syndicated
The filesharing site Megaupload.com has been taken down by the FBI as the Justice Department unsealed an indictment charging seven people associated with the site. The 72-page indictment, handed down by a federal grand jury in Virginia on January 5, charges the seven people, including Megaupload's founders Kim Dotcom and Mathias Ortman, with conspiracy. Four of the people named—including Dotcom, Ortmann, Megaupload.com chief marketing officer Finn Batao, and developer Bram van der Kolk—are in custody, arrested in New Zealand today, according to the FBI. The FBI worked with authorities from New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, the UK and the Phillipines, and in concert with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement on the case. The indictment charges that the "Mega conspiracy" has for more than five years operated websites that willfully distributed pirated movies, often before their theatrical release, and other illegal copies of copyrighted works, earning the company over $17

Applications and Appliances: A Conversation with Jonathan Zi Freedom to Tinker
Syndicated
Professor Jonathan Zittrain is well-known for his concern that the general-purpose computer may be disappearing. The recent rise of app stores is putting his fears in a new light. After trading some thoughts about the issues in the blogosphere, he and I sat down at our respective keyboards for a conversation about the future of computing. This is a lightly edited version of our exchange. JG: I suppose the place to start is with your concern about “appliances”: single-purpose devices like the TiVo. What’s wrong with boxes that do one thing and do it well? JZ: Nothing’s inherently wrong with single-purpose devices. The worry comes when we lose the general-purpose devices formerly known as the PC and replace it with single-purpose devices and “curated” general-purpose devices. JG: In the last few years, the appliance has taken on a new face, thanks to downloadable apps. An appliance with an app store is no longer just a single-purpose device: it can do all kinds of thi

Old Timers: Boerum Hill's 90 Year-Old New St. Clair Diner in Eater
Syndicated
The future doesn't look bright for the New St. Clair Diner, a greasy spoon in Boerum Hill that opened in 1920 and was renovated in 2007. Earlier this week, mega-developer Joe Sitt of Thor Equities bought the diner's building for $5.4 million in a foreclosure auction and announced plans to develop the entire corner, one of the most heavily trafficked in yuppified Brooklyn, and the two bottom floors of the building into 6,000 square feet of retail space. He told the WSJ, "I'm a big believer in the transformation that's about to happen because of all of the new residents. It's a wonderful opportunity to buy the best corner in all of Brooklyn."

Workers at the restaurant told Eater they didn't know what was in store, but insiders report they probably have about three months before getting the boot from this "best corner." Says one disheartened resident, "The Greek diner is overpriced and kind of shitty, but it is THE destination in Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill for stressed out stroller-pushing parents in need

iOS 5.1 beta offers developers limited Siri integration Ars Technica
Syndicated
Apple released the first developer-only beta of iOS 5.1 to developers Monday night. While it includes a number of unidentified bug fixes, it also adds some APIs that let developers better integrate Siri's dictation input as well as offers a few clues to upcoming iOS devices. Full release notes for iOS 5.1 were published by BGR, though those notes usually do not detail bug fixes or security patches—that information is usually not detailed until public release. However, it is expected that the update will further address reported battery life problems that seem to particularly affect the iPhone 4S. Apple released an iOS 5.0.1 patch recently in an effort to address those issues, but users have reported that it doesn't fully address battery life problems. A source confirmed to Ars that a handful of the new iOS 5.1 APIs allow developers to specifically handle the response from Siri's speech-recognition servers. These APIs don't allow developers to integrate Siri support for controlling an app the way that

Thunderbolt coming to Windows PCs in 2012 from Acer and ASUS Ars Technica
Syndicated
Apple has so far been the only PC maker to support Intel's high-speed Thunderbolt interconnect, but Windows PC users will be able to get in on the fun soon enough: Acer and ASUS have announced that they will ship computers with Thunderbolt ports starting next year. Intel's Mooly Eden demonstrated a Windows-based PC transferring files at 700MBps from an Intel SSD during the company's Intel Developer Forum, according to IDG News. Both HP and Sony had claimed early support for the nascent standard, but HP later changed its mind and decided to stick to USB 3.0. Sony did end up using the tech in its updated Vaio Z ultraportable, but used a proprietary implementation that only works with a special GPU and Blu-ray equipped docking station. With no support outside Cupertino and few peripherals shipping, we wondered whether Thunderbolt would gain wider adoption. That's where Acer and ASUS come in. Both companies, which are working on new ultrabook models to ship next year, say they will ship PCs with Thunderbolt ne

Microsoft offers Azure cloud toolkit to build Windows 8 apps Ars Technica
Syndicated
Bolstering its plan to bring the Windows operating system and Windows Azure cloud service closer together, Microsoft has released a toolkit that helps developers use Azure to build applications optimized for the forthcoming Windows 8. The aptly named Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows 8 “is designed to make it easier for developers to create a Windows Metro style application that can harness the power of Windows Azure Compute and Storage,” Windows Azure technical evangelist Nick Harris writes. Windows 8 for desktops and tablets, now available in a developer preview, brings a markedly different user interface based on the Metro-style tiles also seen in Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 operating system. Microsoft is focusing heavily on integrating Azure, a cloud platform for building and hosting applications, with both Windows desktop and server software. At the BUILD conference this week, Microsoft demonstrated new features that let developers build applications in Windows Server and easily mov

Driver: San Francisco developer calls Ubisoft DRM "quite mor Ars Technica
Syndicated
Ubisoft has come under quite a bit of fire for its PC ports, including the recent delayed, DRM-laden version of From Dust. Driver: San Francisco, published by Ubisoft and developed by Ubisoft Reflections (formerly Reflections Interactive), was originally slated to carry the same always-on DRM, but has since been changed so that online verification is only required at launch. Even still, the developers behind the game believe that this type of DRM is a necessity for PC games. "You have to do something," Ubi Reflections founder Martin Edmonson told Eurogamer. "It's just, simply, PC piracy is at the most incredible rates. This game cost a huge amount of money to develop, and it has to be, quite rightly—quite morally correctly—protected. "If there was very little trouble with piracy then we wouldn't need it." Driver: San Francisco will also be the first game to utilize Ubisoft's Uplay Passport system, which gives players a registration code to access additional online content. Since the code is on
