Mekong river

Fireballs (moderator's note: date may be approximate)

As the full moon crests the horizon, ruby orbs of light begin to rise out of the Mekong River. As if by magic, they float silently into the air and then evaporate in the inky blackness, a phenomenon that awes and delights observers privileged to have seen them.

For centuries, their existence was a closely-held secret among villagers living near the area. Then, the miraculous event was discovered by outsiders who now flock to the riverbanks each October full moon night in enormous numbers.

The silence of the fireballs' ascent is emblematic of the mystery of their origins beneath the murky Mekong.

Balls of light are observable from time to time rising from the water's surface in the stretch of the river near Vientiane or Nong Khai. These are sometimes referred to as Naga fireballs. The locals attribute the phenomenon to Phaya Naga, Mekong Dragons.

False Aristocracy Presents 2nd Annual Art Show: "Possession"

A highly conceptual, multimedia and performance, installation heavy, group art show with reactionary pieces based on the film Possession [1981] by Andrzej Zulawski. The synopsis of the show alone is enough to confound any audience.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 2010 -- The second of what False Aristocracy hopes will become a famed succession of high concept group art show receptions is taking place on January 15th, at what some consider to an underground yet avant-garde venue in Bushwick, Brooklyn called House of Yes [HouseofYes.org]. The exhibition presents rarely displayed examples of "firsts" in electrified instruments. Of special note are numerous examples of iconic electric guitars showing a cornucopia of design ideas for electric pickups, volume and tone controls, bridges, tailpieces and tremolo arms, as well as instrument shapes and the incorporation of new materials. These electric and electro-acoustic guitars are displayed alongside other "firsts" including an electric zither, banjos, violins, basses, keyboards, and amplifiers, thus demonstrating how the new technology was applied to many instrument families. In addition, the exhibition shows the development of electric pickup technology as well as the techniques for gaining control over sound and tone through amplification, recording, and special effects such as tremolo, reverb, and echo. By exploring the intersection of technology and music through the invention and diffusion of electric guitar, the exhibition shows how the desire to crank up the volume ultimately led to the cre

Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV - Internationally recognized watercolor artist, David B. Goldstein, recently back from living in Hong Kong, reveals the largest collection of his artwork in one location. "Atmospheric Perspectives" is at the Washington Technology Park in Chantilly, Virginia from now until early April.

Of the forty-five paintings on display, some have been in juried exhibitions, some were on display in Asia, some are being shown for the first time and some are just favorites. What they all have in common is they attempt to capture the feeling of a place. The subjects for this exhibition span the globe, but focus on water related themes. They highlight Goldstein's passion to explore how our surroundings and nature can be merged through the medium of watercolor. "I'm particularly fascinated by water and how it reflects color and light. I love to discover connections and blend objects going beyond their natural outlines to form larger shapes," says David. "I strive to show the beauty of the world that I
