Arborescence RED abracadabra
Event
Thursday 24th April 2008

218 St-Paul West

interdisciplinary art show vernissage Nexus gallery proudly presents Annie Briard's arborescence RED in an Earth Day celebration. The public is invited to explore this eerie, fairytale-like interdisciplinary art experience and question our relationship to nature from April 22nd to May 15th at Nexus gallery in the Old Port, 218 St-Paul West. Meet the artist for drinks and tapas at the vernissage on April 24th from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Gaze through the peephole window of a miniature room, and see the story of a lonely girl and her love affair with a houseplant come to life in a vivid claymation video, or go mushroom picking in the gallery. Arborescence RED includes videos, paintings, readymades and fibre art in an exploration of our skewed relationship with nature, and a questioning of the irony behind the popular 'green' movement. The show turns the gallery into a bizarre fake garden, where the artworks, each a scene or story about nature, become strange and surreal fairytales with unnerving twists.

DANNY SILLADA: A FILIPINO RENAISSANCE MAN

"Danny Sillada is the embodiment of a Filipino who defies the existing trend. His multi-faceted attribute in the humanities, as a Renaissance man, is identical with those of well-rounded historical figures during the Renaissance period in Europe. Sillada is a visual artist recognized in the Philippine art scene for his paintings and installation artworks, a literary writer who is into prose and poetry, a philosopher, whose writings are akin with existentialism, a first-rate performance artist, and also an art-critic."

The critical approaches to art or theories in studying art works are surely a rational activity. But more than that, it develops a completely new dimension and a broader yet at the same time more concrete perspective on the artistic phenomenon under question. Theories explain the unity of the work of art among its diverse manifestations. They explain why works of art are admired by people who know little about the history of art, why they survive th

News Item
In his latest coffee-table book “THE LIVES AND LOVES OF ARTISTS AND MODELS”, Manuel “Manny” D. Duldulao pays tribute to the models whose identities are relatively unknown, and extols their vital role in the artists’ lives and creations. He travels back and forth in time and explores the attitude and concept of nude art, and the story behind the unflinching relationships between the artists and their muses.

Equally interesting is the historical accounts of nude models like a Greek farm girl named Phyrne (350 B.C.) to Sandro Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” (1484) during the Renaissance period, or Leonardo da Vinci's controversial “Mona Lisa” (1503) to Salvador Dali's complex relationships with Gala and their respective male lovers.

Jesse Jones has created a ghostly piece about the ideologies prevalent in Russia at the time Lenin was sending Lev on tour with the newly invented theremin.

Titled "The Specter and the Sphere" the 16mm film features Lydia Kavina filmed performing in theatrical venues.

The film and art exhibition are featured at the Project Arts Centre in Dublin May 16 - June 14.

It sounds like quite a vivid and creative exploration and uses not only theremin performance but a "whispering choir" and historical locations and artifacts.

Hope some of our TW members can check it out and let us know what it's like.

Since spring has finally arrived in Berlin (like, yesterday), the streets are teeming with life, and not just the cracked-out vampire kind that dominates the sidewalks during those sunless winter months. With the promise of multiple hours of daylight comes the heavy burden of mischief-time management for many of the city's urban art assassins — those who had the luxury of winter's endless darkness to do their bidding in relative safety. Not anymore. The days are going to get long — uncomfortably long, in fact. So what's a street artist to do? Hibernate until winter? Niemals (Never). Just find a corporate sponsor to fund your mural or a gallery to exhibit your work legally and call the rest of your external endeavors "exhibition promotion." Here's another look at Berlin's best graffiti ambassadors, and a sampling of galleries that have embraced urban art and its messiahs as the city's up-and-coming cultural creed. (Our previous coverage is here.) Alias has been collaborating a lot recently wit

Springtime in Paris, blah blah blah. Despite their proclivity for swing clubs, kinky saunas, and other libertine pleasures, it turns out the citizens of the supposedly most romantic city on earth aren't all born Romeos and sex kittens. But the impotent and love-starved are out there walking the Paris streets. And to rescue them, an underground society of entrepreneurial "seduction coaches" have started holding seminars for the sexually insecure, charging them beaucoup euros for methodical approaches to seducing women. Local evangelist of the American Mystery Method Sbastien Night addresses such French-specific dating concerns as: Do you tutoyer your desired prey or stick with the more forma

There are only three categories of purchasables that genuinely motivate me to shop: books, food, and yarn, in that order. Since independent bookstores have been done, and I don't want to bore you with my philosophical musings on Pathmark, deli counters, and self-checkouts, it looks like I'll be pointing you in the direction of fuzzy bunches of mohair and bamboo knitting needles. Hooray! In the past 10 years, yarn shops have gone the way of a lot of small New York businesses, transforming from mom-and-pop joints into upscale boutiquey venues with a painstakingly "curated" array of goods. The latter shops are fun for browsing, but when you calculate that your knitted sweater pattern will take upwards of $150 and 18 hours of labor to create, the whole do-it-yourself ethic loses it appeal. If balls of cashmere fibers don't get you going, perhaps the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project at the World Financial Center will. Pictured at left, the exhibit seeks to raise awareness about dwindling coral reefs, but at t

A wise man once sang Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, a warning simple enough for even me to grasp. This threat of long-term incarceration, a staple of justice and correctional systems for centuries, is still the essential deterrent to criminal behavior. Unfortunately in Berlin, with its twelve years of Nazi dictatorship followed by four more decades of communist authoritarianism, one might end up doing the time — or worse — while never having actually "done the crime." Politically and racially motivated confinement, torture, and murder stain the histories of Berlin's prisons, and the process of Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung ("coming to terms with the past") has also involved examining the injustices and atrocities which have occurred within the walls of the big house. While the city now has a normal correctional system for the punishment and rehabilitation of its criminal population, several of Berlin's prisons have been converted into memorials — remembering those innocents who su

Cocktails, art, and bars. It's like heaven, only without the harps. Started 10 years ago in Vienna, this is the first time the show comes to America. If you've got a bar-bot, this is your chance to show it off - it can deliver beer, mix drinks, or just hang out and hit on girls. We'd also like to see your art robots. Whether it hangs on a wall stands against one, this is really fun show and exhibit. The opening party is May 10th in SF, but your bots will get to stick around and be seen by gallery-goers.

They created many forms of street theatre and pranks. But even art hackers are often helpless against official "art in public space"! Oh, the horror! Those endless atrocities! All of them labeled "sculpture in public space"! Ah! Monstrous "public art installations" on roundabouts, on main streets, in shopping malls! It is time to reclaim the street art!
