Escape From Chaos tempest
Event
Sunday 28th June 2009

Glitch, 318 St Georges Road, Melbourne

Escape From Chaos featuring Ollie Olsen & Hesius Dome Ollie Olse, Hesius Dome, Garagee, Stickleback, Red Eye Express, Sunsaria There are few musicians deserving of the title 'legendary' and even fewer who have managed to combine innovation, with mainstream recognition.

Ollie Olsen is one of those rare beings who has been a genre shaping trailblazer, and has also managed to pop up on the mainstream radar.

Many of Olsen's projects have been so far ahead of their time it almost begs belief. His apocalyptic performance with No on Countdown in the 80's has not been forgotten by anyone who witnessed it, pre empting the dance punk hybrid of artists like Nine Inch Nails by many years. His collaborative work with Michael Hutchence (RIP) of INXS on the Max Q album is still regarded by music critics as being pretty much the ultimate synthesis of creative and commercial aspirations. And then he co founded the Psy-Harmonics label which became a global phenomenon, mainly on the back of his many production aliases.

This is true in everything that the mainstream forces us to see, and to hear. Every so often, an individual or an organisation steps forward and rises to make us challenge the perceptions we have of the world around us. Daniel Carcur Arrendondo, a musician of Chilean origin, playing his trade in the world of electronica as a sound engineer, psy-trance DJ and producer and, label manager with Antu Records is one such individual. In 2004 Daniel launched his own project 'ITAL', which in African patois dialect symbolises 'purity', and acts as the moniker under which he promotes himself and his music in the music scenes of America and Europe. Electron - NuanceRelease 2009

Electron is the solo studio project of Paul Handley,

Adelaide based songwriter and keyboard player who currently plays

in The What 4 and electronic duo Beltane. Electron stems back

as far as the mid 90's, writing sound-scapes for student

dance theatre, experimental theatre and independent short films. The

first official CD 'Atmospherics' released in 2006 was written while

travelling through Japan and Europe, and recorded in Prague. This

release utilised ambiences recorded in the 'field' of which, train

stations and downtown city centres were of particular interest.

The forthcoming CD retains the ambient focus inherent

within the music of Electron but utilises more complex drum and

percussion rhythms with a tonal quality that often provides a melodic

backing to subtle undulating waves of synthetic textures.

Experimental music it's something you seldom encounter in mainstream music; that is, of course, unless it's N.E.R.D.. It has been five years since the release of their last album, Fly Or Die, but Pharrell, Chad and Shae have brought back their original sounds with the synesthesia inspired title Seeing Sounds. In case you are wondering what synesthesia is well, just wiki it. 2008 LP Say It Straight

Reviewed by Dobbie Glasson

Experimental rock band The What 4 has delivered their debut full-length album Say It Straight. With such diverse sounds on the one release, it's no wonder they have been busy playing and getting some air time on Three D Radio. The What 4 are Jo Herbert on guitar and vocals, Frank Usmiani on bass, Wil Martin on drums and Paul Handley on synthesizers. Say It Straight is full of mind blowing sounds and effects, coming together nicely to produce a very stable record.

Rolling bass starts 'Science Fiction' which kicks the album into gear, and already it's into blazing synth and a guitar lick that tops this song off nicely. In 'Highbrow' the build up is worth the wait for the swelling, throbbing heart of the song. It's here you get the first taste of Herbert's womanly vocals and they are matured and somewhat sultry.

'D Construct' and 'Robotic Chaotic' give off a huge wall of sound; a surreal canvas of music filled wi

Deriving influence from the likes of Killing Joke, Primus, The Necks, Front Line Assembly, Sonic Youth and Mars Volta, The What 4 are Adelaide's freshest experimental rock outfit to explode onto our local music scene. Having recently released their debut album, Say It Straight, Paul Handley, the band's synthesiser operator, invites Rip It Up into their world of instrumental and novel quirky sound and dynamic musical scope while pondering the concept of cover bands

"If you're a cover band, you might get some nice well paid shows at the Hyatt or whatever, but you can't sell CDs because it's not your music!" he begins. "We might play a few daggy pubs and stuff but there's a chance that people will get familiar with our music then and they can buy [it] we've always concentrated on playing originals, we're not big on cover bands and stuff!"

And original they are. Paul along with Jo, Will and Frank have some fairly specific and strategic notions for The What 4's overall effect.

Zen Paradox started back in 1991 as a solo outlet for Steve Law's more techno-oriented works, and he shaped up as one of Melbourne's principle live acts, playing at big warehouse rave parties like Every Picture Tells A Story, Hardware and Omniglobe, as well as more experimental smaller gigs and some TOTEM parties in Sydney.

Corrosive Artifacts is Zen Paradox's first release on Sydney Netlabel Elektrax Recordings, after having previously released tracks on Nova Zembla, Psy-Harmonics, IF? and Solitary Sound.

These tracks are Steve's more up-tempo, mad acid compositions, dating from the 1990s - and still essential, timely tracks.

Zen Paradox: Corrosive Artifacts EP

1) Sora (feat. Sayaka Kushibiki)

2) Acidic Afterburn

3) Darkwater Denizen

Trapez Ltd. * trapezltdcd1 * Mihalis Safras * Cry For The La Humpty Records New Releases

Just a year ago a new name appeared on the international techno landscape. An artist who has a vivid past, lived the live of rocknroll for almost 10 years, playing all the clubs in Greece and who was voted one of the best DJs in Greece... stopped from one day to the other to quit with his past and to beginn with "something" new. His name was Mihalis Safras. He soon began buying equipment and learned quickly to produce a a "fett" powerful electronic sound. But other than that it is his personality that struck Riley Reinhold which led to a signing of up to now five 12+#8243;s on Trapez limited. Mihalis Safras is also called the "octopus". There is no other man in techno business who can communicate with so many people, talk about so many different topics and still manage at the end of the day to come up with superb tracks. Sure some people will say there is too much Mihalis Safras around referring to his remixes for BPitch, Great Stuff etc... but the man has a heart as big as Mykonos and the speed of Pegasus.

Moon Harbour * mhr0436 * Seuil * Musm * Tech-House * 2009-05 Humpty Records New Releases

Alexis Benard a.k.a Seuil can't be stopped at the moment, releasing six EPs in the last year alone and amongst them being his stunning debut Double Room on Moon Harbour. This time around Seuil dishes up another three top-notch house tracks for us. It all starts with Musm, a driving track with a sharply accented rhythm, underlined by a catchy vocal sample. Around the middle of the track the arising fanfare/trumpet horn shows off Seuil's feel for the dancefloor. When the peak arrives it is a carefully crafted and subtle one, holding the listener till the end. Unexpected Night is a builder, starting relaxed, but during the breakdown a half dissonant, half driving sound emerges giving the track an excellent and unforgettable new dynamic. Ohohah is a touch more experimental. Bourn on an elegant bassline, the style shows a friskier side to Seuil, while still capturing his catchy, deep and funky style. http://www.humpty.de?id=47&aid=22269&lang=en
