PUBLISHER: Atlas Publishing Co., Inc., Philippines

On page 233 of the book "Survival", under a section "What other nations say about Philippines", a Hong Kong expat named Frank Cancelloni related his first impression of Filipinos as "domestic helpers or singers abroad". He even had a part-time "Filipina maid" who came to his apartment few times a week.

One day, he went home early and he was surprised to see his "Filipina maid" sitting on his desk flipping through his books from school.

"What are you doing with those books?" asked Frank in a cynical manner.

"I used to be a professor in mathematics and physics at the University of the Philippines before I came to Hong Kong", said the "Filipina maid" in a nonchalant manner.

"But why a "domestic helper" in Hong Kong?" asked Fra

Week in Reviews: Jack Falstaff Upgraded to a Tres Eater SF

Baueriffic goes PlumpJacking again this week, and the man likes what he sees from Jonny Leiva at Jack Falstaff. The review is a short update, but it's a solid rave, asserting Jack Falstaff's status as a mature restaurant in its own right:The food [Leiva] has created at this PlumpJack sister property is some of the best I've had in some time. The flavors are clean, the concept is clear, the execution is nearly flawless, and the combinations are intriguing. ... I was equally impressed with a pasta ($12/$21). The handmade egg fettuccine draped over the fork like a satin ribbon, flavored with a ragout of oxtail meat, precise dices of still crunchy carrots and whole nearly raw peas and shavings of Parmesan. The contrast between delicate pasta, meaty sauce, sweet peas and nutty cheese was remarkable.Sprinkling in happy buzzwords like "brilliant," Bauer boosts up Leiva to three stars, along with a plea to a dining public that has yet to take notice: "On both visits the dining room was only half full. Given the atmo

A couple months ago we heard that Atlanta rap mogul and midget Jermaine Dupri was starting a record label financed by Procter & Gamble and the sickly TAG body spray as a way to more effectively spread TAG body spray to the urban masses. For a moment it looked like right wing racism might have the unexpected benefit of scuttling the project, but alas. Now it's even worse: Every brand wants to make their own records. But hey, they just want the artist dudes to "have fun, as though they were doing any song" (about Converse, the shoe of grave-robbing image pimps): A brief list of companies that are now buying your favorite (or not) artists and paying them a bunch of money to make "fun" songs: P&G, Red Bull, Nike, Converse, Bacardi, and Unilever. Plenty of good artistic raw material in there, at least. And the brands involved have exhibited a keen cultural sensitivity about their work: "We don't just want to talk to people," said Anne Jensen, a brand-building director at Unilever who works with Caress. "We want t

Hills Star's Awful Fashion Award [Fashions] Gawker

Janice Min will come to regret this: Her Us Weekly has named Lauren Conrad "Celebrity Designer Of The Year" as part of a special section called "Us Hot Hollywood Style Winners." (Click the picture at left for a full-sized image, courtesy Bryanboy.) Wow. Well, that's, uh, bold. Because the critics have not been kind to the Hills star's work. New York called her Lauren Conrad Collection "tragique." When Bryanboy saw the Us spread, Marc Jacobs' favorite gay Filipino fashion blogger barfed. Well, haters, Us wrote that Conrad has "won... a wide array of fans," so there. Their source? Oh, that would be Conrad herself, repeating something someone else told her: "I was just with a stylist who said she has dressed a couple of celebrities in my pieces," Conrad said. Examples? None are given, or pictured with the piece. But, hey, there is a photo caption with this quote: "She did a great job!" proud pal Audrina Patridge tells Us of Conrad's March runway show. [Bryanboy]
