The Justin Walshe Folk Machine play folk for folks who don't like folk. They're an energised folk-country extravaganza based in Fremantle who've developed a lust for touring in the lead up to releasing their forthcoming sophomore album "Walking to China" this Winter.

They released the first single "Pockets Full of Gold" nationally last October earning Drum Media Single of the Week and plenty of airplay all over the country as they met hoards of new enthusiastic fans on their national November tour. Their live show didn't fail to impress on either side of the country with the raucous rambling raconteur t

Skipping Girl Vinegar 'One Long Week' Single Tour heapsacj
Event
Thursday 18th March 2010

East Brunswick Club Hotel, 280 Lygon St., Brunswick East

Broke, worn out and exhausted, Skipping Girl Vinegar crawled into the studio with their hobos in tow in the week before Christmas 09 to record their new single 'One Long Week', the first release from what will be part of their follow-up sophomore album. Working with Melbourne indie producer Nick Huggins (Kid Sam, Seagull, Whitley) and Greg Arnold, the band have ventured into new territories whilst retaining their organic hobo pop aesthetic, uncovering a dark and overwhelming melodic classic.

Mixed in January 2010 in Nashville by American indie legend Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Bob Evans), who mixed SGV's debut album, the new single 'One Long Week' uncovers the whirlwind of the previous year of endless independent touring and the release of their acclaimed debut album 'Sift The Noise'.

After returning from Nashville in February 09, SGV hit the road running and found themselves stumbling into a shopping centre overwhelmed by the presence of a giant polyurethane reindeer that hailed the arrival of December,

Event
Thursday 8th April 2010

Oxford Art Factory, 42 Oxford St, Darlinghurst

Fresh from recording their incredible new album with International Producer Nick Didia, Katie Noonan and her new band The Captains are very excited to get out on the road behind their epic first single 'Page One'.

'Page One' is a rockin' song co-written between Katie and her Captain's guitarist Cameron Deyell and legendary Oz songsmith Don Walker (of Cold Chisel fame) - a song that Katie wrote as a wedding gift to fellow Captain's keyboardist Stu Hunter and his partner.

Over the last two years Katie and 'The Captains' (Cameron Deyell - guitar, Stu Hunter - keys/bass, Declan Kelly - drums) have been slowly building a vessel of exciting new songs.

The release sees Kate return to her beloved lush, organic band sound and strong and inspiring personal stores.

Katie has written about half the album on her own and then co-written the other half with a host of Anzac luminaries including Tim Finn, Don Walker, Sia Furler, Josh Pyke, Tom Shapcott and her fellow 'Captains' band mates.

Lnasa, Irelands new all-star quintet, steers Irish acoustic music into surprising new territory with inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves. With its distinctive use of the upright acoustic bass, teamed with percussive guitar, melodic interweaving of wind and string instruments, pairing flutes, fiddle, whistle and pipes Lnasa achieves breathtaking arrangements. The result is a sound that, though distinctly Irish in flavor touches on jazz and other improvisational music forms.

Irish fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes and American master guitarist Dennis Cahill have garnered international renown for taking traditional Irish music to the edge of the genre with slow-building, fiery performances while incorporating sensibilities from the worlds of blues and jazz. Hayes has taken home a National Entertainment Award (the Irish equivalent to the Grammy) and in 1999, was named Folk instrumentalist of the Year by the BBC Radio Awards. While Martin pursues a melody, Dennis explores the harmony and rhythm within the

YEAH SPARROW + MOONTHIEF + COPPERS FOR KARMA + RESIGNED YEAH SPARROW Not quite as American as americana, not quite as polite as traditional folk, Yeah Sparrow is evolving as the potential missing link between the current proliferation of US influenced singer-songwriters and the future of contemporary folk music on this side of the Atlantic. With regular appearances at top alternative London venues such as the Windmill and the Ritzy over the past year, as well as appearing on two stages at the Latitude festival, Yeah Sparrow are touring the UK in the coming year with a mixture of intimate solo shows from frontman Kevin Hadley, and full band performances that look set to be as playful and impassioned as their lyrics suggest. Think of a mongrel mix of Tom Waits, Elliot Smith and Broken Social Scene, with a falsetto vocal not unlike Thom Yorke, and you re somewhere close. MOONTHIEF COPPERS FOR KARMA are billed as A hot mouthful of upbeat driving funkbilly, and The London threesome you most want to be part of

PIPES + COLOURS + HONEYTRAP PIPES COLOURS HONEYTRAP first cast adrift on the murky waters of the Midlands some time in the mid twenty-hundreds. It wasn t long, however, before her brightly coloured sails were spotted as far away as New York, Norway and Japan. Over the course of their travels, the crew acquired a curious cargo of sounds, varying from klezmer to country to garage punk. They gained the admiration of many, including Duke Bowie, and the patronage of the mighty Tough Love Records Trading Company. A school of glittering releases began leaping in their wake, including the EP Let s Do Naked Dancing and the album Follies in Great Cities . Now, with a fresh coat of paint, suitably inflated sails and undoubtedly the sharpest crew to have ever manned the greasy decks, Honeytrap is sailing the crest of a wave on her continuing quest to bring riotously demented indie-folk to your fun-starved shores.

CINNAMON ANTICS + KARMA JUNKIE + FAKE TEAK + CAPULETS Through stitching together genres like British-electro, a dash of new-wave and power-pop, CINNAMON ANTICS are managing to strike a stark contrast with the scene. Stirring in melodies with a splash of synth, Shabsi, Drew and Hugh turn electro human. Uniquely teamed with four eccentric dancers The Teacups, so far 2009 has seen Cinnamon Antics play at the Roundhouse alongside Noisettes, Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobious Pip and Kano, and play a mini-tour in Paris; as well as now being able to include Tommy Sparks and The Chapman Family amongst their ever-growing legion of obsessive fans. KARMA JUNKIE: This is experimental, lyric-driven electro-folk. A sonorous conversation between guitar, violin and voice. Harp, Synth and live sampling filter hooks, loops and mesmeric pop sensibility. This duo: Nurtured by Wales intrinsic oral tradition of storytelling, ancient poetry and decadent, passionate rock. Bethany & Rufus Roots Quartet "Live A Fip" CD Debuts In Euro MusicDish
News Item
New World/Folk/Roots duo Bethany & Rufus along with Fulani flutist Yacouba Moumouni and Afro Haitian drummer 'Bonga' Jean-Baptiste will release a new CD, entitled "Live A Fip" on October 22, 2009. The Bethany & Rufus Roots Quartet "Live A Fip" CD features 12 tracks, and will debut in Europe on the Daqui Records label.

The "Live A Fip" CD release was a natural extension of Bethany & Rufus' collaborations with Jean-Baptiste and Moumouni. Bethany & Rufus, who share the same label with Moumouni, also shared the stage with him for one song during the 10th anniversary celebration of Daqui Records. They knew instantly that their political beliefs and musical chemistry would bond them together, catapulting them forward with continued performances. The trio became a quartet when 'Bonga' Jean-Baptiste was invited to perform with them the following summer at Les Nuits Atypique. During a promotional radio spot for the festival on Radio France in March 2009, the quartet was asked to perform live on the Live A Fip radio

Abaji - Origine Orients (2009) Music Emissions Alternative Music Reviews

Abaji is at home in the many sounds of the Middle East and South Asia. "Origine Orients" is almost a survey of the deepest soul of several styles from those regions. Whether on bouzouki, sitar, oud or guitar, Abaji provides a constant and comforting dexterity that underlies most of the tunes while not taking away from their emotional impact. This is intimate, celebratory music defintely designed to be listened to in the company of loved ones.Whether it is the prayerful mourning and slurred percussion of "Desert to Desert," the haunting, solo bouduk basse of "Hidden Soul," or the oddly Cohen-esque dark acoustic folk of "Min Touwwa," Abaji seems at ease in his musical skin. Even on "Rayehh," a slow building cabaret tune, or "Mecaralavenis," song of grizzled hard won joy that might be at home on a Tom Waits record, Abaji wields both instrument and voice with confidence and generousity. Five languages and a few homemade instruments also help make "Origine Orients" an exercise in inclusion. Abaji claims to have ov

Out like Lambs’ self titled debut EP struts a studied orchestrated folk sound. As an opener Bygones showcases Rachel Ades vocal style, which arrives fully born without the pains of early delivery. The songs are wide and sparse, shedding vast influences, hymnal gospel, free jazz, Americana folk roots and an orchestral knowledge that structures the setting. When Bred to Bug breaks out into an improvised trumpet moment the disparity is distinct and yet not overly inharmonious. This is where the free noise jazz police would step in and laugh my ignorance pointing to the structureless structure and the point that they have been trying to make for so long it is interminable, to those in love with form and systems. Even when they may seem quaint. Regardless of such notes the guitar of Michael Lucio Stenbach displays a keen talent for the ears. They open sonic vistas that display the common themes of this folk form of expression to power and reverence for the hopes and dreams of individuals. There is a pl
