Meat Katie, one of Australia's favourite imports is currently preparing to bring his blend of tech-funk to the land down under. Always a crowd favourite, the man other wise known as Mark Pember will be doing shows across Australia in August. His DJ show will take us on a journey into the deep and dirty underbelly of techno, breaks and tech-inspired house. Dubstep is in, people. On the back of universal plaudits showered upon Burials exploration of the genre in Untrue, its influence has become substantially more noticeable. Although Danish artist Jens Berents Christiansen " better known as Rumpistol " has been creating music for the majority of this millennium, an excavation of dubstep is undertaken in the ambient minimalism of his impressive third record, Dynamo, his first since 2005’s Mere Rum, released through his own label Rump Recordings. What makes a record like Dynamo such a beguiling listen is that it refuses to narrow its focus. Sure, dubstep is an overt touchstone, particularly on tracks like Analog and the pogo-bounce of opener Transit, but Rumpistols musical palette consists of so many more colours. Take Analog for instance: ambient electronica and even reggae are subtly incorporated into eroded, androgenous vocals and skittering shards of rhythm. On the small stage, McTuff lays down a blistering hard groove met - both literally and figuratively - at the altar by traditional jazz and blues melodies and set free by funk's irreverent attitude. Many of the 150 guests are dancing; furthest from the band and monitors couples locked in an embrace gracefully pivot and spin like Disney's teacup ride while younger attendees have gathered closer to the front to form a loose semi-circle and giddily let their backbones slip. Working rock 'n' roll bands are the salt of the earth. It's the largely unknown folks that stuff themselves and their battered gear into near-death vans and wobbly trailers to run with the sputtering torch lit by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and the other snot-nosed pioneers in what became rock. These bands might not be on TV or cutting sponsorship deals with energy drinks but you can be damn sure Buddy Holly, Joey Ramone and Ronnie Lane are looking down on them with ear-to-ear grins. It ain't a pretty or secure life but for the ones that kneel at this roughshod church it's the only life.
