So much so, that you're left wondering why he hasn't released a solo band record since the '90s. "The Straight Path" is the new album by his outfit, Klondike's North 40, and it manages to recall the Radio Birdman and Hitmen guitarist's long list of musical reference points. Undeniably rocking and embellished to the hilt with loud guitars, "The Straight Path" is served up with a generous dollop of unabashed melodic pop. Echoes of Detroit rock, soul and Flamin' Groovies powerpop mix it with an Eastern raga and Turtles-style backing vocals. Say It Straight is full of mind blowing sounds and effects, coming together nicely to produce a very stable record. The lyrics are all original yet feel immediately familiar that explore love, loss and the lure of the road, lived-in, knowing. And the melodies expertly performed by a first-rate band carry the easy groove This is the story of music artist Ruby James who unveiled her CD, "Desert Rose," on April 21st at the Traubadour Los Angeles. Desert Rose is produced by John Avila of Oingo Boingo who was drawn to Ruby James' sultry voice powerful talent and recorded the album with her in his Los Angeles studio. James elegantly fuses rock and Americana with lyrics that explore love, loss and the lure of the road. "Ruby James' rugged sensuality, which bravely masks a wearied vulnerability, is pure sonic empowerment. | | MusicDish | News Item | by Mark Kirby, Whatever one could say about Hills Rolling, the moniker of one-man band Trey McGriff, you can't accuse him of having shallow roots. On his myspace page he lists as influences about one hundred or so bands and musicians. There are old schoolers (Otis Redding, The Beatles, Pink Floyd), new schoolers ( The Killers, My Morning Jacket), tweeners (Nirvana, Dinosaur, Jr.) electro types (The Cure, Depeche Mode) and eclecticians like him (Beastie Boys, Beck). No doubt this is in part a smart-ass commentary on the "what are your influences" question. It is also a list of people he has most likely listened to and is another way of saying that all the music he has heard, or for that matter, everything he has been through, is recorded by the brain, swished around by time, and reflected in his songs. Loves, hates, sounds, tastes, it's all in your head. Musically and lyrically, this message comes through loud and clear on his CD Sweet Tea. 'Jimmy Recard' is the magnetic first single from 'Brothers Grimm', the 3rd album from acclaimed West Australian MC Drapht. If a name is the first thing we inherit upon entering this world, it must surely play a critical role in the determination of who we become. In 'Jimmy Recard' Drapht reflects on what could have been had he not been christened "plain old, boring old Paul". A brilliantly catchy and tongue-in-cheek party-starter, Jimmy Recard is the story of the "king of the castle" and the "king of the bar-stool" - a man with the world at his feet. | | MusicDish | News Item | . by Mark Kirby, Whether you call it praise music or New Jack gospel, this genre is most often a classic case of "preaching to the choir," with song lyrics lifted artlessly from the King James bible and histrionic music calculated to "reach out and touch somebody's hand." Dear god. Luckily, Charles Laster II and Silvia Pratesi don't make this mistake on their new record Journey of Life. Their songs reference salvation, heaven, and living the Christian life but, like secular soul music, have an uplifting universality. Those of us who aren't Christian - agnostics, Muslims, those whose spirituality can't be pigeonholed - can still understand the positive spirituality that is the wellspring of Laster and Pratesi's music, and still get our groove on. Laster, who composed the excellent lyrics, and Pratesi, who created most of! the music with a seamless combination of live musicians and samples, remind us how gospel and rhythm and blues gave birth to soul music in the early sixties and how a new kind of s soul gospel christian pop music releases and reviews Read More... |
| | JM | News Item | I was excited to listen to another Aussie R&B singer doing well... until I heard her album.Felicia Alima's album Know Me, features mostly boring music coupled with a vocal style that sounds like a direct rip off of Ciara. It is very hard to take this album seriously. In fact, her opening song Know Me starts exactly the same way lyrically as Ciara’s massive single “, 2, Step. I wouldn’t say the album is completely awful. I mean, I did find one track that I dug. The fourth track on the album I’m Down is an acoustic guitar inspired bouncy club-friendly joint featuring rapper Phoenix. Unfortunately, two tracks later she rips off Prince’s classic When Doves Cry for the flow of the song. For the rest of this review check out: http://www.planeturban.com.au/album_reviews/album_felicia_alima_know_me Read More... |
