Esplanade Hotel, 11 Upper Esplanade St, St, Kilda, 3182

Album Launch for Radio Birdman Guitarist Chris Masuak's band Klondike's North 40 Klondike's North 40, Digger & The Pussycats, Midnight Woolf, The Hutt River Solution Chris "Klondike" Masuak's musical history reads like a muscle car ride through the mean streets of Australia's rock and roll underground. So much so, that you're left wondering why he hasn't released a solo band record since the '90s.

"The Straight Path" is the new album by his outfit, Klondike's North 40, and it manages to recall the Radio Birdman and Hitmen guitarist's long list of musical reference points.

Undeniably rocking and embellished to the hilt with loud guitars, "The Straight Path" is served up with a generous dollop of unabashed melodic pop.

Echoes of Detroit rock, soul and Flamin' Groovies powerpop mix it with an Eastern raga and Turtles-style backing vocals.

Live, Klondike's North 40 are Masuak on guitar and vocals, Red Porter (Juke Savages) on bass, Gerard Presland (Hitmen DTK) on drums and Matt Sulman on vocals.

Starting a band...

Hey,

I'm a 21 year old female from the North Eastern suburbs. I don't have any band experience yet but I do have some performance experience with my singing school. I prefer to do vocals though I can do some basic drums and a few chords on the acoustic guitar. I also write lyrics.

Open genre - a result of different players musical preferences and styles combining as one to form a unique sound.

Must have own transport, basic equipment and if you have a practice space that's a plus but not necessary.

Must be musically open-minded.

Mixed, but mostly originals. My influences: silverchair, my chemical romance, the butterfly effect, evanescence...

At the moment I am looking for a drummer, bassist and guitarist. Contact me if you are interested.

The What 4

2008 LP Say It Straight

Reviewed by Dobbie Glasson

24 July 2008

Experimental rock band The What 4 has delivered their debut full-length album Say It Straight. With such diverse sounds on the one release, it's no wonder they have been busy playing and getting some air time on Three D Radio. The What 4 are Jo Herbert on guitar and vocals, Frank Usmiani on bass, Wil Martin on drums and Paul Handley on synthesizers. Say It Straight is full of mind blowing sounds and effects, coming together nicely to produce a very stable record.

Rolling bass starts 'Science Fiction' which kicks the album into gear, and already it's into blazing synth and a guitar lick that tops this song off nicely. In 'Highbrow' the build up is worth the wait for the swelling, throbbing heart of the song. It's here you get the first taste of Herbert's womanly vocals and they are matured and somewhat sultry.

'D Construct' and 'Robotic Chaotic' give off a huge wall of sound; a surreal canvas of music filled wi

Once in a great while, you put on a CD by an artist you've never heard of before and time stops. The voice is new, yet timeless. The lyrics are all original yet feel immediately familiar that explore love, loss and the lure of the road, lived-in, knowing. And the melodies expertly performed by a first-rate band carry the easy groove

This is the story of music artist Ruby James who unveiled her CD, "Desert Rose," on April 21st at the Traubadour Los Angeles. Desert Rose is produced by John Avila of Oingo Boingo who was drawn to Ruby James' sultry voice powerful talent and recorded the album with her in his Los Angeles studio. James elegantly fuses rock and Americana with lyrics that explore love, loss and the lure of the road.

"Ruby James' rugged sensuality, which bravely masks a wearied vulnerability, is pure sonic empowerment. With "Desert Rose," Ruby lays bare, in the grand tradition of guitar-slinging blues hitchhikers, her power to wield her own whiskey-soaked chalice and the blade to match," wr

No one guessed that the piano, harp and other sounds came from a drum - but that's what the folks at Synesthesia (http://www.synesthesiacorp.com), the company behind the stealth What's That Sound? online contest, expected. "Synthesizer" was as close as anyone got, and Megan Hardman of Deer Creek, Oklahoma is the lucky winner among those who answered correctly.

A self-taught pianist, Megan now gets to experiment with drums and dozens of other instruments with her new Mandala. She loves any kind of music - classical, rock, country, Christian - and says the Mandala 2.0 "sounds like a lot of fun." The only other thing she's ever won was a 4-foot Snoopy - back when she was just three feet tall. Megan and her mom used to raise Chihuahuas, but she says the business was doomed - they kept more than they sold because the dogs were just too cute to let go. A disability keeps her from work, but she's looking forward to experimenting with her new Mandala.

"We're thrilled to award the Mandala 2.0 to Megan," said Vin

by Mark Kirby,

Whatever one could say about Hills Rolling, the moniker of one-man band Trey McGriff, you can't accuse him of having shallow roots. On his myspace page he lists as influences about one hundred or so bands and musicians. There are old schoolers (Otis Redding, The Beatles, Pink Floyd), new schoolers ( The Killers, My Morning Jacket), tweeners (Nirvana, Dinosaur, Jr.) electro types (The Cure, Depeche Mode) and eclecticians like him (Beastie Boys, Beck). No doubt this is in part a smart-ass commentary on the "what are your influences" question. It is also a list of people he has most likely listened to and is another way of saying that all the music he has heard, or for that matter, everything he has been through, is recorded by the brain, swished around by time, and reflected in his songs. Loves, hates, sounds, tastes, it's all in your head. Musically and lyrically, this message comes through loud and clear on his CD Sweet Tea.

With all this in his musical blender, he has come up with

Peter Bloom is a singer-songwriter who learned all the right lessons from John, George, Ringo and especially Paul - not to mention Elton John and John (Five For Fighting) Ondrasik. This is simply gorgeous piano/orchestral-based pop, carried to the next level by Bloom's insightful lyrics and full-bodied melodic sensibilities.

"Let It Go" is a knockout opener, a mid-tempo plea for resolution whose jangly guitar, thrumming organ and keening string accents help Bloom build to a soaring, affecting climax that sums up everything a good ballad should be.

The orchestral flourishes that open and color the fringes of "Walls" could have been lifted from Revolver, but weren't; these are original confections using familiar music

In 'Jimmy Recard' Drapht reflects on what could have been had he not been christened "plain old, boring old Paul". A brilliantly catchy and tongue-in-cheek party-starter, Jimmy Recard is the story of the "king of the castle" and the "king of the bar-stool" - a man with the world at his feet. With Drapht's unique voice and funky, hypnotic flow layered over a soul-fuelled, guitar driven beat, 'Jimmy Recard' is an instant classic. by Mark Kirby,

Whether you call it praise music or New Jack gospel, this genre is most often a classic case of "preaching to the choir," with song lyrics lifted artlessly from the King James bible and histrionic music calculated to "reach out and touch somebody's hand." Dear god. Luckily, Charles Laster II and Silvia Pratesi don't make this mistake on their new record Journey of Life. Their songs reference salvation, heaven, and living the Christian life but, like secular soul music, have an uplifting universality. Those of us who aren't Christian - agnostics, Muslims, those whose spirituality can't be pigeonholed - can still understand the positive spirituality that is the wellspring of Laster and Pratesi's music, and still get our groove on. Felicia Alima - Know Me JM

I was excited to listen to another Aussie R&B singer doing well... until I heard her album.Felicia Alima's album Know Me, features mostly boring music coupled with a vocal style that sounds like a direct rip off of Ciara. It is very hard to take this album seriously. In fact, her opening song Know Me starts exactly the same way lyrically as Ciara’s massive single “, 2, Step. I wouldn’t say the album is completely awful. I mean, I did find one track that I dug. The fourth track on the album I’m Down is an acoustic guitar inspired bouncy club-friendly joint featuring rapper Phoenix. Unfortunately, two tracks later she rips off Prince’s classic When Doves Cry for the flow of the song. For the rest of this review check out: http://www.planeturban.com.au/album_reviews/album_felicia_alima_know_me

What do DJs Rob Swift, Precision, and Total Eclipse have in common? The letter X... as in X-ecutioners! Now, a decade since the conception of the worlds most accomplished DJ crew, these three champions of an art called "Turntablism" are beginning a new chapter in their careers. Their emphasis is to start from scratch (pun intended) and break down all imitations. "We're training our minds to forget and abandon everything we've learned about DJing to this point" according to Rob Swift. Total Eclipse adds "When we get together to create routines, we start from nothing and see where the vibe in the room takes us." Precision caps it off by saying "The long hours we dedicate to practice usually leads to some real crazy routines." Thus, the inspiration to call the themselves ILL INSANITY. Rob Swift
