In todays society we know that the moral fiber of our communities is in peril. Why then, do we not protect our children? We have a responsibility to safeguard our most vulnerable; instead, we prematurely catapult them into a world they are not mature enough to handle and destroy their innocence. Frequently, I am asked by parents and friends of aspiring stars to offer my opinion about getting their child into show business. Recently my publicist, Marsha Friedman, President of Event Management sent me the following question: After the performance I spoke with her mom (who was in tears the whole time) about their incredible daughter and her future. Their daughter's dream is to be on stage singing professionallyI said I would forward some information to you - to get your thoughts. After much contemplation, I wrote to the parents (excerpt):

If you've ever felt like your career was heading for a train wreck and didn't know where to turn, look no further than your own mirror. While you will find there are many people in the industry who will help you once you've succeeded, it's a far cry sometimes for anyone to help you when you are climbing up a ladder that sways in the wind and each rung seems like it's going down instead of up. The biggest inspiration you can have to avoid a career collision is to get up, look yourself in eye in your mirror and remember the classic children's book, "I Think I can, I think I can, I know I can, I know I can." From "The Little Train That Could." Say to yourself when you are looking in that mirror that You Can do it! You will do! And then get out of your comfort zone and DO it! Then start looking on the Internet for local musicians meetings to begin your networking today. Build your list of potential supporters one hand shake at a time.

As a musician, bands have it easier than a solo artist in terms of cost to make a CD. Other than that, there are little or no differences. For bands/artists who wish to start the process of making, distributing, and getting radio airplay by themselves, believe it or not, you are starting your own record label. Even if your goal is to land a major recording contract, you will still need to gather more attention for your music by cutting, distributing and promoting your own music. Youll have a much better chance at getting a great record deal with a major label if you are successful on your own first.

Let me preface this by saying that I have the utmost respect and admiration for songwriters who can write song after song. Those very talented individuals who, while they are sitting on the plane, in the bathroom, or at a dining table, grab a napkin, the roll of toilet paper, the safety guide on the airplane, or whatever may be handy and start frantically writing. While I have had this inspiration once in a while, its not a fluent talent. So my hats are off to you! The statistics were very interesting and I hope not conclusive of what is going on in the music industry right now, although I suspect they are indicative of it.

After all, having a piece of a 51 billion dollar industry is an exciting prospect, filled with anticipation for the future right? Not this time. This industry takes away any hope for the future. Any promise of potential greatness is dashed to the ground, becoming ashes and dust when people continue to invest in this business. Warnings have been issued over the years advising people to avoid investing in this global industry. Still people chose to purchase the stock some one share at a time, others in large quantities.

Surely it is too soon to begin worrying about the Christmas holidays. Or is it? Whatever one could say about Hills Rolling, the moniker of one-man band Trey McGriff, you can't accuse him of having shallow roots. On his myspace page he lists as influences about one hundred or so bands and musicians. There are old schoolers (Otis Redding, The Beatles, Pink Floyd), new schoolers ( The Killers, My Morning Jacket), tweeners (Nirvana, Dinosaur, Jr.) electro types (The Cure, Depeche Mode) and eclecticians like him (Beastie Boys, Beck). No doubt this is in part a smart-ass commentary on the "what are your influences" question. Minneapolis based music studio C-Sharp Productions is featured in an article in the April issue of More Magazine. The magazine is a national women's magazine and is on newsstands around the country now.

"The magazine did a story on women who followed their dreams. One of the dreams they featured was recording a CD," Chad Sharp president of C-Sharp Productions explains. "They contacted me to find out what it costs to record a CD."

Sharp has been producing and recording CD's with independent artists and bands since he started C-Sharp Productions in 1996. Sharp moved the company to Minneapolis from Mitchell, SD in 2007. He has worked on projects in many styles like pop, country, rock, dance and R&B. Sharp said besides recording with artists he also helps them with traditional and online music promotion.

As the Great Lakes Songwriting Contest celebrates its fifth year of operations, the entry fee has been lowered and the Grand Prize increased.
