Hard to box into a single audio 'genre', Pitch Black is a combination of musical journeys, created by Paddy Free and Michael Hodgson. Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their sound together. Featuring:

THE MENSTRUATION SISTERS -

Menstruation Sisters are more of a natural phenomenon than a musical group. Owing more to the sound of ice melting and eggs hatching than strummed guitars and

pounded drums, the Sisters keep one ear on the ground and the other towards the atmosphere. Rather than working within the lines of modern rhythm and structure, they revert towards a primal direction, cutting off the fat and oozing forth only the most natural and unfettered sounds. Naturally, such a technique can be unsettling, as it's not something most humans are interested to hear, or have heard since upright-walking became a viable mode of transportation. This is music for those who kill their own food.

WHAT IS MUSIC? FESTIVAL 2008 .
Event
Saturday 12th April 2008

CarriageWorks, 245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh

After a hiatus in 2007 the notorious 'What is Music?' festival returns in 2008 with what promises to be an experimental music spectacular at the Carriageworks in Sydney this April the 12th. The festival has developed a reputation over the last ten years for presenting the most cutting edge and often outrageous experiments in music making and sound culture from across the globe and around the country. This year, the festival is presenting all homegrown talent with a focus on large scale new instrument design and modification as well as the usual presentation of sonic extremes.

Featuring in the Carriageworks foyer will be Miles Van Dorsen's 'Feuerwasser', a towering plume of flame, steam and sound that emanates from a body of water. Van Dorsen pushes our understanding of day-to-day physics challenging us to reconsider what is possible. From Palermo Valerio Tricoli is one of the leading musicians in the new Italian music scene. His compositions bridge musique concrete and conceptual forms of sound.

Being mined from a type of serpentine rock, it was natural, abundant and easy to produce, yet its unique properties made it almost limitlessly useful. It was resistant to chemicals and intense heat. It was an excellent electrical and thermal insulator. Out of its fibers, you could weave a cloth that wouldn't burn. You could even mix it with other materials to make them stronger and more fireproof.ADVERTISEMENTOver the course of the 20th century, American industry — with the government's blessing — found thousands of uses for this miraculous mineral.Woven into a cloth, it was used to insulate electrical wires. Mixed with a binder, it made a fireproof insulation for pipes and ducts. Mixed with cement, it made a host of practically indestructible

Aniki got the shits pretty early on. The decks weren\\\\\\\'t stable and there was a fair amount of skipping, so he was crashing records togther but it didn\\\\\\\'t matter, as it was in keeping with the theme of the night, loud and raw. He finshed rather early I thought by dropping a Motley Cru track (God I think it was \\\\\\\'Kick Start my Heart\\\\\\\') and cranked it to 11 while he packed up ... Some people in the lounge closed the door in disgust and things were underway, truly a fitting way for the night to start ...

Emiliano Solazzi Griminger (Moti Griminger) was born in December of 1974 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the age of 11 his family and him immigrated to Beer Sheva, Israel, where he lived most of his life. At the age of 15 he started to take guitar lessons and by the age of 18 he was already leading a very succesful Israeli death metal band called CEREBRAL COMA, which had a mayor success in the international and national underground scene. In 1992, Emiliano hooked up with Ziv Matushka, another pioneer in the Israeli electronic music scene and, together, they started to experiment with more Industrial music and eventually writing Goa and Psy trance. Adversary: Bone Music CD [TA006] - OUT NOW

Hailing from the Canadian electronic music underground after a decade of Techno and Industrial DJ and promotional work, Jairus Khan, aka Adversary, now presents his debut album three years in the making. While providing North American tour support for such acts as Terrorfakt, Antigen Shift, Cyanotic, Adam X, Iszoloscope and others, his many remixes of such Industrial Noise icons as Converter and Iszoloscope have enjoyed heavy club and airplay around the world.

Now, Adversary is ready to conquer minds and destroy dancefloors with his debut album 'Bone Music' out May 13th on Tympanik Audio. Hard Industrial rhythms meet enormous organic soundscapes to create what Re:Gen Magazine calls "...a balance between the brutal and the beautiful."

Jazz legend Lyttelton dies at 86

Veteran jazz musician and radio host Humphrey Lyttelton has died aged 86. The chairman of BBC Radio 4's comedy panel show I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue recently had surgery in an attempt to repair an aortic aneurysm. The latest series of the quiz programme was cancelled after Lyttelton was admitted to Barnet Hospital in north London on 16 April. BBC Director General Mark Thompson described "Humph" as "a unique, irreplaceable talent".

quote:

Hello, & welcome to I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

In the 19th century, the docks became central to Bristol's industrialisation, and two great monuments to this period remain today - the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and the SS Great Britain. With its mighty stone block towers and steel rope construction, it's little wonder the ship sank on her maiden voyage, after she was hit by a huge paddle-wheel that fell off the bridge. In those days, clocks in Bristol and the West Country were between 10 and 20 minutes behind London, but with the coming of

"Post-war Britain rebuilt itself on a wave of scientific and industrial breakthroughs that culminated in the cultural revolution of the 1960's. It was a period of sweeping change and experimentation where art and culture participated in and reflected the wider social changes. In this atmosphere was born the Electronic Music Studios (EMS), a radical group of avant-garde electronic musicians who utilized technology and experimentation to compose a futuristic electronic sound-scape for the New Britain.

"Comprising of pioneering electronic musicians Peter Zinovieff and Tristram Cary (famed for his work on the Dr Who series) and genius engineer David Cockerell, EMS's studio was one of the most a

Los Angeles: Where To Catch A Game, or, A Downtown With No S Gridskipper

When we wrote about downtown's Trifecta we were like "sure they're douchebags but at least they're douchebags running a sports bar in downtown LA." And then when we wrote about the Grand Sports Bar we were like "they kind of suck but at least they're running a sports bars in downtown LA." And then both of them went out of business. And then the Flower Sports Bar went out of business. And now downtown is more or less bereft of watering holes servicing both man's need for alcoholic nourishment and his need to drunkenly declare that he's about to fight that out-of-town sports fan over there. Luckily downtown still has a few bars and restaurants where you can catch the occasional game. If you show up at just the right time. If they happen to be open that day. If they haven't closed early. If you're lucky. Fuck. (photo)Casey's Bar & Grill

AFENEON grew from the Brussels arts underground + have quickly found a punk confidence + a fresh, connected sound. They stylishly mix indie-pop, chanson franaise, dub + electronics and are influenced by acts as diverse as New Order, Daniel Darc + Mad Professor. The result; alternative urban disco sweated from French pop classicism. In early 2007 their demo came to the attention of producer Cristian Vogel who, impressed by their extraordinary potential, immediately invited the group to record at his ever-evolving Station 55 electronic music studio. Despite an alcohol-induced broken leg, CAFENEON got behind the wheel for a heady road trip from Brussels to Barcelona where Vogel became the group's own mad professor. Songs veer from the angular, industrial disco of "Orange" to the sunny, continental pop of "Snoopy", all performed with the energy of a new band, who are just finding their sound.
