The Broadway Tony Award-winner belts out the big roadway showstoppers and cool jazz standards Lillias White A Tribute to the music of Cy Coleman

"Lillias White is a singer who makes the most challenging vocal feats look almost easy." - New York Times

The term "living legend" is oft-overused, but occasionally its use is well and truly justified. Such is the case with Lillias White. Sydney Opera House is proud to host her first appearance on a Sydney stage since her sold-out 2005 tour, with three concerts only in The Playhouse.

"She can hold a note longer than Carmen McRae and sounds like a cross-pollination of Sara Vaughan and Dinah Washington" - Rex Reed

Lillias will be paying tribute to the great Cy Coleman, writer of hit musicals Sweet Charity, Barnum, Little Me and The Life, plus a pile of amazing jazz standards including Witchcraft.

After winning an Emmie, a Tony and an Obie on stage and TV (and our hearts on Sesame Street!) her powerful renditions of classic songs prove why she has

Essjee's musical journey thus far has been one of diverse experience, performing at Woodford folk festival, The Dandenong Ranges Folk Festival, The National Folk Festival, The Boolarra Folk Festival, a lot of small town country pubs and around lot of campfires, throughout Australia since his teenage years, he has shared the stage with a broad range of recognised and respected performers, including; Jeff Achison, Carl Panuzzo, Mal Webb, Something for Kate, The Living End and many more.

By playing his guitar in unconventional, percussive and dynamic ways, Essjee is able to make a song both a musical adventure, and an expressive catharsis that is beyond genre and beyond description. He has a very natural approach to performing live, and a warm charm that seems to open a space for the audience to feel as though they are very much a part of the musical journey.

Jaime went on to record some of Sally’s songs and March 2006 Sally was promoting Jaime singing her songs and HMV Jersey was selling Jaime’s CD. Let me preface this by saying that I have the utmost respect and admiration for songwriters who can write song after song. Those very talented individuals who, while they are sitting on the plane, in the bathroom, or at a dining table, grab a napkin, the roll of toilet paper, the safety guide on the airplane, or whatever may be handy and start frantically writing. While I have had this inspiration once in a while, its not a fluent talent. So my hats are off to you! The statistics were very interesting and I hope not conclusive of what is going on in the music industry right now, although I suspect they are indicative of it.

Shifting ones and zeros while I'm listening to the electronic pulse of Style of Eye and live modern acid jazz, hiding in the corner next to the bookcase, my midnight muse.

After 400 plus hours of design and edits and six versions later, my publishing project has finally turned a corner, the same intersection that keeps me typing hundreds of pages and analyzing html code instead of creating hundreds of garments in my studio and workshop.

The technical challenge is moving into a downhill position and the editorial and a handful of electronic self expression is all that lies between myself and publishing my electronic art, fashion and culture magazine.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nashville, TN--October 3, 2005--Who knew that this country singer was really a closet chanteuse? Dyann Woody makes a seamless transition from 'Yee Haw' to 'Ooh La La'. She not only has the voice of an angelic siren, but what will amaze you even more is just how easy and pleasing her music is to listen to. She reaches across many genres and meshes elements of '70's singer/songwriter style, jazz, blues and pop with the art of a well-crafted lyric.

Although this is Dyann's first solo album, she has shared musical success with her husband as part of the Country Music Group, The Woodys. Their debut album on Rounder Records went #1 on the Americana charts; they were voted the Top County Vocal Duo at the International Music News Awards and have received worldwide critical acclaim for all three of their albums. However, there was still a part of Dyann that was musically unfulfilled. She wanted to write songs that expressed all of the emotions and experiences that she and other women h

ZEN LOUNGE album (Downtempo/Chill-Out)

Scour the Internet, and you'll discover that "zen" is described as a direct, experiential realization of enlightenment through meditation. With this canny definition in mind, hats off to superlative Sydney-based label, Hypnotic Room, for achieving this state in just over an hour's listening bliss.

It begins with the ethereal, vaguely aquatic wash of Zen Paradox's 'Tuna Head', which segues into the gentlest of breaks and gradually soars over a terrain reminiscent of Vangelis.

Franck de Villeneuve's 'Mindtrip to the South' continues the water refrain and tangentially goes for more of a dub/trip-hop/modern jazz angle, then the ever-cool Super Cozi tweaks some dreamy, bouncy acid and underlying vocals to mesmerizing effect.

Lili Hirakawa takes the baton (and the omnipresent water theme) on 'Waterward', a beautiful number that builds moment by moment, belying the rush of contemporary life, until it reaches a subtle crescendo that'

Ray Barretto Indestructible (Fania Masterworks Series, 2009)Ray Barretto's Indestructible originally came out in 1973 on Fania Records. This explosive salsa classic, produced by Ray Barretto, is a must have for any salsa fan. The album was a bold move in Barretto's career. Five of his band's musicians had left to form Tipica '73. This was a serious setback and a challenge for Barretto, as a bandleader. "Mind you, the musicians that left were all longstanding members of the band and they were leaving the band at a time when the band was on top of its game," said longtime friend and liner notes writer George Rivera. "After a period of sulking and agonizing over what he believed was the demise of not only his band, but his musical career, he decided to make one last stand just to make a statement." Replacing the musicians was no easy task, but Barretto was determined and he ended up building another formidable band, with musicians that were just as good as those that had left. Najma Akhtar & Gary Lucas

Rishte (World Village, 2009)

It’s not every day I get to listen to an American blues-Indian Classical music fusion recording. I have heard my share of jazz Indian fusion recordings, but “Rishte” by classical Indian vocalist Najma Akhtar and American guitarist Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley) happens to be a first for my ears. And it has taken a few listens before the music actually sunk in.

First I would like to say that I was impressed with Najma Akhtar’s short biographical notes found in the CD booklet. “In October of 2005, while visiting relatives in India and Pakistan, Najma was caught in the South Asian earthquake. Thankfully, she and her family were safe, but she was surrounded by devastation. Instead of returning home to London, Najma became a caring humanitarian, a role similar to one she took years before in Bosnia…” Besides her humanitarian efforts, Akhtar also possesses an incredible vocal talent t

A short introduction 16 Billion Drum Kicks is the new major Sino outing introducing Brazil's top electronic music producer, Renato Cohen. It delivers here a cleverly produced fusion of tribal-esque grooves, Samba Jazz and Funk amalgamated onto its firm foundation of its dancefloor Techno roots. With the help of legendary guest artists such as 70's Brazilian Samba Rock Marku Ribas, Sao Paolo's Samba virtuoso Bocato and Techno hero Technasia, amongst others, Renato conveys a combination of sonic subtleties and frenetic nuances that takes the listener through a myriad of emotions. A first fresh album sure to build on you, it is both a gem to listen in a relaxed state of mind as well when engaged in lightning pace. It's in 2007, after more than 10 years of production and performances, that Renato felt he finally reached the maturity and level of eclecticism required to work on a bigger scale project. He spent the next two years working on the production of his first album, 16 Billion Drum Kicks. With the mainstre

It's a really clever go lucky move that the never resting Glckskind founders Michael Klang and Jrgen Kirsch got Samuel Knob on board. The Valencia-based producer really knows how twist those knobs... to come up with the craziest noises. His skills, honed during his residency times at Barraca Music and Narita Club, are perfectly put into use with this crafty release that should have people dancing on the roof tops--naked. Samuel, a drummer who jumpstarted his musical career at the age of sixteen in a pop-rock band, is exploring the outer realms of percussive beats, incorporated in a tight yet not at all minimal sounding house construct. Inspired by his father who is also a drummer and programmer, he does not hesitate to foray into unknown dimensions, making this eleventh Glckskind release a very special piece of black gold: Samuels tracks resonate the unrest and disquietude of someone who is longing to break through. The A side is simply to die for: With gripping African chants which wave in and out of t

Brut! is delighted to present the new EP of Ekkohaus, a release we've been working for quite a while. During this time, the man has been spoiling other labels such as Morris Audio, Cargo Editions, Liebe*Detail and Circus Company with some great House releases! On this ocassion he has taken it further. He has chosen the risky path, merging the sounds of Be-bop and Jazz with Techno and House and plunging deeper than he ever did before. Rest assured, floor damage is part of the equation. :-P -- Hard work and patience has paid off, and we'd like to think this is Ekkohaus' most ambitious release to date! Prove us wrong if you can... ;-) http://www.humpty.de?id=47&aid=22301&lang=en

Slow Motion is the latest release from Robert Jan Meyer on the gorgeous Munich label Compost Records. Robert Jan Meyer aka Minus 8 the Swiss producer has been making music since the late 80's. The culmination of years of music exploration came in the early 90's when he launched his Minus 8 project.* Minus 8 Slow Motion is a fantastic collection of chilled pieces ranging from up-tempo house to relaxed nu-jazz sweetly accented at times with the beautiful voice of Virag (whose voice, incidentally I've fallen in love with). It's come at the perfect time too, with experts warning this summer is going to be the hottest in the UK for several years I can't think of a better album / mix to listen too while relaxing in the park. With such gems as Slow Motion, Winter Tales, We're Waiting and Juy offering enough distraction to pull your thoughts away from Swine Flu and the economic crisis and whatnot for just long enough to make you feel weightless and free. http://www.humpty.de?id=47&aid=22277&lang=en
