| | . | Event | 18th September 200820th September 2008Sling Restaurant & Lounge, 153 Boundary Street, West End, BrisbaneWriting doesn't just exist in the machine of big publishing. Writing is an organic thing; alive in our cities and communities and on our streets. Writing happens in street presses and in the burgeoning forays of small collectives and magazines. It happens in graffiti. In digital art. It happens on screens, in blogs and forums and personalised sites. It happens live - in theatre, at stand-up comedy clubs and on our nightclub stages where lyricism cuts a fleshy swathe. BURN Writers Collective understands that writing is not just the next great or not-so-great novel, the latest trend, or the push of the moment. Writing is bought and sold but it is also something we already own; the language of communication and expression exists on all kinds of streets and stages and screens. And we're here to really celebrate it. Writing - The Fringe Festival will bring together some of south east Queensland's most gifted and innovative wordsmiths working across a variety of platforms and media. | | | Blog Entry | Laos History Stone tools discovered in Huaphanh and Luang Prabang provinces attest the presence of prehistoric man in its stage of hunters and gatherers over the Lao territory since at least 40,000 years ago. Agriculturist society seemed to appear during the 4th millenia BC as evidences have been found by archeologists-jar burials and other kinds of sepulchres have revealed a complex society in which Bronze objects appeared around 1500 BC and iron tools were known since 700 BC. The proto historic period is characterized by contacts with Chinese and Indian civilisations. As a result between the fourth and eighth century. Between the fourth and eighth century communities along the Mekong River began to form into towships, so called muang. This development culminated in the formation of the Lan Xang (Million Elephants) Kingdom. | | msgmessenger | News Item | Shamash, the Dispeller of Darkness! Shamash, the most common Akkadian name for sun god, was the embodiment of justice. The giver of light, Shamash was known to disperse darkness by bringing wrong & injustice to light. The early Babylonians and Assyrians considered Shamash to be an inspiration to many and put together the pre-existing laws and legal procedures into a code that was in adoration of Shamash, the dispeller of darkness. Sun God (Shamash, giver of light) was also regarded as the one who relieved the sufferers from the clutches of evil spirits and demons. All worshipped him as the god who relieved them of their suffering. The Babylonian literature is testament to this aspect of Shamash, which can be seen in the hymns that have been written in praise of the sun god. He was the deity personified and reined over all other deities because of his supreme powers and healing qualities. The strong Shamash cults at Sippar and Larsa ensured of that. The minor sun gods thus are known to serve Shamash, the labrador Read More... |

| | Torontoist | Syndicated | Supporters wait for Barack Obama to speak at a rally in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 2, 2008. Photo by Jauretsi. Although that pesky thing known as "the law" kept non-citizens from voting in Tuesday's U.S. presidential election, it turns out that there was nothing to stop enthusiastic foreigners from showing up at a local campaign office and asking to volunteer. More than a few Torontonians did just that, including Alex Weinberger (a staffer in the Toronto office of New Democrat Leader Jack Layton) and me (a former speechwriter to a Liberal Member of Parliament) who took the Greyhound to Cleveland, Ohio, to spend the final days of the campaign working to turn that swingiest of swing states Obama blue. In Glenville, the low-income, predominantly African-American east-side neighbourhood in which we were based, the challenge was never convincing residents to vote for Barack Obama: out of ballots cast at one local school, only three went to John McCain, compared to five hundred for labrador Read More... |
