Event
Saturday 25th July 2009

King st, Sydney

All day markets and music in the centre of Newtown Newtown D.I.Y markets has been a regular fixture on the last Saturday of the month in Newtown for the last 6 years and has helped launch many local artists as well as clothing labels and craft products. The monthly event was launched on the wave of street party's and social justice oriented community events around 2003. Mass produced items are discouraged but second hand trash and treasure often finds a new home at these vibey markets.

Its is on again this Saturday 25th and promises to be a big one,the weather's looking good so come on down to the centre of Newtown, browse at the many stalls and listen to the varied selection of tunes from the Mulgi sound system.D.J Chrislego,MashyP and Vapor will be spinning.

PHILO AGORA - Philosophy in the Caf .
Event
Tuesday, 6th October 2009

Fair Trade Coffee Company, 33 Glebe Point Road, Glebe

Joffre Balce: Markets? What Markets? When Philosophy Truly Meets Agora The talk will provide a philosophical treatment of economics by returning to its very foundations. Who produces what; for whom? Why should commodities be traded; valued as they are; Where is that "free market" that everyone is talking about, how does it work & when is it going to make poverty history as its advocates claim it would? If we don't like the way the world economy is run, how can philosophers begin to participate in building a new market economy?

Joffre is an economist who has worked in both developed & developing economies. His obtained a Bachelor of Arts at the Ateneo de Manila University. He has lectured on the history of economic thought at the University of Asia & the Pacific, where he earned a Master of Science in Industrial Economics. He is currently working on his PhD in Law at the University of New South Wales.

At first glance, Drake's success as an artist appears similar to his hip-hop peers. The actor turned Grammy-nominated rapper performed at the 2010 Grammy Awards and starred in a recent Sprite commercial during the NBA All-Star game.

Here is what's new: Drake has yet to release a full-length retail album. So Far Gone was the 6th best selling rap release of 2009, despite being just a seven song mixtape. His radio airplay was demanded organically, lacking the traditional push from a major label. Although a supposed album is in the pipeline, current social patterns tell us he's built a sustainable career from a few singles and a wildly popular mixtape, a distribution formula unique to the digital era.

If you wanted a perfect example of an early 21st century, bedroom symphony, global village, post-everything, hybrid pop to send up on the next Voyager space explorer, then you’d need look no farther than Ent’s Welcome Stranger. Constructed entirely by Nagasaki native Atsuhie Horie, aside from live drums delivered by Takanori Ohita, in the downtime between his outings as frontman for his BritPop influenced Straightener, the album does everything you would expect from an up to date, technologically savvy multi-instrumentalist. The glitched up intro for ‘No Tone’ which begins the album, sets the scene clearly. Snatches of guitar burst, static fizz, some IDM-esque rhythmic sounds and then a Strawberry Fields mellotron as early lead instrument. The track then builds, layering piano, synths and overdriven acoustic drums, building to the grand finle that undoubtedly resides in the art rock shadow of Radiohead. It’s epic and intimate by turns and quite engaging. The album progresses t

Recently, I spoke with Yan, who is the manager the hip-hop group Jedi Mind Tricks and now partner in Enemy Soil, a full-service music company, with JMT front man Vinnie Paz.  In this interview, Yan talks about the emergence of a middle class of artists, what its like being in a niche based music business, and how JMT is taking control of their music. Over the years, with the rise of file-sharing and social networks, has JMTs level of involvement with their fans changed at all?  In what ways has their involvement in JMTs career " their vested interest in their art " evolved as well? Absolutely.  Im sure youve heard a lot of artists talk about the blessing and curse that is file sharing.  For JMT, it has been more of a blessing.  Yeah, theyve lost sales to illegal file sharing just like everyone else, but the efficiency of those file sharing networks has allowed their music to spread across the world in a way that the phys

How to Stream Your Music Into Second Life

Six Software Source Clients Compared

By Joe Bear

Were you aware that your music can be streamed into Second Life using the same technology as internet radio? Bringing your music to this new audience requires a Shoutcast source client, which sends your music to a streaming server, which subsequently rebroadcasts your music to all the listeners in Second Life.

This article lists the leading choices in Shoutcast/Icecast source clients. This source client is the piece of software that runs on your computer, connecting the music you play with the streaming server.

What it does

The Shoutcast/Icecast streaming source client takes audio input from a program or hardware device, encodes it into a media stream, and sends the media stream on to a streaming server. Each step of this process requires configuration, and each program differs in the specifics of where you may find these settings. However, the settings themselves are fairly universal.

MOG Gets $9.5M, Expands Into Spotify Territory hypebot

(Updated) Music discovery and subscription service MOG.com has announced another $9.5 million in funding and a pending expansion into Europe. The round was led by Menlo Ventures which was joined by new investor Balderton Capital. Dharmash Mistry, partner at Balderton Capital, has been appointed to MOGs board. The company had raised $12.5 million in previous rounds. MOG also announced that it will launch in the UK by the end of the second quarter. The UK is one of rival Spotify's most successful markets; and with Spotify thus far kept out of the U.S., it's the first time the two services will go head to head. MOG will try to counter Spotify's premium model with paid access to a 7 million track catalog of music that includes all four majors. One label exec told Hypebot that he is supportive of MOG not just for it's paid model, but also because it offers far more options for music discovery than its competitors. With the wording of his title, he evokes moral panic and folk devils.  In case youre not familiar, a moral panic is a false appeal.  It is when a group of persons has been in recent times been defined as a "threat to societal values and interests."1  Those blamed for posing such imminent threats on society are called folk devils. This is for sale. Amazon 'owns' information...Soundscan 'owns' information concerning CD and digital sales.""So, every couple of years when the band releases a new CD we hustle, work, and pay to promote it ...And like clockwork Cheap Trick's former record company(s) release repackaged budget Special Products to cannibalize the new release," continued Frey. "So it was decided The Latest would not be registered with Soundscan...But keeping information from Soundscan so that it can't be sold to competitors is impossible." "Similar to the 24/7 media that leaves no room for mystique, development, and nowhere to earn fans. Too much information in the wrong hands can kill", concluded Frey.
