Life on the independent Hip Hop scene appears to be much like working a 9-to-5 office job, except presumably more stimulating. It lacks the glory and recognition of a more glamorous trade, while promotions/raises are fleeting. The Prairie Oysters have recorded three video clips which will be air over coming weeks on Country Crossroads which is broadcast right across the country on the Aurora Channel (183). Country Crossroads is a show dedicated to supporting country music and independent artists. The team, headed up by Rob Foenander are are dedicated in their support for Australian country music acts and we're absolutely delighted to be a part of the line up. We will certainly be regular viewers of the show and we highly recommend it being part of your viewing habits if you have Foxtel.

In researching this review I found out that the signing of I Set My Friends on Fire was due to a very different cover of "Crank Dat", a song by an artist known as Soulja Boy. It was getting upward of 50,000 plays a day on Myspace. I'm not sure if it was just this song that got the attention of Epitaph but regardless, that's where the duo of Nabil Moo and Matt Mihana of Miami, Fl ended up.

You Can't Spell Slaughter without Laughter is a bit of a crazy album, one that will most likely go over most people's heads. There are tracks on here where you don't know if they are taking seriously or not. There is killer screamo on here as well as some weirdo-electro-angry-rap like on "HXC 2-Step". Instead of having guitar break downs the band opts for computer generated samples. It's just strange. They have a strange concoction again on "WTFWJD", the screamo, the electro, the emo. It's not bad. I would say the worst track on the album is the god awful "Crank Dat" cover. It seems to mock the rest of what they do.

So are I

Economy Class is my first exposure to the Finnish "power-string" band Frigg. It is an amalgam of Celtic and bluegrass music. It sounds like a bit more of a world flavored Allison Krauss. While the music is very upbeat, it does have a mature sound to it. This may have to do with everyone in the Finnish village where Frigg is from tends to play a stringed instrument. Songs like "Kind Of Polka" are energetic and fully instrumental. Most of the songs are like this but a few of them like "Viinalaulu" have vocals.

There isn't a lot of diversity on Economy Class but I can see many fans of both world music as well as Bluegrass and Celtic music get into the music of Frigg. It has energy and excitement. This album may be one of those that you would only listen to on occasion, you probably wouldn't come back for many repeat listens, despite the Jarvela family's obvious talent. I'm not sure what it would take to get Frigg mass acceptance but Economy Class is a start anyway.
