Hard to box into a single audio 'genre', Pitch Black is a combination of musical journeys, created by Paddy Free and Michael Hodgson. Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their sound together. One critic has described them as like "Richie Hawtin meets King Tubby, or Rhythm and Sound in Technicolor". Their debut album, Futureproof, was released in September 1999 and rose to the top of the New Zealand electronic charts, despite no marketing or advertising. | | | Blog Entry | Comment: Exuberant energy at the North PoleBy : Rehman Rashid Email to friend Print article Putera Umno’s North Pole jumpers a long way from Jalan Sultan Ismail. WHAT was the point of Putera Umno’s distinctly under-celebrated North Pole jump? I guess you had to be there. They should all be safely home today, whereupon the rest of us might get a sense of what it’s like to jump out of a Russian military helicopter a couple of kilometres over the North Pole, into the whipping down draught of rotors whirling through thin air at minus 18 degrees Celsius, to plunge down through the Arctic ether and land at the Pole with enough breath left for a lusty rendition of Negara Ku.Not the sort of thing normal people normally do. But that was the point of the exercise: These were not normal people. They were adventurers. Risk-takers. | | | Blog Entry | Hi there! We would like to introduce an idea we have developed for European bands & artists. Every band is welcome to sign up to Church Of Noise & participate in the venue rating. Once having created your account you will be able not only to submit & introduce venues you have played shows at but to rate its work with the help of criteria such as sound, organization, care & catering. You do not necessarily have to submit venues but you are welcome to rate some which have already been submitted & rated by other bands & artists. Once you submit and/ or rate a venue you can leave a comment you should use to underline & express whatever comes into your mind concerning the venue & show. At the moment we are looking for international bands from all over Europe to start adding new countries & venues to our databank. More than 200 German bands have contributed more than 200 venues already which have been rated around 400 times. If you know bands or people who could help out - please spread Read More... |

| | MusicDish | News Item | . by Mark Kirby, Whether you call it praise music or New Jack gospel, this genre is most often a classic case of "preaching to the choir," with song lyrics lifted artlessly from the King James bible and histrionic music calculated to "reach out and touch somebody's hand." Dear god. Luckily, Charles Laster II and Silvia Pratesi don't make this mistake on their new record Journey of Life. Their songs reference salvation, heaven, and living the Christian life but, like secular soul music, have an uplifting universality. Those of us who aren't Christian - agnostics, Muslims, those whose spirituality can't be pigeonholed - can still understand the positive spirituality that is the wellspring of Laster and Pratesi's music, and still get our groove on. Laster, who composed the excellent lyrics, and Pratesi, who created most of! the music with a seamless combination of live musicians and samples, remind us how gospel and rhythm and blues gave birth to soul music in the early sixties and how a new kind of s soul gospel christian pop music releases and reviews Read More... |
| | davet1408 | News Item | Size Matters! From a DJ's viewpoint, the function room size is one of the most important factors for the success of your party. A room that is licensed for 150 evening guests is (reassuringly!) a much better atmosphere with 150 guests in it. If the number of guests were, say, 60 in the same room then crowds become patchy as they space out, and a lot of the intimacy is lost. If the only available suite for your wedding day is too big for your needs, ask if it can be made to look smaller using room dividers or ornamental screens. Acoustics Delights for all DJs to see upon entering a venue are lots and lots of carpets and curtains! All soft furnishings soak up sound waves and thus reduce that dreadful echo effect found in many village halls. High pitched roofs are also a bit of a pain where sound is concerned - it tends to rise up and swirl around in the rafters, again creating echoes and also losing momentum. Some of the most architecturally-stunning and historic hotels and venues have the worst acoustics dj weddings Read More... |
| | Danny Sillada | News Item | The Liberating Experience of Hip-Hop in My Music! By Danny C. Sillada INTRODUCTION As a Filipino multi-media artist, I must humbly admit, I don't only compose and sing ethnic songs, needless to mention my ethno-techno compositions, but I also write and perform hip-hop music. But why Hip-hop? I. BRIEF HISTORY OF "PINOY HOP-HOP" Honestly, though, I am new to hip-hop culture especially to the so-called "Pinoy Hip-Hop", imported from America and became prominent in the Philippines via some Filipino mainstream artists in the 1980s, but suddenly lost momentum in the early 1990s, and later resurfaced in the late 1990s onwards. Among those forerunners of "new Filipino hip-hop generation" are young university college students who, out of disillusionment from authorities and the society, used hip-hop as a potent tool for protest and "self-expression". One of these progressive groups, some have already graduated with degrees, is called "AMPON" (Absolute Messages Personified Over Noise). | | Music Emissions Alternative Music Reviews | Syndicated | It is early to be sure, but I'll be damned if the opening track, "Your Far Church," isn't one of the best songs I've heard all year. Profound, scary and intimate, it implies worlds of emotion and menace. While the rest of "Saw A Halo" is not as intense and complete, this is an amazing release, on which Mouthus dig deeper and finds new power in their noise/post-rock/ brooding palette. The duo of Brian Sullivan (Eskimo King) and Nate Nelson (Religious Knives) explore the dark corners of hope and community, with a more concrete bottom to their soundscapes than on prior sets. The addition of acoustic guitars to the psych-drone elevate songs like "Armies Between" and "Beaches Sleep Here." All are more frightening (and oddly beautiful) because of that organic presence in the mix. This is not just a wailing, but reaching out for other mourners. They have added new colors to their psychic explorations, and found new ways to help the listener feel less alone in those dark corners. The closer, "Gift of Sighs," is jus isreal Read More... |
| | Music Emissions Alternative Music Reviews | Syndicated | Seriously, it would be compliment to call the new missive from Thee Silver Mt. Zion & Tra-La-La Band) the soundtrack to nice sunny afternoon in the day room at a mental hospital. Really; with environmental sounds that sound alternately like they were taped out a window or in a boiler room, and the creepy but oddly comforting vocals, "13 Blues for Thirteen Moons" could easily be the antidote to despair. Or the trigger. With two violins, two guitars, cello and contrabass (plus drums) there is a lot of ammo to deliver emotional and harrowing noise, as on "1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound" or "Black Waters Blowed." Yet equally creepy are the muted, lo-fi interludes and long preamble, which in their way are more unhinged that the louder freaky-deaky. Guitarist/vocalist Efrim, as on most releases, makes you wonder and worry about him. He is not alone in chilling the spine, though, as he gets vocal harmony help that blend often to sound like a unified burst of deranged testifyin'. But "13 Blues" is another inner-ex isreal Read More... |
