Fresh from captivating audiences at this year's Brisbane Festival, Welcome Stranger returns to Melbourne with a reworking of their acclaimed production of Villanus. From his new hovel at an abandoned high school in North Fitzroy, Vladimir Mijic fumbles his way through a mess of a set constructed from Hessian and packing tape in a misguided attempt to understand the nature of villainy.

An Australian artist of Serbian descent, Mijic plays out the paranoia and hysteria inherent in vilification. Vlad exploits high and low-tech gadgetry on a stage that is seemingly out to get him. Disturbing, dangerous and darkly comic, Villanus is an attempt to examine the division between good and evil through a mind itself divided; to reveal the causes and effects of such concepts. How do you view yourself if you are constantly told you are a villain?

One of Nowra's most accomplished plays - this is a passionate, wild and sensitive Australian classic. This powerful and confronting piece was inspired by a true story from the wilderness of Tasmania and is set during the Second World War. Through the eyes of the backpackers who found them, we see the innocence of a lost group of convicts who have, over three generations, developed their own culture, language, traditions and through inbreeding, physical deformities. The authorities are both excited and confused as to what to do with this clan of 'aliens' from the past.

Nowra presents us with a play within a play, a mix of Greek tragedy and modern misfortune and asks us to question our Australian tradition of indifference and ineptitude towards that which is uncomfortable.

While the crew deals with Prospero's minions Ariel and Caliban, its not until Alonso's son Ferdinand falls in love with Prospero's beautiful daughter Miranda that the stage is truly set for William Shakespeare's final masterpiece "The Tempest".

Backing the vision of director Jeff Soroka, Theatre Unleashed will focus its production of "The Tempest" on capturing the wonder of a mystical romance. Incorporating elements of Japanese kuroko and dance to emphasize the fantastical, and a sound and stage design that will encompass the audience and draw them to the island, Theatre Unleashed promises an intimate evening of Shakespeare that won't soon be forgotten.

This beautiful play from one of the twentieth centurys legendary theatre makers comes to Riverside Theatres from Thursday 4 September for four performances only. The Merrigong Theatres Companys production of VALLEY SONG brings to life a personal tale from Athol Fugard, recognised as South Africas greatest playwright.

In a tiny village in a valley in the South African countryside live 17-year-old Veronica and her aging grandfather, Buks. Her strong desire to leave the valley and follow her dreams is matched only by his determination to protect her and resist the inevitable changes enveloping them. A newcomer to the village further threatens the simple life they have lived for so long.

VALLEY SONG is not only a personal tale, but explores how our hopes, dreams and fears shape us, a metaphor for the future of post-apartheid South Africa. The production stars the talented Philip Hinton and Alexandria Steffensen.
