Children and the Entertainment Industry - With backstage moms and dads prevailing over their children, are we in danger of corru
Blog Entry
In todays society we know that the moral fiber of our communities is in peril. Why then, do we not protect our children? We have a responsibility to safeguard our most vulnerable; instead, we prematurely catapult them into a world they are not mature enough to handle and destroy their innocence. Their daughter's dream is to be on stage singing professionallyI said I would forward some information to you - to get your thoughts. After much contemplation, I wrote to the parents (excerpt):

They have been blowing crowds away since their first spin back in 1997 and have continued to impress with world-class performances ever since. The Pitch Black sound is a distinct combination of musical journeys ranging from organic ambient beginnings, layered sound scapes to cutting-edge acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves. "A world class Latin band" - Rhythms Magazine

Captivating, lively and utterly addictive - 10-piece Latin outfit San Lazaro are set to embark on their long awaited nationwide tour and you better believe you're going to dance!

The band, consisting of members from Chilean, Spanish, Indian, Mauritian, Persian, Irish, Greek and Australian backgrounds, dish up the kind of cross cultural funk that's seen their fanbase swell since their inception four years ago. Indeed, for San Lazaro, music is driven by passion, not genre bias, with the collective embracing everything from hip hop, rock and reggae, all infused with the band's trademark Latin flava.

Led by celebrated young female percussionist and timbale player Nasrine Rahmani (Tumbarumba, The Oxo Cubans), San Lazaro's music comes alive through outstanding Spanish language rapper and conga player Sebastian Orellana and seasoned Chilean vocalist Franshesco Viran who shines up front. Oscar Poncell is the man who commands the driving 'Montunto' played on the C

Exploding from the fingertips and vocal chords of some of Australia's finest musicians are Good Buddha's superb singles 'Movin On' and 'Bouncin'. The 6-piece band have been skimming the cream off the top of every genre that tickles their fancy, whipping up hook-laden vocal excursions to satisfy any type of musical hunger.

Wind the clock back to 1998 and Sydney's Good Buddha were testing their rhymes and rhythms playing huge house parties for fortunate friends. Their sparkling performances and dynamic energy ensured the word would quickly spread. Appearances at festivals including Splendour in the Grass, the Woodford Folk Festival, Good Vibrations and the Big Day Out, supporting the likes of everyone from People Under the Stairs, Ugly Duckling, The Pharcyde, Grandmaster Flash, Black Eyed Peas and Lyrics Born to name a few, ensued.

Now, a decade from conception the barely contained bundle of energy that is the atomic core of the band (Matt, Andy, Al, Nui, Jack

The Liberating Experience of Hip-Hop in My Music!

By Danny C. Sillada

INTRODUCTION

As a Filipino multi-media artist, I must humbly admit, I don't only compose and sing ethnic songs, needless to mention my ethno-techno compositions, but I also write and perform hip-hop music.

But why Hip-hop?

I. BRIEF HISTORY OF "PINOY HOP-HOP"

Honestly, though, I am new to hip-hop culture especially to the so-called "Pinoy Hip-Hop", imported from America and became prominent in the Philippines via some Filipino mainstream artists in the 1980s, but suddenly lost momentum in the early 1990s, and later resurfaced in the late 1990s onwards.

Among those forerunners of "new Filipino hip-hop generation" are young university college students who, out of disillusionment from authorities and the society, used hip-hop as a potent tool for protest and "self-expression".

One of these progressive groups, some have already graduated with degrees, is called "AMPON" (Absolute Messages Personified Over Noise). They come

A Brief History of Nothing MusicDish
News Item
by Phil Campbell,

In October 2007, legendary performer Charlie Nothing passed away at his Soquel California home. The following article was originally published in The Fretboard Journal, Number 6, Summer 2007. Charlie was pleased with the story, saying "I've had interviews and articles before but yours is the best by farS Thank you so much!"

Thank you Charlie Nothing! We miss you.

According to his official biography, Charlie Nothing "was not born, did not go to school, did not die," and his main instrument is the dingulator. Obsessive record collectors may recall his name from the 1967 LP The Psychedelic Saxophone of Charlie Nothing, one of the only non-guitar records released on John Fahey's Takoma label. Contemporary listeners might know Nothing from his powerful performance of dingulation, as he calls his music, in Chicago at the 2005 Two Million Tongues Festival. Featuring a roster of difficult-to-categorize musicians, it was the ideal venue for this difficult-to-categorize performer. Josep

Music Business Conference Dos & Donts MusicDish

by Allen Johnston,

Music Conferences today have become big business for the individuals and companies that put them on. Almost every conference created has an educational component, a seminar, panel discussion or technical workshop. Here lays the problem: Why pay good money to come to a conference with positive seminars and not attend? Every conference I have attended in the United States this year has had more nighttime attendees for parties and performances than daytime seminar attendees.

MusicDish Network SponsorIn Europe it is the complete opposite. Conference attendees come for business during the day in droves. Panels are packed and private meetings are scheduled. Let me give you a few ideas on how to become more productive at your next conference.

Rules To Work Conferences

1. Research Your Conference: Know who is going to be at the event you will be attending. Read the schedule in advance and determine who you want to meet and WHY you want to meet them.

2. Schedule Meetings: Try and r

TRIX SYJUCO: “I FELL IN LOVE WITH A KILLER”“Art is permitted to survive only if it renounces the right to be different, and integrates itself into the omnipotent realm of the profane.”

-Theodore Adorno, Prisms

Aesthetics is a poetic revelation of truth [1] through visual, literary and performing arts. As a poetic revelation, it uses visual imageries to reveal what is hidden through a particular aesthetic medium from the artist’s standpoint. One of these dynamic mediums is performance art or live art performance.

As an offshoot to visual art, performance art subverts the form and structure of conventional art making using a framing device and imagery of reality during the aesthetic presentation. Contrary to performing arts like dance, theater and musical – live art performance is a dynamic, unrehearsed presentation of the imagery of reality through live actions in front of the audience.

Imagery of reality is the symbolic structure of reality within a particular time-fr

The Heron’s Secret: Maxine Syjuco as Performance Artist

"Modern art touches a sore spot, or several sore spots, in the ordinary citizen of which he is totally unaware. The more irritated he becomes at modern art the more he betrays the fact that he himself, and his civilization, are implicated in what the artist shows him." (William Barrett, Irrational Man)

When the heron* walks before sundown on the rice field during summer, it is like a mythic figure from a distance. The dainty steps, the delicate white plumage, the well-defined long neck with tapering bill – creating an elegant step on the carabao** sludge as though it were a goddess coming down from her celestial garden.

Gentle and placid, the heron would woo the carabao to let it ride on its back and pick the insects feasting on the latter’s skin covered with mire. After completing its seem
