Brisbane Writers Festival .
Event
17th September 200821st September 2008

State Library of Queensland

The Brisbane Writers Festival has held the place of Queensland's premier literary event for twelve years.

It brings the world of writing and ideas to Brisbane, and showcases the best of local, national and international writing to Brisbane, and to the world. For five days in September each year the festival takes over the spectacularly re-developed State Library of Queensland (next to the iconic Gallery of Modern Art and Queensland Art Gallery) in the South Bank cultural precinct alongside the Brisbane River.

The Opening Night speech is a defining feature of the festival.

Chris Abani's work has been described as resonating "with a devasting beauty which cuts to the heart of human strength". Read about him here. Chris will be appearing throughout the festival but if you are a writer, then don't miss the opportunity to join him for a masterclass - it will be an extraordinary experience.

Direct from the Edinburgh Festival comes "The Bard Mark Two", Ryan JW Smith will perform his self-written, one-man

WRITING - THE FRINGE FESTIVAL .
Event
18th September 200820th September 2008

Sling Restaurant & Lounge, 153 Boundary Street, West End, Brisbane

Writing doesn't just exist in the machine of big publishing. Writing is an organic thing; alive in our cities and communities and on our streets. Writing happens in street presses and in the burgeoning forays of small collectives and magazines. It happens in graffiti. In digital art. It happens on screens, in blogs and forums and personalised sites. It happens live - in theatre, at stand-up comedy clubs and on our nightclub stages where lyricism cuts a fleshy swathe.

BURN Writers Collective understands that writing is not just the next great or not-so-great novel, the latest trend, or the push of the moment. Writing is bought and sold but it is also something we already own; the language of communication and expression exists on all kinds of streets and stages and screens. And we're here to really celebrate it.

Writing - The Fringe Festival will bring together some of south east Queensland's most gifted and innovative wordsmiths working across a variety of platforms and media. The Sling Restaurant Loung

BUMMING WITH JANE

by Tahli Corin

Patrick and Jane are hitting 30, madly in love, madly in lust and occasionally just plain mad. All of their furniture except the couch has been sold to the pawnbroker, they live on a diet of cheap wine, baked beans and whatever they can find in the dumpsters behind their local supermarket, and they take it in turns to hold down a part time job. Life is great. But nothing lasts.

Inspired by the poetry of Charles Bukowski and the modern Australian city, Bumming With Jane is a funny, loving and beguiling debut play from Tahli Corin.

It's about love, poverty and the fleeting joy of choosing to live a free and ragged-arse life.

Robert Crumb comes to the Festival of writers 2009. He is one of the most open artists of the 20th century and what he started to create in 1960’s still has problems with people not accepting it. (With today tendencies for political correctness even maybe more ppl than in 60’s)

Crumb in 60’s came with a genial idea how to get tabooed themes to public " because everything coming out of official distribution was auto-censored, they founded their own distribution net including shops. Crumb himself made the cult comics Zap, and put the base theme in: do whatever you want.

The other guests of the writer’s festival Praha 2009 are the French poet of Syria origin writing under pseudonym Adonis and an important Danish poet Inger Christensen. They are both being discussed as possible gainers of the Nobel prize.

The literary festival takes place in Prague from 7 " 11 June. Discussion forum are going to focus especially on literature of the old worlds of Arabia and China with the leitmo
